qualities which bring success which he developed into a very interesting discourse professor stoughton commented on the various quali ties which go to make up the successful man of today a few of the main topics presented in his lecture are as follows benjamin franklin in his autobiography tells that while still in his teens he formed a resolution to become perfect he thought he was a free agent and always could do the right thing if he wanted to but he soon found that no man is master of his own will and that every man is a creation of the past a bundle of accumulated memories and habits so franklin being intensely practical decided to acquire what virtues he could and gave up the hope of having them all several studies have been made of the virtues which make successful men lord beaver brook a self-made wealthy man in england wrote a book on success in which he said that three qualities were a requisite namely judgment which could be acquired from small begin nings industry which could be acquired through habit and health which could be acquired by all who chose to take the trouble viscount bryce made a study by cataloging all the men who in the history of the world had achieved greatness and not ing what characteristics they had in common he found that every eminently-successful man possessed intellect energy cour age and independence to these should be added the quality of judgment without which no man has ever become great except only men of the inventive type such as poets authors and in ventors intellect without judgment has brought several men to near greatness but none has held for long the confidence and backing of others courage is the basis of self-confidence and therefore of the confidence of others but men having courage without inde pendence usually degenerate in to the type of a boss bully or tyrant they are leaders but they do not go forward and they keep their followers on the same level independence without judg ment makes an egoist while judgment without independence makes the temporarily-great man the greatest men in the world have been characteried es pecially by independence with judgment this is brought out especially by the characters of the six greatest men of all his tory as selected by h g wells outhor of the outline of his tory intellect is the power to think ; judgment is the power to think quantitatively ; courage is the ability to follow one's own inner convictions and independence is having standards of one's own in advance of the generality of ' mankind last friday night at 8.15 in the physics building the rail road society saw a remarkable film showing the victorian rail ways in australia in the 7,000 feet of film were many novel and educational scenes particu larly interesting to those inter ested in railroad engineering the meeting was very well attended and those who partici pated were well repaid and are indebted to dr richards for it was through his influence that it was possible to obtain the film after the meeting refresh ments were served and needless to say all hands enjoyed them selves in the last activity lehigh scored its first victory from lafayette in five years when the latter bowed to their old time rivals in the opening contest of the annual series by the score of 5-1 the game was played at march field before the student body of lafayette and a mere handful of lehigh rooters dußois started for the brown and white nine and easily held the heavy maroon batters at bay while his teammates proceeded to gather five rallies he made seven of the opponents carve the ozone trackmen to the score of 76-50 in this meet the lafay ette men excelled in the running events winning five out of the six first places fin the field events however they won but two out of six in the faculty tennis editorial staff selected for 1926 issue of yearly publication at a meeting of the sopho more class held in coppee hall last friday several issues of im portance were discussed main ly the report of mr clyde davis on the sophomore cotillion in which he stated that twelve fake tickets had been received at the door on the night of the function as there is some in formation at hand which might prove valuable to the cotillion in tripping up the perpetrators of such an act davis requested that there be an investigation under the auspices of the class but this was referred to the co tillion with the reply that the sophomore class was in back of their every move then the election of the edi torial staff of the 192g epi tome took place which re sulted in the following men being elected to the board e b ayres r h dalgleish j w maxwell g w pease and o f zurn 3rd these men will meet monday night to elect the editor-in-chief and assistant edi tor-in-chief the business staff composed of h t henke s l huyette and v c schwimmer which was picked by competi tion will also be present following this there was the nomination of officers for the coming year and then president stephens appointed the follow ing committee for the calculus cremation pakenham chair man rathbone shartle h rob inson bachman seaman and hoffman the meeting then ad journed '. last call for the freshman swim ; : ming test will be monday mny 19 ; in one of the closest meets ever staged on swarthmore ' field the brown and white trackmen lost to the garnet track athletes of swarthmore by the score of 8 to 50 very seldom is such keen interest in track and field events shown by a large number of specta tors as was shown saturday af ternoon and especially in the last few events in spite of the cold and dreary weather there seem ed to be something in the air that quickened the pulse of the spectators and