aspects of world problems in the spring dr j stitt wilson who made such a profound im pression on the students last year will return for a series of six lectures on christian de mocracy sunday afternoon discussion groups have been conducted during march by pro fessors of the university on the subjects of world peace and later on comparative re ligions in a word the y m c a has rendered great and invaluable service to lehigh and has done much to create an interest in the things in college life which are really worth while toward the goal athletic policy discussed it's a far cry from an ancient latin comedy to a modern mu sical show but in somewhat the same way as a jazz song writer takes his theme from an old symphonic movement so has dr john r crawford profes sor of classics at lafayette col lege prepared one of ter rence's comedies for popular presentation by the lafayette latin players here march 26 27 and 28 pittiful parents which will be presented by the players on those dates was first presented on the campus two years ago by the same organization the lines of the three-act play are a very free translation by dr craw ford of one of terrence's com edies the translation em phasizes the similarity between the old roman life and that of today ent athletic policy for moi'e than behind closed doors the nine members of the joint commit tee on athletics discussed the pros and cons of lehigh's pres four hours in the arcadia room ' of drown hall last wednesday evening though no statement could be gotten it is known that the work is coming along with a size of the original committee head way is being made and committee less than a third the with two or three more meetings it is probable that definate con clusions will be reached last friday morning mr har rison w craver gave the fresh man a very interesting lecture on the use of libraries mr craver is librarian of the unit ad engineering societies lib rary and was well fitted to de liver his message on libraries after a very interesting intro duction by professor bradley stoughton mr craver began by explaining that books to an en gineer are an indispensable means of saving time in as much as one may be able to ob tain matter from a written lec ture just as well as if attending he lecture at which the author is there in person he then went on to explain that the engineer relies on books for the vast amount of his technical infor mation also that books teach expression and it is from them that much inspirational value to hie engineer as well as ideas hat may fill the gaps necessary for the completion of an inven tion are obtained as is often the case inventions are made before the world is ready for them and when the time comes that they may be completed the clues to the invention in ques tion are lost the clues how ever may be found in libraries of which the engineer unfortun ately does not avail himself furthermore it is to be re membered that the library is not a burial ground for history but that it is an up to date institu tion by taking advantage of this fact and systematizing his reading an engineer will be able to obtain great value from the library and at the same time keep his outlook from becoming too narrow mr craver then put stress on how to use the library to the best advantage giving the fol lowing three points as follows 1 find system of classfica tion 2 make use of index 3 make use of bibliographies thus one may start with the general subject and narrow his field as he progresses tn concluding mr craver stat ed that the societies library in new york city is available to all members the greater part of the work at the present being done by correspondence with men who are remote from good libraries this work is done largely by taking prints of the subject in question or making biblographies all engineers in terested would find it to their advantage to find out more about the above by prof fay bartlett teaching men to become thorough-bred sportsmen in all forms of indoor and outdoor re creation should be the aim of athletics self-expression is a big fac tor in a college physical educa tione pupils should be given the op portunity to create exercises and games to carry on a successful pro gram of physical education in college there should be mental good will between the instruc tors and pupils strength speed indurance sunday afternoon discussion groups have been conducted during march by pro fessors of the university on the subjects of world peace and later on comparative re ligions in a word the y m c a has rendered great and invaluable service to lehigh and has done much to create an interest in the things in college life which are really worth while toward the goal athletic policy discussed it's a far cry from an ancient latin comedy to a modern mu sical show but in somewhat the same way as a jazz song writer takes his theme from an old symphonic movement so has dr john r crawford profes sor of classics at lafayette col lege prepared one of ter rence's comedies for popular presentation by the lafayette latin players here march 26 27 and 28 pittiful parents which will be presented by the players on those dates was first presented on the campus two years ago by the same organization the lines of the three-act play are a very free translation by dr craw ford of one of terrence's com edies the translation em phasizes the similarity between the old roman life and that of today ent athletic policy for moi'e than behind closed doors the nine members of the joint commit tee on athletics discussed the pros and cons of lehigh's pres four hours in the arcadia room ' of drown hall last wednesday evening though no statement could be gotten it is known that the work is coming along with a size of the original committee head way is being made and committee less than a third the with two or three more meetings it is probable that definate con clusions will be reached last friday morning mr har rison w craver gave the fresh man a very interesting lecture on the use of libraries mr craver is librarian of the unit ad engineering societies lib rary and was well fitted to de liver his message on libraries after a very interesting intro duction by professor bradley stoughton mr craver began by explaining that books to an en gineer are an indispensable means of saving time in as much as one may be able to ob tain matter from a written lec ture just as well as if attending he lecture at which the author is there in person he then went on to explain that the engineer relies on books for the vast amount of his technical infor mation also that books teach expression and it is from them that much inspirational value to hie engineer as well as ideas hat may fill the gaps necessary for the completion of an inven tion are obtained as is often the case inventions are made before the world is ready for them and when the time comes that they may be completed the clues to the invention in ques tion are lost the clues how ever may be found in libraries of which the engineer unfortun ately does not avail himself furthermore it is to be re membered that the library is not a burial ground for history but that it is an up to date institu tion by taking advantage of this fact and systematizing his reading an engineer will be able to obtain great value from the library and at the same time keep his outlook from becoming too narrow mr craver then put stress on how to use the library to the best advantage giving the fol lowing three points as follows 1 find system of classfica tion 2 make use of index 3 make use of bibliographies thus one may start with the general subject and narrow his field as he progresses tn concluding mr craver stat ed that the societies library in new york city is available to all members the greater part of the work at the present being done by correspondence with men who are remote from good libraries this work is done largely by taking prints of the subject in question or making biblographies all engineers in terested would find it to their advantage to find out more about the above by prof fay bartlett teaching men to become thorough-bred sportsmen in all forms of indoor and outdoor re creation should be the aim of athletics self-expression is a big fac tor in a college physical educa tione pupils should be given the op portunity to create exercises and games to carry on a successful pro gram of physical education in college there should be mental good will between the instruc tors and pupils strength speed indurance university was given out yesterday from the dean's office these figures were obtained by averaging the weighted averages of the men in each group the letter grades were evaluated as follows a-5 b-3 c-2 and d-l because oi the rarity wtih which a's are given out they are awarded a bonus of a point which is statis tically justiable the general average of all students in college on this basis is 1.8 which corresponds to about 68 within each rank the arrangement is merely alphab etical the results with rank average and group or groups is as follows 1 2.7 leonard hall 3 2.2 tayor hall a town group
