connor mathematical club last night at 7 o'clock the math ematical club held a meeting in the physical laboratory the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved the name of instructor evans was proposed for membership the first paper was presented by far man on an introduction to linear differential equations ordinary and partial having explained that a linear equation is one of the first degree he pro ceeded to give the solution of sev eral elementary forms it was then shown how the more general forms could be solved and it was stated that those with imaginary roots could be solved by means of vector analysis the second paper by white 95 presented a solution of the following problem using principles explained by the previous paper : a case of permanent temperature in a thin rectangular plate of a certain breadth and of infinite length whose faces are impervious to heat the two long edges being kept at zero temperature — one short edge is unity temperature and the temperature of points in the plate decreases as we recede from the base he then stated that these same principles could be applied to the solution of all cases involving force of gravity magnet ism and flow of heat lawn tennis the tennis association has in vited the following colleges to send representatives to a tournament to be held here during the latter part of may : princeton liaverford columbia franklin and marshall dickinson state college cornell swarthmore gettysburg rutgers college of the city of new york muhlenberg university of penn sylvania lafayette new york university and stevens there will be an important meeting of the washington club christmas hall wednesday at 7 p m to elect officers for the en suing year all are urged to be present pkesident baseball state college 15 le high 7 the aggregation of ball-tossers from state college took lehigh's rejuvenated team into camp by a score of 15 to 7 yesterday after noon for seven innings the game was as pretty as one could wish to see but bowie weakened very per ceptibly in the eighth giving state college a long lead and allowing them to win the game with the exception of the bat tery no man on the home team was in the same position which he played in the last game petrikin came m from right to second and played the position well captain thompson moved up to short and john wallace took the latter's place at third ayallace having had but one day's practice showed a lack of steadiness in both batting and fielding senior covered first base very acceptably whitmoyer was moved back to his old position in leftfield gannon started the game for le high by going out at first petri kin the next man up picked out a nice one and calmly lifted it over the rightfield fence thereby scoring our first run senior and bowie both struck out retiring the side for state college stuart singled over second and took second on a passed ball rice struck out and greenland hit a fly to left which was taken in by whitmoyer ath erton now came to the rescue with a two base hit scoring stuart and coming home himself on a poor throw by thompson to catch him at third walker struck out end ing the inning whitmoyer opened the second by going out from short to first goss hit was too hard for the pitcher to handle and he reached first safely and immediately stole second thompson was retired at first but lukens beat his hit to the base goss took third on the hit and scored a moment later on a poor throw to catch him off the base wallace struck out state college failed to score in her half in the third inning gannon the first man up struck out petrikin's third strike was a wild pitch and he reached first soon after taking third on a wild throw to catch him napping senior sacrificed scoring petrikin and bowie went out stuart to atherton stuart got his base on balls but was neatly caught napping at first and run down between bases rice's fly was caught by gannon green land reached first on senior's error atherton was retired however on a foul fly to goss making the score 3 to 2 in lehigh's favor eached scored one run in the fourth whitmoyer singled past third and stole second goss fly was caught by greenland thomp son made a neat sacrifice to first advancing whitmoyer who scored later on a wild pitch lnkens reached first on an error but wal lace was out from second to first gannon started the next inning with a single stole second and scored on a poor throw to catch him at third petrikin got first on balls senior hit past short advancing petrikin a base bowie the next batter hit to nesbitt who threw to third forcing petrikin out senior taking second on the play whitmoyer's sacrifice ly to centre moved senior to third and shortly after he stole home gross ended the inning with a fly to center state now tallied four placing her one ahead stuart got first on an error by wallace goin second on eice's bunt b wie sent greenland to first on 1 alls moving the other two runner up a base each atherton maoe a timely single scoring two mom and himself stealing second wal ker was out from petrikin to senior but brown again singled scoring greenland and atheraton brown was caught stealing second and thomas the next batter was retired on an infield hit lehigh went out in one-two three order in the sixth w'uilo state increased her lead by sen ing one more in the seventh gannon for the third time came first to the bat and singled to right but was soon doubled up on petrikin's foul fly to first thus dimming the prospect of overtaking our opponents senior hit to eice and was thrown out at first for state atherton and walker the first two hitters were neatly retired at first on ground hits to thompson brown again hit to short but reached first on thomp son's excusable error thomas was sent to first on balls but hayes was retired on a grounder to senior lehigh scored one again in the eighth on two hits a stolen base and a sacrifice in state's half bowie weakened and was pounded hard six hits being made in quick succession one being a home run by hayes turner replaced bowie and finished the inning without further scoring the change how ever came too late lehigh was easily retired in the ninth through a misunderstanding of the umpire's decision the visiting team put up a very cool and even game stuart's play ing being particularly noticeable petrikin thompson and
