of engineering and dr neil carothers dean of the college of business administration mayer heads dorm council at the organization meeting of the interdormitory council which has been dormant since the astp took over the dorms in june 1943 bob mayer was elected president and bob treser secretary-treas urer it was decided that dormitory section meetings should be held to determine whether students would prefer one dance with an orches tra or several dances with re corded music a coke machine concession was awarded to art maier chem feb 47 of section 2-b the council members present were tom winco ch e oct 44 and harry kern arts june 45 of 2-a al dicke m e feb 45 and earl compton feb 47 of 2-b bob treser ch e june 45 and tom mcnamara feb 47 of 3-a don shettel ch e feb 46 and jack bfcum e e feb 46 of 3-b and bob mayer ch e june 45 member at large these men represent the 79 stu dents now living on the second and third floors of drinker house old dormitory traditions are be ing renewed at drinker house by the various sections and the spirit of brotherhood which goes with dorm life is returning the bal anced combination of social and academic opportunities which dormitory life offers has brought many upperclassmen back to drinker house and they are now teaching the freshmen these bro therly traditions social activities are back in swing with scheduled interdorm athletic contests and those forth coming dances three man committee to run school three deans to take p president since uuly 1 1944 lehigh its students activities and physical plant have been under the direc tion of a three man administra tive committee this temporary board consisting of dr p m palmer dean of the college of arts and science as chairman dr a c callen dean of the college of engineering and dr neil car others dean of the college of business administration will as sume the duties of dr c c wil liams who retired as lehigh's president june 30 1944 this committee is authorized to carry out the policies and pro grams of the board of trustees of the university under the direc tion of the executive committee of the board the retiring lehigh president who succeeded the late dr charles russ richards in office saw many improvements in the university physical plant during his nine years of administration included were erection of the harry m ullmann annex to the chemistry building the henry sturgis drink er and charles russ richards dormitories the eugene g girace hall and various minor changes dr williams announced last tuesday june 27 1944 that he and his family will move to mad ison wisconsin where he will en gage in consultation practice in engineering and industrial educa tion creation of sayre park has helped beautify the campus one of the most attractive features of lehigh's campus grounds is the area known as sayre park located on the upper half of the north side of south mountain presented to the university in 1909 by the children of robert h sayre for whom the park is named it has under gone much development and beautification in the time elapsed since then and is now the site of 11 of lehigh's 30 fraternities starting at the road that runs in front of taylor dormitory and ex frosh outnumber returning students registration period at lehigh for the summer session and pres ent semester was held from june 21 to july 3 actually 291 per sons registered in the undergrad uate school with two women and 289 men making up this total this year's freshman class out numbers the other three classes combined with a total of 147 en rollments while the sophomore class contains 50 students the jun ior class 43 and the senior class also 43 the chemical engineer ing curriculum emerged as the most popular this semester with 63 students the school of me chanical engineering came second with 49 men electrical engineer ing third with 41 and the arts and science fourth with 37 en rollments the other curricula were filled as follows business 30 civil engineering 20 engineer ing physics 10 industrial engi neering 10 metallurgical engi neering 10 chemistry 7 mining engineering 5 general college division 5 and two undecided en gineering students m & c plans for summer the mustard and cheese club held a reorganization meeting wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock in drown hall there were 10 of the 17 mem bers present the purpose of the meeting was to determine the club's policy for the summer sem ester because of the absence of prof albert a rights faculty advisor there was little accom plished except that fritz yon ber gen ch e 044 president ap pointed a committee consisting of robert mayer ch e j'4s war ren fox ch e f'4s and allen goodman arts j'46 to obtain plays and consolidate suggestions made at the meeting this com mittee will report to the club at the next meeting which will be held wednesday july 12 at 4 o'clock in drown hall and on the basis of this report the program for the current semester will be set up the plans for the summer in clude either an evening of the cabaret type held last may a reg ular three act play or a series of two or three one act plays it was urged that any talent on the cam pus come out to make a success of whatever project is selected and as a result win admission into the society town group to elect officers william pettit bus oct 45 president pro-tempore of the town group has called a general meet ing of the town group to elect new officers president vice presi dent secretary treasurer and sports manager the new student directory will be distributed to all members present the incoming athletic manager will begin his duties by organiz ing a softball team to play against the four dormitory sections and to compete with the fraternities and dorm sections for the university intramural softball championship other business to be discussed will be the possibilities of the town group's cooperating with the dormitory sections in having a summer dance the town group with the co operation of the registrar's office has again undertaken the respon sibility of publishing a new stu dent directory this directory will contain the name bethlehem ad dress and section telephone num ber and hometown address of all undergraduate students free copies of the directory are to be given to the town men and to each university department fra ternity and dormitory men will be able to receive a copy of the di rectory after wednesday july 12 at the supply bureau the price to men other than town men is 15 cents new men needed in lehigh band this semester the lehigh band directed by dr t e shields sin cerely urges all students exhibit ing musical talent incoming fresh men in particular to apply for a position with the band the band which consists of 6 trumpets 2 euphoniums 3 trom bones 1 bass 1 flute 1 bassoon 5 clarinets 3 saxophones and 1 alto horn is sorely in need of drum mers and horn players however all instrumentalists are encour aged to participate in this semes ter's program the band under the present direction of dave gerb arts 46 holds practice ses sions every tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the basement of grace hall those men interested in this form of student activity may take band in preference to military and drill and may be excused continued on page 3 tending the top of south mountain it has an altitude rise of over 400 feet and towers over the new street entrance by almost 600 feet the original area covers 21 acres and was lately added to by the university's acquisition of the aboretum located on the far end of the mountain the first fraternity house to be built in this area was delta up continued on page 4 included in the gift to the uni versity was an endowment sum of 100,000 for the purpose of devel oping the area this fund 45,000 of which is left has been put to excellent use and as a result large patches of the mountainside which were all but devoid of vegetation are now luxuriantly planted with a wide variety of evergreen and hardwood trees the arboretum has more than 280 types of native pennsylvania trees and is used as a nursery to supply new trees to the park when they are needed the endowment was also used for the construction of the inter-wind ing road system debating club organizes for summer discussions last night one of the few re maining student activities socie ties the debating club held its first meeting of the semester in drown hall included in the discussion were plans of possible intramural de bating intercollegiate debating and open forum discussions on current topics the members pres ent expressed a desire to secure a club room where material will be available for the study of prob lems and the preparation of speeches for regular debates jack tuberty club president said that some of the work had been done on the problems of scheduling of intercollegiate contests l u chem society holds special meeting wednesday morning at 11 o'clock the seniors and juniors of the le high chemistry society held a re organization meeting to determine whether or not the club would be active during the summer semes ter there were 25 of the 63 chems and ch e.s in the school present since blame ferrel president has left with the rotc david kirk ch e 044 vice president pre sided the group decided to carry on with its usual general meeting plan and to sponsor a picnic early in august kirk was charged with the task of obtaining a committee to formulate these plans and present them at a gen eral meeting of the entire society which will be held in the near fu ture the club wants all fresh men and sophomore chems and ch e.s to become active and be come acquainted with their course society notices . . . an important organization meeting of the lehigh university debating society will be held mon day evening july 10 at 8:00 in the basement of drown hall all freshmen and upperclassmen in terested are invited to attend a mustard and cheese meeting will be held wednesday
