well as regular gym classes notes from the examination room on wednesday the seven teenth the class of 1923 was formally welcomed into lehigh university a hymn and brief chapel services conducted by rev d wilmot gateson preced ed the address of welcome by president c r richards dr richards prefaced his speech with the remarks that 425 freshmen entering this year au gurs well in the attainment of the goal of 1500 students en rolled at lehigh and that in sofar as it has been an out standing year in attendance he sincerely hopes that it will be outstanding in achievement as well dr charles russ richards de livered a splendid address on government referring to the desirability of every citizen in teresting himself in national government and pointing out the relation of democracy in na tional government and self government by college under graduates referring obviously to the prohibition amendment he c<i thafr liberty sliottm nm • be confused with license and that restrictions made upon our freedom to live and act in a manner contrary to that which has been determined as best by and for the majority of those concerned should not be consid ered as a loss of liberty dr richards expressed his desire to have the student set up their own self-government system adding that if you are unable to govern yourself you must be governed and little sym pathy can be extended to you if having had the opportunity for self control you cast it aside through indifference dr richards then introduced the new members of the faculty to the students and touched upon the salient points of their work prior their appointment at le high following dr r i c ha rd's speech the freshmen remained and were addressed by dean c m mcconn rev d wilmot gateson dr r c bull univer sity physician dr b l miller professor of geology and chair man on the committee lectures ; walter r okeson secretary of the alumni they all spoke to the freshmen on pertinent sub jects that are of value to the newcomer at lehigh a l bayles president of the arcadia then touched upon university and freshmen life and was well received by the freshmen the frosh then made a gen eral exit from the chapel to run the gaunt of terse remarks and critical scrutiny from the last year's freshman and upper classmen assembled outside the lehigh university foot ball squad has been practicing the past two weeks an early start was made beginning about a week before the college opened the practice on taylor field since then has been going along as smoothly as can be expected for such an early date lehigh hopes that by getting an early start to be able to turn out a bet ter team for the opening game on saturday october fourth so far there have been about fifty-five men out with the hope that they will be able to do their share in this year's football last monday the 1923 football letter-men had a meeting and elected william c greer better known as poss greer as the captain for the coming season last year he played a very con sistent game at full-back ana lehigh is looking to him again this year to help in a tight situ ation when a few yards are need ed for » f rst down or a touch down f the-backfiekt prospects-tiiis year in addition to greer look very favorable this important part of the team has been v€ry materially strengthened by the return of morgan and mellinger they have returned to the grid iron after an absence of a sea son a lot of time has been used in developing the pos sibilities of the punters four men have been practicing this art which is becoming so impor tant after the change in the rules prior hayes morgan and hess have been practicing daily the past two weeks have been crowded for football men with strenuous early practice occa sional scrimmages and the rush of registration the gridiron men have found little time to rest aching backs and limbs coach baldwin is rapidly whipping the material into shape however and practice has improved daily the men have been taking the buf feting good naturedly and are hoping that a snap of real foot ball weather will soon set in some of the outstanding men with chances for the first squad are burke walker merrill yeager hoffman hayes ste vens wilson thum brown lewis ditrich harmon mor gan hess lewin cheel prior raleigh greer levitz shultz evans littell and cannon this includes about half the total squad of this group twelve are from the backfield thus the back field this year should be strong and versatile the lineup at the scrimmages 30 far has been as follows l end walker l tackle lewis center dietrich et guard hoffman r tackle yeager r end burke quarter-back prior l half-back mellinger r half-back stevens full-back greer capt twelve competitors have turned out for assistant man continued on page 2 column 3 on september 10 coach cus ick issued the first call for can didates for the freshmen foot ball team and received such a wealth of material that it was necessary to call upon bosey's assistance to adequately handle the squad _ jjlfejsfluadjleat jsfiprtini con sisted of thirty-five backs and twenty-five line candidates a squad fully two teams larger than the varsity and nearly as heavy although the first game is but two weeks away coach cusick has so far been drilling his pro teges in