alumni banquet the annual banquet of the le high university club of washing ton was held saturday evening march 17 at welcker's hotel it was a most enjoyable affair and the number of guests was quite large the places at the table were taken at about 9 o'clock ; felix freyhold president of the , club acting as toastmaster and proving himself a most witty one the toast " our common bond was responded to by p w birney the lehigh club by 0 w haines ; " the broadway squad by r parker smith ; " our bene dicts by james w henderson ; athletics by p j dastiiell latter day saints by l n grillis and " the ladies of lima by j d foster the responses were brief and witty shop visits junior mechanicals eighteen of the junior mechani cals in charge of instructor heck took the 7.03 train on monday the 19th to inspect high speed engines in the vicinity of new york city the first morning was spent on cortlandt street and in the after noon the two power houses of the brooklyn electric railway were visited tuesday morning found the party in the shops on dey and cortlandt streets and during the afternoon they inspected ihe edison power station and the light sta tions on wall and pearl streets together with the power house of the brooklyn bridge cable on this afternoon they fell in with the senior chemists and greetings were exchanged on wednesday morning the edison plant on twenty-sixth street the engine rooms of the equitable building and a number of places on broadway were ex amined part of the men stopped at the clarendon in brooklyn and the the remainder at the sturtevant they left jersey city for bethlehem or their respective homes on wed nesday afternoon senior chemists eight senior chemists left for a tour on last tuesday morning dr chandler was met at jersey the southern trip the team arrived in washington at noon on wednesday and went to the ebbitt house it was rain ing in the afternoon but the team went to the grounds at 4 o'clock it was found to be too wet to play and they returned to the hotel at 8 o'clock on thursday the team left washington for char lottesville where they arrived at noon the weather was very warm and the game was called at 3:30 lehigh's battery was jackson and mcclunsj and virginia's nelson and marshall virginia made 10 hits and lehigh 3 lehigh 10 errors and virginia 2 earned runs lehigh 1 virginia 4 struck out by nelson 10 by jackson 4 the score by innings was as follows : univ of virginia 0 15 10 2 10 1—11 lehigh 00011000 2—4 the team arrived at richmond at 2 p m on friday the game with richmond college was called at 4 p m at island park the weather was very warm and the grounds poor the sun was directly in the fielders eyes and made it very hard to judge fly-balls anthony and johnson were the battery for richmond for lehigh dinan and mcclung were the bat tery for the first two innings jackson and mcclung for the next four and mcclung and burley for the last three lehigh made 10 hits richmond made 4 off of dinan 8 off of jackson and 2 off of mcolung lehigh had 9 errors richmond 4 struck out by an thony 6 by dinan 1 by jackson 3 by mcclung 4 the score by in nings was as follows : richmond 33112100 2—13 lehigh 20021002 0—7 at midnight the team left rich mond and arrived at chapel hill at 11 a m saturday the weather was fairer and cooler ; game called at 3 o'clock caro lina as all the other teams met on the trip showed the advantage of much longer work in the field the college must remember that the team was unable to play on the diamond before they left so their team work has been very poor but improved greatly as the trip pro gressed ; the same can be said of the batting while the box has been weak all through carolina has the strongest nine the team met on the trip ; lehigh did the best battings she has done on the trip getting 13 hits while carolina got 12 the fielding was still weak with 8 errors ' for the team ; he was caught by oldham for lehigh jackson pitched a good game giving carolina eight hits and striking out six men ; mcclung caught lehigh fre quently had men left on bases and bailed to bunch their hits bases on balls : off stephens 6 ; thence to the jersey^city paper mills with which mr stratford's father is connected tuesday afternoon was spent in the it s assay office on wall street and the babbitt soap works wednesday morning tiffany's was visited and the men took turns in examining the large yellow diamond valued at one hundred thousand dollars in the afternoon the coal gas works on twenty-third street and the water-gas works on forty-fourth street both the prop erty of the consolidated gas com pany were examined on thurs day morning they proceeded to columbia university and passed through the museum and chemical laboratory which latter is not nearly equal to our own here at lehigh ; the remainder of the morn ing was spent at the schaeffer brewery a train was taken in the afternoon for the works of the standard oil company at bayonne new jersey where each man re ceived a cake of paramne as a souvenir on friday they crossed the river to brooklyn ; havemeyer's sugar refinery and the nichols chemical works at laurel hill underwent an inspection the party were entertained at the sturtevant lehigh s headquarters and on sat urday of their own accord enjoyed the metropolitan museum ; they left jersey city in the evening while dr chandler remained to spend easter there both the me chanicals and the chemists were treated with the greatest courtesy throughout and desire to return thanks for the many kindnesses received hereafter the degrees of civil engineering and mechanical engin eering will not be given at stan ford but instead the degree of engineer with special mention of the department as engineer in mechanical engineering will be given , — crimson . lacrosse will be played at uni versity of wisconsin this season weyhing is coaching the penn sylvania pitchers the harvard nine will take no spring trip this year stanford university has declined the challenge of university of cali fornia to a boat race to be held this spring the daily palo alto and the harvard crimson have appeared upon our exchange table the past week