stimulated the athletes onto greater efforts the result of this tenseness which increased in its effect as the meet progressed was that several of the races were run in close to record time and some excellent performances were turned in in the field events in the discus throw gisrael the tall freshman weight thrower not only garnered first place by a considerable margin but also broke the former lehigh record for this event by a distance of 1 feet for this feat this hus ky stalwart will receive a large l the first one earned thus far this season in track it is a rare occasion when a meet is as closely contested throughout its entirety as was saturday's contest the result of the meet hinged on the last two events the half mile and the javelin throw in fact even after swarthmore had won first and second places in the former 1 event,""the garnet had only a scant lead of five points and lehigh still had an outside | chance of winning the meet by winning first and second places in the ravelin but got|_aronson and wilcox hurled the spear a short distance farther than wil lis and yeager of lehigh could do soon after the start of the meet it became evident that the meet would be close the lehigh runners held a slight lead three times during the progress of the meet and the swarthmore ath letes held it a similar number of times and the score was tied at 18 points after four events had been completed the brown and white run ners placed first in four of the eight track events and the gar net won three of the six field events the pole vault resulting in triple tie for first place be i tween meyers of lehigh and martin and.cliff of swarth more the swarthmore runners had the advantage in second places garnering five out eight and a tie in the track and three out of six in the field events a quadruple tie for second place in the high jump resulting both teams having two men in this tie captain carol was high scorer for the brown and white plac ing first in both the century and the furlong in the former event he repeated his great work of the previous week when he broke the tape in ten seconds flat smith secvired eight points for his team when h nosed out norton of swarthmore in the high hurdles and finished a step behind unger of the garnet in the low obstacle race in addi tion to his premier performance in the discus gisriel placed third in the shotput thus getting six points for lehigh croll the di minutive flier scored in three races tying for second in the quarter mile run with rumble of swarthmore and placing third in both dashes nuckols scored continued on page 4 column t due to the inclemency of the weather there has been little progress in the faculty tennis tournament a few of the match es of the first round had been played before the rainy weather choose a very poor time to give their first blow-out many good speeches heard last saturday night at the hotel allen in allentown the entire freshman class enjoyed the most successful banquet of any of the four given this year the kick was rather taken out of getting to the banquet since the class of 26 did not see fit to go after the yearlings however the presence of such a large number of freshmen strengthened the spirit of all present at the feast immediately following a meet ing in coppee hall at noon sat urday the entire freshman class marched down to the le high valley station and em barked for allentown their walk from the station to the ho tel was uneventful and shortly the hotel lobby looked like the doings of an elks convention at the suggestion of a few most of the class spent the af ternoon at the theatre where the actors catered to the desires of the pleasure-seeking frosh after a few hours rest in various parts of the hotel the cry for food was sent up and the anxi ous crowd of frosh hastened into the long banquet room where their already livened spirits were kept up by the strains of harvey hardwick and his rambler's orchestra the room was very attractively dec orated with the class colors with the speakers table in the center backed by the mah jongg decorations from the spring room at each place was a program and menu and im mediately following the blessing by rev gateson the banquet room was the scene of action not unlike the new york stock exchange with the main object in view to get at least two hun dred autographs while this was going on the waitresses en deavored to get the food on the table the menu consisted of half grapefruit tomtato macedoine spring onions radishes roast stuffed young turkey potato filling cranberry sauce browned new potatoes creamed lima beans hearts of lettuce thousand island dressing french vanilla ice cream cake demi-tasse the meal was excellent and enjoyed by all but many could not figure out whether the food was to take one's mind off the music or the music to take one's mind off the food at nine j)'clock the orchestra retired ttnd a novelty trio entertained with piano saxaphone and ci gar-box violin solos and duets of popular songs bob harrier vice president of the class and toasunaster then had the frosh draw up their chairs and announced his regret that bill littell presi dent was unable to be present because of illness at this a mo tion was made that a telegram be sent to bill expressing their regrets at his absence and the hope for his return of the eight speakers schedul ed to talk five were present the others for good reasons neces freshman swim ; : ming test will be monday mny 19 ; in one of the closest meets ever staged on swarthmore ' field the brown and white trackmen lost to the garnet track athletes of swarthmore by the score of 8 to 50 very seldom is such keen interest in track