rotc program shaping cadets for army camp american college students to live study and work with african stu dents and leaders at first 72 students were sent abroad to work at a nine-week work-camp seminar held in five countries this summer the plan will spon sor these programs in twenty coun tries meetings with political and gov ernmental leaders educators busi nessmen and village chiefs are an committee has now received pledges for the amount needed for the two representatives the class of 62 offered to bridge the gap if any extra money is necessary the committee is awaiting final approval professor of botany at the university of michigan will discuss the uniqueness of plants in the osbourne room tuesday at 8 p.m a native of england dr norman attended king edward's school and the university of birmingham where he received his bachelor of science and his doctorate in philosophy in plant-biochemistry prof norman came to the united states in 1930 as a rockefeller • fellow and attended the university of wisconsin where he continued his research in agricultural bac teriology he returned to england in 1933 and re ceived a doctor of science degree from the univer sity of london he was in charge of the biochemistry section of the rothamsted experimental station in herts england from 1933 to 1937 dr norman returned to the united states in 1937 to become professor of soils at iowa state university from 1943 to 1945 he was with the chemical corps of the army in washington and in 1946 be came division chief of the chemical corps biological see plant page 3 geologist loquim an acting committee to select a represen tative for a student exchange program with tougaloo southern christian college was established by arcadia wednesday organized to combat student apathy with southern negro problems the program is sponsored and financed by the national stu dent association according to the terms of the plan a le high student will spend six days et the jack son miss college while a tougaloo student in grace hall orchestra to perform sun the minneapolis symphony directed by stanislaw skrowaczewski will perform sunday at 2:15 p m in grace hall under the sponsorship of the committee on performing arts the concert will include the symphony number 35 in d major haffner symphony by wolfgang amadeus mozart six pieces for or chestra opus 6 by anton webern and symphony number one in f miner and opus 10 by dimitri shostakovich skrowaczewski considers these pieces a well balanced program he went on to explain that he prefers the classical-romantic music of shubert schumann and liszt . . . .. he feels that a well-balanced program must contain not only the great masterpieces of symphonic repertory in as wide a range as pos sible but that new works must also be introduced the concert is under the auspices of prof jonathan elkus chair man of the committee on performing arts and boris sokoloff general manager of the orchestra lighting and staging will be done by members cf the mustard . and cheese dramatics club the ushering will be done by the local chap ter of alpha phi omega national service fraternity persons arriving late will be seated only between march 10 freshmen will visit at least twelve houses on designated days if they wish to be considered when rushing begins following spring recess botanist to discuss uniqueness of plants michael i austrian 63 and william j wood 64 have been nominated by the crossroads africa committee for participation in the program this summer timothy b bird 64 was chosen as an alternate the committee — composed of preston parr associate dean of students dr glenn j christensen vice-president and provost roger blair 64 and thomas power 62 chairman — will forward the re commendations to the national crossroads africa committee for final approval we were amazed by the quality of the applicants power said and almost had to resort to flip ping a coin between four of them to make the final decision originally the committee had re ceived permission to send one delegate to the program but after receiving more than 20 qualified applicants power said we re quested an additional representa tive .
