on both occasions at the start of the contest it appeared as though the sophs would have an easy time of it as each man was set in approved form while the frosh remained upright as though they did not understand the proceedings however their muscle and size balanced their lack of form and they won the first attempt by dragging the sophs ten yards across the start ing line the upperclassmen de sired another chance at their op ponents and so it was decided to make the event a two out of three trials affair accordingly the two classes met again and this time the underclassmen were successful only working on all the likely prospects prompt response requested the track events on founder's day have maintained their repu tation as being the most thrill ing event of the program in years past this year's relay was a record-breaker in as much as it broke all past records for founder's day relays the for mer record of 3:47.5 held by the class of 19 was reduced to 3 44.4 by the fast stepping class of 28 who ran away from the sophs in easy fashion the frosh established a lead in the first heat and each succeeding heat was theirs by an increasing margin the sophomore team was composed of barba lead off man walborn second laudig third and brandon anchor man the frosh runners were aitken first randall second chicker ing third and billmeyer anchor man the frosh quartet proved to be a well balanced combina tion and each man covered his distance in approximately the same time the first lap was by far the closest and aitken 28 won over barba 27 by a few yards bar ba is a varsity cross-country man and winner of this year's wilbur prize while aitkene is a product of orange high barbe took an early lead but his fresh man opponent spurted on the fin al stretch and came in ahead randall running second for the freshman won his heat and in creased the freshman lead by ten yards the frosh third man chickering managed to add twenty yards to his lead so that by the time billmeyer re ceived the baton it was practical ly impossible for mrandon var sity track man running anchor for the sophs to tlnish ahead billmeyer was probably the most experienced man running for the frosh he prepped at york col legiate institute and while there he participated in the perm re lays three times and also won several medals in scholastic meets in philadelphia the time made by each man of the record breaking frosh team is as follows aitken 56.2 sec ; randall 56.3 sec ; chicker ing 56.3 sec billmeyer 56.1 sec the frosh were wholly back of their team and its success had much to do toward winning the entire meet the annual soph-ffosh foot ball game ended in a scoreless tie last wednesday the con test throughout showed evidence of that fight which is better known as class rivalry and proved to be one of the most in teresting games of inter-mural football that lehigh has wit nessed for some time the day was an ideal one for such a sport a gentle breeze was blowing and the gridiron just a little soggy the sophomores opened the game with a poor kickoff which was equally well received by the frosh the ball was put into action on the fifteen yard line from where the frosh succeeded in making a first down in three plays they were then held for three downs and on the fourth punted gould broke through and got his man as he caught the ball no substantial gains were made and they punt ed on the third down the frosh blocked the punt and got the ball on the twenty yard line two successive plungs through cen ter resulted in a first down here their attacks were stifled and they lost the ball on downs the sophs gained five yards on a fake punt but gave this up when they were thrown for a loss on a fumbled ball they were forced to punt melaney gained five yards and hand carried the ball ten yards around left end for another first down but a frosh recovered it with no loss a drop-kick exe cuted by the frosh failed and the ball was put into play on the twenty yard line an attemp ted left end run was foiled and the sophs made five yards through tackle but were forced to punt on the fourth down the frosh were twice held but se cured a first down when a five yard penalty was imposed upon the sophs for being off sides and a fifteen yard run by hand the frosh attempted the first pass of the game which was intercept ed and carried back five yards the next two passes on the part of the sophs were grounded and the half ended with the ball in the soohs possession on the forty yard line between the halves the an nual rope-tying contest took place and resulted in a victory for the sophomores a tally showing seven sophs up as com pared to two freshmen continued on page 4 col 7 lehigh's cross-country team is all set for a record season there is an encouraging
