extract from ohio state lan tern show some different ideas necessary in some cases the following article in de fence of cramming appeared in a recent issue of the ohio state lantern : the inquisitive and persist ent young reporter who works on wednesday's lantern staff selected five students at random yesterday and obtained their opinions on the advisability of cramming the night before a final four of the five decried the practice that seems so com mon among modern undergrad uates it may be that our reporter happened to query four of the few conscientious students who attend ohio state it may be that the students approached too considered that they were talking for publication and that their remarks an^ul be noted by their instructors what we're trying to say is that although students may loudly condemn cramming and assert that it does no good the fact remains that a considerable portion of the student body does stay up late at night dur ing finals week and reahy ac comphishes more academic work than at any other period during the quarter many things quite too num erous to mention tend to take students minds away from the primary aim of college attend ance that of acquiring a little 1 knowledge every quarter there are the usual activities and functions to distract students therefore slide along as best they can until the week of reck oning comes and then the thumbing of books and notes if any begins some students get through college by cramming while this procedure is not admirable nor productive of the best results for the students themselves it does cause some to receive a little somthing from their so journ at ohio state besides the thin veneer which causes them to be termed collegiate it would be fine and lovely if all students completed each day's work as soon as it was asei ned but they don't as in olh r walks of life many pro orastina+ors are found included in college enrollments these are the unhappy days of the pro crastinator.3 if they don't work at any other time during the quarter they do now perhaps they learn something we hope so tonight at 7.30 and tomorrow evening at the same time tay lor gymnasium will be the cen tre of much interest to the ath letic world when the tryouts of ihe middle atlantic district for v berth on the olympic wrest j ling team will be staged al ! though primarily serving as a i district olympic tryouts these i matches will determine the mid | tile atlantic championship in i each class the men who place i first and second in each class in 1 f.his meet will be eligible to en ter the national olympic try outs which are to be staged in the madison square garden i new york city later in the i year these tryouts ay ere award ed to lehigh because of the ex cellent wrestling equipment and facilities available at the south | mountain institution and be | cause of the keen interest shown jin this form of athletics at le high and the vicinity there have not been as manyi entries as were expected to date but it is almost certain that there will be a large number of contestants at taylor gymnasi um tonight and tomorrow night one of the entries that will prob ably be of the greatest interest to lehigh students will be ed die coxe former captain of the brown and white and 1923 champion in the 158-pound di vision there will be several en tries from the lehigh varsity matmen of the present season and some of the grapplers from the freshman team washburn and beck have definitely decid ed to enter the competition and it is believed that several of the other men have similar inten tions many other wrestlers of former collegiate fame are also entered outstanding among these are evans of perm state former 135-pound champion ; johnson former captain of co lumbia and also a former inter collegiate champion in the 158 pound class rabinowitz of the university of pennsylvania and lehman of perm state the referee will be grigg an ama tuer athletic union representa tive and former wrestling coach at perm y holds fourth forum sunday afternoon yale university benefits by will large number of candidates report including four veterans the tennis candidates have started indoor practice in camp coppee and taylor gymnasium and will continue their work in doors until the outdoor courts are hard enough and in condi tion for use forty-five men have answered the call up to date and from this large num ber excellent prospects for a good team are entertained there are four regulars left from last year's team and with these men as a nucleus around which to work a well balanced and aggressive team should be turned out the schedule has been changed slightly and a number of additions made to the list which was previously pub lished the schedule is as fol lows : april 12 philadelphia college of osteopathy april 23 gettysburg april 25 fordham away april 26 army away april 30 rutgers may 2 george washington may 3 f and m may 9 catholic univ away may 10 navy away may 14 princeton away may 16 brooklyn poly may 17 pennsylvania may 21 lafayette home may 23 new york univ may 24 lafayette away track season is now well un der way and those who have signed up are training for their events in earnest up to the present time 109 candidates have signified their intention of entering the competition for places on the track squad a number of men are neglecting daily practice and coach kan aly particularly urges these men to turn out more regular ly although there has been an excellent showing so far try outs have not as-yet taken place ana new men still have the op portunity of turning out more