track athletics anyone who has entertained the thought that interest in our track athletics is on the wane should take a stroll down to the field during the latter part of a forenoon or in the middle of the afternoon he will see from five to ten men on the track training for sprints and long runs on any day when the weather will permit it there are two weeks more in which to train and the men evidently realize the shortness of the time for they are working hard if the judgment of our best athletes is to be relied upon we shall take nearly all the points in the lehigh-lafayette sports and the prospects are favor able that we will make a far bet ter showing than usual in the state sports which will be held at state college this year it seemed to be up-hill work at first but now our gymnasium director has finally aroused in the students something like his own athletic enthusiasm the track is being well repaired and with this increased enthusiasm which the men are showing the outlook is very bright state oratorical contest the executive committee of the pennsylvania inter-collegiate ora torical union which met at allen town last wednesday decided to hold the annual contest wednesday may 16 at 8 p m in the academy of music at auentown the date had previously been arranged for the 19th but was changed in order not to conflict with the state sports at state college the judges will probably be hon win ashman judge of the orphans court phila delphia ; judge harvey of allen town and eev w w barker of phillipsburg n j lehigh's representative will be merrill 94 who will take as h:'s subject " pickett's charge at gettysburg the alternate is warr 95 one reason for the selection of auentown as the place of contest was its nearness to le high and lafayette it is expected therefore that there will be large delegations of students from these two colleges the success of the union depends upon the interest manifested in it by the colleges and victory for lehigh will hinge largely on the support ■given its representative saturday's games many teams on the diamond but they are mostly unsuccessful auentown 9 ; lehigh 2 saturday's game with the al lentown club of the state league was interesting and the best game our team has yet played the error column was helped along considerably by the decisions of the auentown umpire the most palpable fault of the lehigh team is the lifeless manner in which with one or two excep tions they piajr this we think is in part due to the attitude of the university to wards its team if the college men would realize that their ball team is by no means a poor one and would give it some encouragement perhaps the nine would exhibit more liveliness in its play jackson pitched a fair game and bowie's work in the last two,in nings was promising mcclung caught well and n>ne of the auentown team attempted to steal a base on him smith and thompson fielded prettily and beggs batted well lehigh made a run in the first after two men were out smith hit a double to left and scored on moran's excusable muff of petri kin's long fly our second and last run was made in the third peck bunted to the pitcher and beat the ball to first went to third on a wild throw and home on a wild pitch following is the summary allentown lehigh innings earned runs allen town 4 two-base hits sweeney mulvey smitb ;. three-base hits mulvey milligan home run mulvey sac rifice hits sweeney donaghtie petriken bases on balls auentown 5 lehigh 2 struck out auentown 1 lehigh 6 double plays jackson petriken and mcclung petriken and smith wild pitch treat time ih 45 in ;
