2 when a team such as lehigh suffers defeat at the hands of the tigers like the well-known postum add there's a reason the reason is not hard to find when it is taken into consideration the members of the team were all tired out by their long journey from old south mountain to the den of the tigers lehigh got off to a very slow start and that was the thing that turned an almost certain victory into such a defeat the tigers played a game lacking in science and were not very far advanced in passing the ball which is usually about half the game lehigh played as fine a pasing game and every time they were within scoring distance a princeton back would by chance manage to boot the leather sphere out of danger **"* princeton had a fine man m cooper who played at center for ward batz played the stellar role for old south mountain bringing in one goal made by the brown an d white team the lehigh offensive seemed to lack co-ordination in the first half and cooper the elusive tiger forward succeeded in piercing the brown and white defense for two counters his team-mate barnouw also located the net for a counter in the second half the brown and white found themselves to some extent and showed some sparkling bits of soccer even in this half honors were evenly divided both teams scoring twice batz and fernandez two of le high's aggressive forwards each netted well directed boots in the tiger goal after the ball had been successfully passed down the field by good team work bar nouw again placed the ball with in the uprights for princeton during this period and his team mate brent lehigh university the brown and white team cheered on by 10,000 lehigh rooters succeeded in twisting the tiger's tail in his own den by holding the princeton tigers to a 0-0 score not only did le high succeed in holding the nas sau warriors but she far out played them gaining more ground and making more first downs than did bill roper's men even though princeton is con sidered to be one hundred per cent better than last year the brown and white team estab lished its superiority over their widely famed opponents lehigh was represented by a most wonderful cheering section estimated as being 10,000 strong and which occupied the entire west side of palmer stadium from the time that lehigh's six ty piece band marched onto the field until the battle was over the west stand rang steadily with lehigh cheers previous to the game the streets of prince ton were lined with lehigh sup porters and in the stadium they far outnumbered the orange and black delegation it was a won derful demonstration of lehigh spirit and loyal alumni came from all parts of the country to see the game the game opened with lehigh receiving but the brown and white contented themselves with playing safe and soon punted well down into the opponents zone from there on the game was very evenly fought through out the first half each team fighting for possession of the ball well in the midfield by the end of the half lehigh was play ing in wonderful form and it was a very expectant lehigh crowd that waited for the brown and white to make its appearance for the second half the game proved more thril ling in the second half and in the third quarter lehigh was in po sition to try for a field goal le win attempted a drop kick from the forty-yard line but he was hurried too much and the boot went wide of the goal in the final quarter princeton intercepted a forward pass and thus put the ball in place so that drews was able to attempt a drop kick the attempt was poor and lehigh was in posses sion of the ball on her thirty-five yard line hess punted but the kick had little distance and a princeton back signalled for a fair catch on his forty-five yard line still within striking dis tance drews attempted a free kick from placement again princeton failed and thus lost two chances for a score in less than a minute shortly after in this thrilling quarter hess brought the lehigh stands to an uproar when he swept around left end for a thir ty-yard gain in the very next play hess faked a forward pass to the right side of the field stopped and hurled a pass into the arms of burke who eluded his two pursuers and carried the ball across the goal line the west stands became a roaring mass but lehigh's joy was short lived in making his run burke had stepped out of bounds on the thirteen-yard line thus causing the ball to become dead at that place the next two plays failed to gain and a dropkick was again resorted to this failing little time remained to attempt anoth er drive and the game closed with the two teams battling in midfield the statistics showed that le high won nine first downs as compared to princeton's five and gained eighty-seven more yards than princeton the play by halves : last half princeton kicked off with le high defending the north goal after one line buck lehigh kick ed and held princeton for three downs solidly again came an exchange of punts in which sla gle the star princeton back ran the ball back 45 yards on prior's kick the ground gained was lost on the next play however by slagle's fumble giving le high the ball on her 25-yard line prior again punted out of dan ger and slagle ran it back princeton was held for downs and was forced to kick the ball went behind the lehigh goal line and was put into action again on the 20-yard line lehigh then launched a grand offensive carrying the ball deep into the tiger territory a goal might have been scored had not princeton intercepted a forward pass on her own 30-yard line slagle being responsible for the intercepted forward mellinger lead off the brown and white attack with a beauti ful end run for 25 yards around princeton's right end for a first down coming thus early in the game it ga v e princeton a se vere shock and greatly strength ened the morale of lehigh the team was still nervous however prior gained first down in midfield but lehigh was again penalized prior got free again seve nyards around right end this greer followed up with four more for first down on princeton's 42-yard line eight yards more gained by prior let loose a furious shout of joy from the lehigh rooters the brown and white was now deep into enemy ground a line plunge just failed to make first down then lehigh made the costly mistake of trying a for ward instead of the successful line-plunging a long pass by prior was intercepted by slagle who caught it on the twenty yard line and ran it back to mid field a few more plays and an exchange of punts closed the quarter by the second quarter th"e teams had settled down to a close deadlock with many exchanges of kicks lehigh was penalized severely else her offensive would have been much more effective i continued on page 3 col 2 amid a perfect bower of