men for all events nave an ex cellent opportunity candidates and others who have any ability in the middle distances and field events are especially urged to uam lor these events the fact that the inter-class meet takes place friday after noon april 4th and saturday afternoon april sth before the baseball game is worthy of particular note since the first two men in each event will go to the dickinson meet which takes place april 12th at dick inson this leaves but a week of practice necessitating a regular attendance on the upper field to date but six men have re ported for the assistant man ager competition manager si l hauser urges that more men enter this competition this is an excellent chance for men who have done some little track work but feel that they have not the ability to compete for the squad to turnout as the competitors in this field have the opportunity to receive training in track work with the added possibil ity of becoming an assistant manager work has taken place every day in conditioning the track a five-ton steam roller has been engaged to roll the track thus insuring an excellent base so that work with the hand roller later on will keep the run-way in fine condition in addition to many veterans of one or more season's experi ence there are many new men who have shown considerable ability and form in the daily practice a few of these com-i peted on the indoor squad and are in good condition for the try-outs next week the change in the drill period from wednes day to tuesday is advantageous for the track squad since it will triable the runners to have two consecutive days of practice and one day of rest before the meets the snow storm of wednesday may retard practice for a day or two but it is expected that the warm weather will soon dry out the track sufficiently for use hotel bethlehem was scene of big freshman banquet last evening jimmy reed 27 was awarded the r a lewis wrest ling cup at a banquet given to the team by the donor of the cup at the hotel bethlehem lasj evening last month mr lewis gave the athletic committee a cup to be awarded to the most deserv ing member of the freshmen wrestling team though the manner of giving the cup in future years has not yet been fully decided it is probably that the winner's name will be placed on it and the cup be kept in the trophy room of the gymnasi um reed who wrestled in the 115-lb ber excellent prospects for a good team are entertained there are four regulars left from last year's team and with these men as a nucleus around which to work a well balanced and aggressive team should be turned out the schedule has been changed slightly and a number of additions made to the list which was previously pub lished the schedule is as fol lows : april 12 philadelphia college of osteopathy april 23 gettysburg april 25 fordham away april 26 army away april 30 rutgers may 2 george washington may 3 f and m may 9 catholic univ away may 10 navy away may 14 princeton away may 16 brooklyn poly may 17 pennsylvania may 21 lafayette home may 23 new york univ may 24 lafayette away track season is now well un der way and those who have signed up are training for their events in earnest up to the present time 109 candidates have signified their intention of entering the competition for places on the track squad a number of men are neglecting daily practice and coach kan aly particularly urges these men to turn out more regular ly although there has been an excellent showing so far try outs have not as-yet taken place ana new men still have the op portunity of turning out more men for all events nave an ex cellent opportunity candidates and others who have any ability in the middle distances and field events are especially urged to uam lor these events the fact that the inter-class meet takes place friday after noon april 4th and saturday afternoon april sth before the baseball game is worthy of particular note since the first two men in each event will go to the dickinson meet which takes place april 12th at dick inson this leaves but a week of practice necessitating a regular attendance on the upper field to date but six men have re ported for the assistant man ager competition manager si l hauser urges that more men enter this competition this is an excellent chance for men who have done some little track work but feel that they have not the ability to compete for the squad to turnout as the competitors in this field have the opportunity to receive training in track work with the added possibil ity of becoming an assistant manager work has taken place every day in conditioning the track a five-ton steam roller has been engaged to roll the track thus insuring an excellent base so that work with the hand roller later on will keep the run-way in fine condition in addition to many veterans of one or more season's experi ence there are many new men who have shown considerable ability and form in the daily practice a few of these com-i peted on the indoor squad and are in good condition for the try-outs next week the change in the drill period from wednes day to tuesday is advantageous for the track squad since it will triable the runners to have two consecutive days of practice and one day of rest before the meets the snow storm of wednesday may retard practice for a day or two but it is expected that the warm weather will soon dry out the track sufficiently for use hotel bethlehem was scene of big freshman banquet last evening jimmy reed 27 was awarded the r a lewis wrest ling cup at a banquet given to the team by the donor of the
