sixty-three financial aid recipients who have cars registered with biiildings and grounds did not list their cars on their financial aid applications this fact became known during a study made in june 1964 by theron l kropp executive secretary for the committee on under graduate financial aid to provide the committee with information which eventually led to its decision on ownership and/or operation of cars by financial aid recipients kropp said that no action was taken against these students nor were they notified that their ownership had been discovered i would be less than honest if economics 3 incident held the center of attraction as arcadia xix held its second meeting wednesday evening the executive committee met last sunday evening to determine what action should be taken by the council to insure that eco 3 stu dents would be dealt with fairly on monday afternoon maury b poscover 66 president robert s young 66 vice-president stewart early 66 treasurer and charles c zall chairman of the academic policy committee met with pres ident w deming lewis glenn j christensen and charles a seidle to discuss the situation the arcadians decided that the following points should be acted upon the incomplete should be removed from the record of all students concerned the cumula tive average of the students should be recomputed and the students parents should be informed of the grades of students in that course dr l reed tripp dean of the college of business administration announced wednesday that grades of all students in economics 3 in the fall semester will be computed by prof firestone in consultation with myself taking into account the final examination at its originally announced weight the decision followed meetings between the administration the executive committee of arcadia and the economics department dr w deming lewis university president dr glenn j christensen provost and vice president dr charles a seidle vice president for administration dr frederic n firestone associate professor of eco nomics dr elmer c bratt head of the economics department and tripp took part in discussions of the matter bratt said this decision was made by tripp firestone and himself and that firestone agreed with the decision he said the examination would be given the weight announced by firestone to his class at the beginning of the semester the controversy sprang up when the business college's safe was found open during the examination period it was feared that students had obtained copies of the final so incomplete grades were given to the 41 students whose perform ance on the examination was markedly superior to their per formance during the semester firestone in conjunction with dean tripp planned to give a re examination until it was discov see disputed page 7 tripp's statement the following statement was made on feb 17 1965 by dr l reed trip dean of the college of business administration from the beginning of the eco nomics 3 affair all steps taken were intended to maintain the integrity of grading in this course widespread misunderstanding has developed however and the col lege of business administration wants to allay any possible fears of injustice to students there fore grades of all students in eco nomics 3 in the fall semester will be recomputed by professor fire stone in consultation with myself taking into account the maximum efficiency from each dollar spent we just don't have that much we're out to help kids not to shoot them down he said this is why the university exists if you have a kid who is red-hot and you don't have the money for him what are you going to do as of oct 1 1964 593 students were receiving a total of 701,671 in financial aid the average aid received was 1,183.26 in making a study for the committee prior to approving the regulation kropp found that nearly one-third of the financial aid recipients owned cars kropp said the committee has a certain amount of money with which it must help as many students as possible the committee feels that the owner ship and/or operation of motor vehicles by under graduates is a luxury not a necessity acquiring a college education is the most im portant objective of the student and he must be see new page 7 by william hylton financial aid recipients will not be permitted to own or operate cars in bethlehem next semester unless they are willing to take a 300 cut in their financial aid a few exceptions will be permitted but will be limited largely to commuting students all financial aid recipients today received letters informing them of the new policy of the committee on undergraduate financial aid financial aid is the difference paid toward the total cost of an education at lehigh after the stu dent and his family have contributed as much as they can toward the total this includes all athletic scholarships the letter states that the students affected will receive a form on which they must indicate whether they will have a car and take the 300 cut in aid or will not have a car those who elect to have a car must register the car with buildings and grounds violators of the rule will lose their aid they will be
