work all students are again re minded that places are still open for the convention at sil ver bay from june 12th to 20th any student interested should sign up immediately and it is again emphasized that a marvelous time is in store for those who participate in the convention organization receiving much cor respondence offering vacation employment with the approach of the summer vacation there comes to many of the students on the campus the thought of finding some kind of work for this per iod either for the sake of kil ling time or for the more im portant reason of providing means of returning to college next fall undoubtedly there are several of these men who have not yet decided what they ex pect to do or where they want to do it the y m c a office at drown hall is the target at which many different types of business concerns direct corres pondence concerning the men they need to carry on their work during these three months at present there is correspon dence here from more than a dozen companies offering vari ous propositions to a large num ber of men the y m c a is not sponsoring any of these schemes but is merely acting in the capacity of a go-between in the matter rcord breaking performances by brown and white feature high scorers nosed out by rutgers saturday witnessed one of the most spectacular and well run track meets that have been seen on taylor field for a great num ber of years in fact that day found the brown and white team in rare form as the follow ing facts many of them record breaking will clearly show al though the final results of the meet found the lehigh track men wanting in two points to win from rutgers the out standing performance of the day was in the stellar work of captain jose carol jimmy croll smith and gisriel carol who has been one of the mainstays of coach kan aly's team for the past four years and captain of it this year ran his last meet for lehigh saturday in a most creditable manner in the 100-yard dash carol did the record breaking time of 9 4-5 seconds breaking his own record of 10 seconds made last year this new record is one which will stand the test of a great number of years and lehigh is most fortunate in hav ing such a star as carol then in the 220-yard dash carol not content with his record in the century ran away with this dash in the time 21 3-5 seconds again breaking his record per formance of last season the other record broken was the discus which gisriel one of th most promising of the fresh men class threw to a distance of 120 feet 7 inches the other high point scorers in this meet were croll and smith croll ran a close second to carol in the 100 was just nosed out of second place in the 220 and ran one of the prettiest quarters that has been seen in some time he winning it in 52 3-5 seconds smith won both the 120 and 220 yard hurdles handily coming close to the rec ord in both the wininng of the javelin by willis was another surprise of the meet he hurling the spear 151 feet 10 inches being almost twenty feet fur ther than he has ever thrown it lehigh uncorked another sur prise when sanford and raleigh romped away with first and sec ond places in the broad jump defeating the powerful maroon jumpers the shot put and the pole vault on the other hand were deceisive victories for rut gers in the high jump glenn bowler and sheppard tied for second place the jump being won by gibson of rutgers gis continued on faye 3 column t the lehigh chapter of pi delta epsilon the honorary journalistic fraternity went to easton on sunday where they installed the 89th chapter of ihis national fraternity in all twelve men who represent the lafayette publications were in itiated in a very impressive ceremony these men repre sented the lafayette a news paper the lyre which is a monthly comic and their year book this organization which has chapters in many of the loading universities of the coun try is doing very good work in the field of college publications and the chapters at lehigh and lafayette are going to work in close harmony due to the close proximity of their respective colleges child of his pen will appear in chicago magazine poetry dr charles k meschter of the english department has written a very interesting essay on orchestral poetry this essays explains the motive un derlying the poetic technique and typography used by a great many poets in france italy spain england and america this essay will appear in a forthcoming number of poe try a magazine of verse pub lished in chicago and should be of interest to lehigh as well as literary circles dr meschter has spent a gerat deal of time on this essay and has made a great study of this particular kind of opetry no doubt a great many of the english students would like to read this essay and be come acquainted with this type of poetic verse the university of pennsyl \ ania tennis team was defeated by a score of 5 to 2 on the le high courts last saturday the match scheduled with the team from the brooklyn polytechnic institute was not played because of the condition of the courts the courts were in a very wet state from recent rains on friday every effort was made to put the courts in playing co.n dition-in time for the match but the work was to no avail the courts heavy with water were rolled and even lined in the hope that the sun would prove adequate in drying off the courts the poly team appeared on the scene but there was no playing one step on the courts fehowed their condition the soft clay adhered to the soles of the shoes making playing impossi ble the matcn was therefore called off the next day the courts were n sufficiently good shape for the match with the university of pennsylvania this match attracted small attention and ihe audience was extremely small in spite of the small en couragement offered the team by the student body they came through with a well merited vic tory mercur playing first singles won his match easily captain koegler succumbed to the prowess of his opponent and lost his match the three remaining singles players law all hagenbuck and van dyke all won their matches making the score 4 to 1 captain koeg ler paired off with lawall won lheir match in the doubles mac fadden and frauenheim were less fortunate in the second doubles match and lost to the pennsylvania players the final score of the match then stood at 5 to 2 this is a very credit able showing and the univer sity has a right to ue proud of its tennis team the condition of the courts made practice dif ficult before the match in view of this fact the achievement of the team should receive greater praise this match should be an ex cellent preparatory one for the encounter with lafayette to morrow this will be the first of two matches scheduled with ihe maroon and white team this one will be played on the lafayette courts at easton the return gsme which will come later in the season will be play ed on the home courts accord ing to the information available the chances of winning rest with the lehigh team the same men who played against penn sylvania will appear to repre sent the brown and white learn the selection will be made from the following men mer cur