students opposed special hp plans ended vol 76 — no 50 bethlehem pa — friday may 21 1965 five faculty members who have served the university for a com bined total of 188 years will of ficially retire as of july 1 1965 dr harvey a neville president emeritus dr robert d billinger associate professor of chemistry dr frederick a bradford profes sor and former head of the depart ment of finance dr ernest b schulz professor of political sci ence and dr lawrence whitcomb associate professor of geology are retiring dr neville scientist teacher and educational administrator was named president emeritus octo ber 11 1964 dr neville has serv ed as the chief admistrative of ficer of the university since the death of dr martin d whitaker in august 1960 he was named president october 8 1961 the ex-president came to the pledges observe arcadians action see five page 3 university in 1927 as assistant professor of chemistry he was named dean of the graduate school in 1949 and was promoted to the position of vice president and provost in 1956 from 1945 to 1960 he served as director of the institute of research he received his bachelor of arts degree from randolph-macon college in 1918 his master of arts degree from princeton university in 1920 and his doctor of philos ophy degree in 1921 from prince ton in 1952 he was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by randolph-macon in 1962 he was awarded an honorary doctor of human letters by moravian col lege and also received an honor ary doctor of laws degree from lafayette college in 1963 cording to goldmann goldmann also said that there was much positive response to the idea of a panel discussion on the topic of sex and morality provided that it be held apart from houseparty he said that if student interest continued a panel discussion of this nature would be planned for sometime in the spring probably during the middle of the week in conjunction with the uni versity centennial celebration the panel would include a well-known liberal moralist a theologian and a prominent sociologist the panel discussion will be geared to the par ticular problems of the student and not to something for the alumni bulletin if the students don't want anything nothing will be done said goldmann the abandoned plans would have scheduled a panel discussion of lehigh's expansion plans on the thursday evening before houseparty friday classes would have been suspended to encourage attendance at a two-part problem ses sion for the lehigh graduate — 1966 the program would have continued with a for mal dance on friday evening and a concert by a popular artist on saturday afternoon frosh quad utility examined by elkus the student centennial committee has decided to abandon plans for a special university centennial celebration for next year's spring houseparty the class of 66 will sponsor a centennial ball in the hotel bethlehem on friday night of fall houseparty to replace the centennial celebration the plans for the spring centennial weekend were abandoned because the student centennial committee felt it would be too great a gamble stu dent opinion seemed to be against it the students expressed many of the problems cited in the brown and white editorial tuesday may 18 said steve goldmann chairman of the student centennial committee and president of the class of 66 plans for the centennial ball have already been formulated " said goldmann the semi-formal ball will feature the music of a big name dance band performing in the grand ball room of the hotel bethlehem in addition to the dance band a rock and roll band will perform in the main dining room and a small combo will be featured in the candle light room the ball taking the place of the traditional fri day night concert will be highlighted with a queen contest which will really be done up right ac there is no doubt in my mind that the institution within us moat stultifying to personal and aca demic growth is the freshman quad stated jonathan b elkus on monday his speech gryphons grades and the unholy grail was the second annual lecture sponsored by alpha sigma phi fraternity in the university center the segregated freshman quad bach's tops said the 1,000 listeners at last week's annual presentation of the bach festival in the packer memorial chapel another 1,000 are expected this weekend for the last performance of this year see quad's page 7 was formed in 1955 elkus an associate professor of music attri buted its formation to a period he termed the lehigh renaissance during this period many able students flunked out as a result of the ivory-tower toughness of keeping academic standards high elkus said as a result the ex pedient of the freshman quad was adopted most everyone would take the same core of courses freshmen would be separated from upper classmen and fraternity rushing would be delayed so that there would be a minimum of interrup tion of a freshman's concentration on his studies elkus suggested however that lehigh has outgrown the fresh man quad and that the freshmen have outgrown the gryphons there is something socially wrong when so many freshmen leave for the weekend these boys by 808 bachmann arcadia had an audience wednesday evening for the first time this semester to watch it pass what is probably the semester's most significant piece of legislation the legislation was a motion to require all student-directed organi zations to submit their financial statements and requests for cash sup port to arcadia financial support is currently controlled by the stu dent activities committee the audience was composed of eight members of the pledge class of delta chi the pledges entered just as the meeting was about to begin and the arcadians looked on in awe as the largest group to observe arcadia in action this year seated themselves the arcadia-approved motion will have to gain the approval of the board of publications and the student activities committee be fore it goes to the administration for action such approval seems likely the three organizations have besn textbook list printed inside see partial page 4 in order to help undergraduates who wish to purchase their text hooka before the fall semester starts the brown and white as the result of significant assistance from the faculty is publishing a list of texts and other material for most fall courses the brown and white sought and received these lists in good faith and has been assured that these are the same texts anl materials supplied to the campus bookstore five faculty to retire this july 866-0331 dr