and field events shown by a large number of specta tors as was shown saturday af ternoon and especially in the last few events in spite of the cold and dreary weather there seem ed to be something in the air that quickened the pulse of the spectators and stimulated the athletes onto greater efforts the result of this tenseness which increased in its effect as the meet progressed was that several of the races were run in close to record time and some excellent performances were turned in in the field events in the discus throw gisrael the tall freshman weight thrower not only garnered first place by a considerable margin but also broke the former lehigh record for this event by a distance of 1 feet for this feat this hus ky stalwart will receive a large l the first one earned thus far this season in track it is a rare occasion when a meet is as closely contested throughout its entirety as was saturday's contest the result of the meet hinged on the last two events the half mile and the javelin throw in fact even after swarthmore had won first and second places in the former 1 event,""the garnet had only a scant lead of five points and lehigh still had an outside | chance of winning the meet by winning first and second places in the ravelin but got|_aronson and wilcox hurled the spear a short distance farther than wil lis and yeager of lehigh could do soon after the start of the meet it became evident that the meet would be close the lehigh runners held a slight lead three times during the progress of the meet and the swarthmore ath letes held it a similar number of times and the score was tied at 18 points after four events had been completed the brown and white run ners placed first in four of the eight track events and the gar net won three of the six field events the pole vault resulting in triple tie for first place be i tween meyers of lehigh and martin and.cliff of swarth more the swarthmore runners had the advantage in second places garnering five out eight and a tie in the track and three out of six in the field events a quadruple tie for second place in the high jump resulting both teams having two men in this tie captain carol was high scorer for the brown and white plac ing first in both the century and the furlong in the former event he repeated his great work of the previous week when he broke the tape in ten seconds flat smith secvired eight points for his team when h nosed out norton of swarthmore in the high hurdles and finished a step behind unger of the garnet in the low obstacle race in addi tion to his premier performance in the discus gisriel placed third in the shotput thus getting six points for lehigh croll the di minutive flier scored in three races tying for second in the quarter mile run with rumble of swarthmore and placing third in both dashes nuckols scored continued on page 4 column t due to the inclemency of the weather there has been little progress in the faculty tennis tournament a few of the match es of the first round had been played before the rainy weather choose a very poor time to give their first blow-out many good speeches heard last saturday night at the hotel allen in allentown the entire freshman class enjoyed the most successful banquet of any of the four given this year the kick was rather taken out of getting to the banquet since the class of 26 did not see fit to go after the yearlings however the presence of such a large number of freshmen strengthened the spirit of all present at the feast immediately following a meet ing in coppee hall at noon sat urday the entire freshman class marched down to the le high valley station and em barked for allentown their walk from the station to the ho tel was uneventful and shortly the hotel lobby looked like the doings of an elks convention at the suggestion of a few most of the class spent the af ternoon at the theatre where the actors catered to the desires of the pleasure-seeking frosh after a few hours rest in various parts of the hotel the cry for food was sent up and the anxi ous crowd of frosh hastened into the long banquet room where their already livened spirits were kept up by the strains of harvey hardwick and his rambler's orchestra the room was very attractively dec orated with the class colors with the speakers table in the center backed by the mah jongg decorations from the spring room at each place was a program and menu and im mediately following the blessing by rev gateson the banquet room was the scene of action not unlike the new york stock exchange with the main object in view to get at least two hun dred autographs while this was going on the waitresses en deavored to get the food on the table the menu consisted of half grapefruit tomtato macedoine spring onions radishes roast stuffed young turkey potato filling cranberry sauce browned new potatoes creamed lima beans hearts of lettuce thousand island dressing french vanilla ice cream cake demi-tasse the meal was excellent and enjoyed by all but many could not figure out whether the food was to take one's mind off the music or the music to take one's mind off the food at nine j)'clock the orchestra retired ttnd a novelty trio entertained with piano saxaphone and ci gar-box violin solos and duets of popular songs bob harrier vice president of the class and toasunaster then had the frosh draw up their chairs and announced his regret that bill littell presi dent was unable to be present because of illness at this a mo tion was made that a telegram be sent to bill expressing their regrets at his absence and the hope for his return of the eight speakers schedul ed to talk five were present the others for good reasons neces