captain koegler lawall hageiibuck van dyke mac faddon and frauenheim fine playing of mitchell and groner aid in victory over perm held visitors scoreless before the largest crowd of spectators of the season the la crosse team of the university of pennsylvania went into action on taylor field last saturday against the brown and white stickmen with but the result of a 5-0 defeat to show for their ef forts displaying much better teamwork and superior passing ihan has been shown thus far this season the home twelve tallied several nice shots against one of the league contenders for the lacrosse championship al though the red and blue had several very good men on their stick team the team work which is most essential failed to penerate the stalwart lehigh defense for a single goal this in a great part is due to the ef forts of gruhn and mckenzie who were faithfully backed by the ever watchful goalie sch wimmer who stopped many tries to penetrate to the net outstanding play on the le high twelve is credited to gron er and mitchell who by their constant harassing of the penn sylvania defenders made it possible to score the five shots very easily also much pretty running and passing placed the brown and white in an oppor tune position of which advan tage was quickly taken with the resulting goal being chalked up on lehigh's page of the score sheet mitchell played a splendid game in every respect playing his man running passing and dodging and also being respon sible in a large measure to the success of the engineers al though mcßride did not start the game coach o'neill put him in the last ten minutes in which time he proved a constant source of opposition to his op ponents smith also scored a very neat goal under hazardous circumstances and added an other point to the brown and white score although the game was not marred by any penalties or men being taken out it was closely contested and in the heat of the fray there were a few minor struggles which might have proved disastrous if it were not for the fine sportsmanship shown by the players of both teams coach o'neill expects a victory from the team with the same fight in the next league continued on pugc 2 a great num ber of years in fact that day found the brown and white team in rare form as the follow ing facts many of them record breaking will clearly show al though the final results of the meet found the lehigh track men wanting in two points to win from rutgers the out standing performance of the day was in the stellar work of captain jose carol jimmy croll smith and gisriel carol who has been one of the mainstays of coach kan aly's team for the past four years and captain of it this year ran his last meet for lehigh saturday in a most creditable manner in the 100-yard dash carol did the record breaking time of 9 4-5 seconds breaking his own record of 10 seconds made last year this new record is one which will stand the test of a great number of years and lehigh is most fortunate in hav ing such a star as carol then in the 220-yard dash carol not content with his record in the century ran away with this dash in the time 21 3-5 seconds again breaking his record per formance of last season the other record broken was the discus which gisriel one of th most promising of the fresh men class threw to a distance of 120 feet 7 inches the other high point scorers in this meet were the brooklyn polytechnic institute was not played because of the condition of the courts the courts were in a very wet state from recent rains on friday every effort was made to put the courts in playing co.n dition-in time for the match but the work was to no avail the courts heavy with water were rolled and even lined in the hope that the sun would prove adequate in drying off the courts the poly team appeared on the scene but there was no playing one step on the courts fehowed their condition the soft clay adhered to the soles of the shoes making playing impossi ble the matcn was therefore called off the next day the courts were n sufficiently good shape for the match with the university of pennsylvania this match attracted small attention and ihe audience was extremely small in spite of the small en couragement offered the team by the student body they came through with a well merited vic tory mercur playing first singles won his match easily captain koegler succumbed to the prowess of his opponent and lost his match the three remaining singles players law all hagenbuck and van dyke all won their matches making the score 4 to 1 captain koeg ler paired off with lawall won lheir match in the doubles mac fadden and frauenheim were less fortunate in the second doubles match and lost to the pennsylvania players the final score of the match then stood at 5 to 2 this is a very credit able showing and the univer sity has a right to ue proud of its tennis team the condition of the courts made practice dif ficult before the match in view of this fact the achievement of the team should receive greater praise this match should be an ex cellent preparatory one for the encounter with lafayette to morrow this will be the first of two matches scheduled with ihe maroon and season the la crosse team of the university of pennsylvania went into action on taylor field last saturday against the brown and white stickmen with but the result of a 5-0 defeat to show for their ef forts displaying much better teamwork and superior passing ihan has been shown thus far this season the home twelve tallied several nice shots against one of the league contenders for the lacrosse championship al though the red and blue had several very good men on their stick team the team work which is most essential failed to penerate the stalwart lehigh defense for a single goal this in a great part is due to the ef forts of gruhn and mckenzie who were faithfully backed by the ever watchful goalie sch wimmer who stopped many tries to penetrate to the net outstanding play on the le high twelve is credited to gron er and mitchell who by their constant harassing of the penn sylvania defenders made it possible to score the five shots very easily also much pretty running and passing placed the brown and white in an oppor tune position of which advan tage was quickly taken with the resulting goal being chalked up on lehigh's page of the score sheet mitchell played a splendid game in every respect playing his man running passing and dodging and also being respon sible in a large measure to the success of the engineers al though mcßride did not start the game coach o'neill put him in the last ten minutes in which time he proved a constant source of opposition to his op ponents smith also scored a very neat goal under hazardous circumstances and added an other point to the brown and white score although the game was not marred by any penalties or men being taken out it was closely contested and in the heat of the fray there were a few minor struggles which might have proved disastrous if it were not for the fine sportsmanship shown by the players of both teams coach o'neill expects a victory from the team with the same fight in the next league continued on pugc 2