nothing but fundamen tals charging blocking falling on the ball and punting forming the first week's practice satur day september 20 in coppee hall the first skull practice was held plays and formations being outlined and studied this week the work will as sume more serious proportions with tackling running down punts and line scrimmage form ing the bulk of the work the first real scrimmage will prob ably be held during the latter part of the week according to coach cusick the lineup for the first game will not be known until five minutes be fore the whistle blows the schedule has been com pleted with all dates filled except oct 11 it is probable that an opponent will be secured for that date before the season opens the freshmen open the season with wyoming seminary away the same day the varsity opens with gettysburg here the season closes here with lafayette frosh on the morning of the le high-lafayette game the sche dule is by no means an easy one but with the present material and the able coaching of cusick and bosey the season should be a success the schedule follows : october 4 wyoming semin ary away october 18 rutgers frosh away october 25 blair academy away november 1 mercersburg academy away november 8 baltimore city college at home november 15 allentown prep at home november 22 lafayette frosh at home notice meeting of brown and white competitors for business staff drown hall friday 11.50 important during the physical examina tions which were held last week by the health department of the university the following observa tions were made by the exam iners most of the men are in need of posture training and about 75 per cent of the first year men have faulty postures contrasting this about 80 per cent of the upper classmen have good postures this fact alone would tend to point to the fact that most of the elementary schools have not given proper instruction in body positions about 60 per cent of the first year men have low right should ers a fault that needs immediate attention the physical educa tion department is making every effort to instruct men in the ele ments of good posture and any student who was told by the ex aminers that his posture was not what it might be is urged to report to this department for corrective exercises the physi cal education department is try ing to organize outing clubs sim ilar to those of large eastern colleges any man who is inter ested in hiking horseback rid ing golf or any other outdoor ex ercise will report to professor bartlet steps will be taken to organize such outing clubs if enough of the students manifest a desire for them this year the lehigh univer sity varsity football team faces a hard schedule in the form of the following teams gettys burg princeton dickinson rut gers muhlenberg holy cross villanova and last and best la fayette the holy cross princeton and lafayette games are the only ones in which coach bald win's charges will invade for eign ground the lehigh men are going through rigorous training work in order to put them in the best possible shape for the opening pimes with gettysburg gettysburg has been stren ously training so as to give the brown and white men a good run for their money princeton coached by bill roper is a very dangerous enemy although princeton has had no scrimmage practice they have had much drill on the dum my and class room fundamen tals through graduation the tig ers have lost their punting nd drop kicking mainstays gerlg smith these positions seem to be satisfactorily filled between dignan a ball player gibson slagle williams and ewing hills and gates two olympic stars are making hard fights fox places on the line the chances are that hills will be a guard and gates a tackle beatie is working hard and has a good chance to make a tackle position with a little more experience caldwell a last year man is in the fullback position he was out last year much of the time due to injuries but seems to be in best condition this year the wing positions are well taken care of by captain stout and til son this team is in the run ning for an excellent season le high will have 0 toe the scratch to win the second game of the season played at princeton new jersey due to the loss of the veter ans daily templin harter thomas and bahman from tht dickinson lineup there are many holes to be filled there is keen competition among the undergraduates for positions on the regular team coach light ner is having a hard time select ing a quintet from a number of men who made excellent prepar atory school records last season some of these will be in the line up for the opener with alleg heny college after the mead ville lid lifter a better line can be had on the dickinson squad rutgers is out for blood this season jack wallace the new coach has great things expected of him he succeeds sanford who for ten years held the reins at rutgers wallace has been training the team for a week and has changed many old con ventional ideas as to football at that school captain brennan will be at center this year oth er veterans are benkert gibson chandler hanf johnson sing er and perrine for the back field and kieman bender lin continued on page 4 column 6 work in gymnasium classes begins this week every stu dent
