the standings resulting from thes meets are identical to those se cured in the meet on saturday the winners won four first places while the runners-up won three and the brown and white tankmen secured one first place when raleigh finished first in the 150-yard back stroke swarthmore failed to garner a first place there were several outstand ing stars of the meet foremost of these was welsh of johns hopkins who led in the individ ual scoring with ten points to his credit in securing these points he placed first in boub the 50 and 100 yard dashes in the century which was the hardest fought and closest race of the day welsh broke the former record of 58 seconds by three-fifths of a second in ac complishing this feat he was forced to defeat the former rec ord holder foster of rutgers which he did after one of th^j closest races ever staged in the new brunswick pool winning by an almost superhuman ef fort at the finish galbraith the rutgers captain earned six points for his team when he gave the most perfect exhibi tion of diving and thus remain ing as champion in this event besides the five points gained in the dive the scarlet leader >~ earned an additional point as a result of placing fourth in the 150-yard back stroke von stan ley also of rutgers retained his laurels in the plunge whent he touched the end of the 75 foot pool in both his trials while requiring less than the allotted time of one minute ballentine pool was the scene of much excitement in most of the sprints and the setting for many well-executed dives it was unfortunate for lehlgh that the relayers should be dis qualified because of beating the touch as the brown and white had a good lead up to that point the principal point scorers for lehigh were raleigh and trav is who succeeded in capturing first and second places in the 150 yard backstroke in the fancy diving astarita and childs had an off-day owing partly to the tenseness of the occasion and partly to the spring-board to which lehigh's men had difficulty in getting ac customed the 200-yard breast stroke was a popular meet for fast time but the best that le high put forth obtained third place summary 100-yard sprint won by welsh johns the chem ical society last thursday night dr frazer's subject was catal ysis and was delivered in the chemical lecture room before a very large audience dr frazer's mention of his war work proved very interest ing his work during the warj was to devise some means of protecting the army and navy gunners against the injurious effects of carbon-monoxide gas his protective measures of course would apply more par ticularly to the navy gunners due to the greater risk they in curred by being in poorly vent ilated gun turrets this was done by finding a catalyst that would change the carbon-monox ide gas to carbon-dioxide and then cause the latter gas to bei absorbed by lime or soda or any other absorbant for carbon-diox ide only after a great number of years was a practical method discovered professor frazer's talk on war work really consti tuted a small part of his lec ture the remainder pertaining to catalysis in a technical w r ay dr frazer illustrated his talk with experiments and described some of those he did during the war professor frazer is very well qualified to speak on this sub-j ject as he is an analist of note and has done research work that has won him international fame for over six years he was chief of research in the labora tory of the bureau of mines at pittsburgh nomination of officers for next year also took place and the following men were nomin | ated : for president h l sieg jmund j b austin t w i beggs e l kirchner for vice-president t h dudley r h geick for secretary : g a how land g h law g j jack son ' for treasurer m h cohen ■r h ewart the lehigh university wrest ling team closed a successful season by overwhelming the columbia team before a record crowd on saturday evening in taylor gymnasium the brown and white grapplers succeeded in getting three falls and twp referee decisions on time advan tage while the visitors were only able to score one fall making the final score stand 21-5 in lehigh's favor the visitors ex erted themselves to the last ounce of strength but they fail ed to subdue the ambitious hus kies of coach billy sheri dan's group it is intersting to note that on saturday the freshman and varsity teams together netted eight falls which is a commendable record for any college or university captain warriner fittingly closed his excellent wrestling career by throwing brennan the columbia entrant he was in rare form and altogether too aggressive for his opponent burke and levitz were also high scorers getting falls in a short wrestling period the heavy ! weight bout was quickly decid ed by levitz when he pinned aulich's shoulders to the mat in thirty-seven seconds rogers j and reynolds both won their | match by referee's decision on i time advantage rogers madaj his last appearance as a lehigh mat man and tried hard for z fall but was not successful porte the only scorer for col j umbia was able to throw wil \ liamson for a fall in the last for i ty-five seconds of the bout the j 125-lb bout was declared a draw by the referee since both men had nearly the same time advantage in the 115-lb class reynolds found barrencher a bit hard to get at but after 6 minutes of sparring he sent him to the mat and held him for a 40 second time advantage for this short period the lehigh representa tive had the upper hand but barrencher succeeded in regain ing his fet and again they spar j red for holds they remained on their feet for the balance of the time limit and after the gong sounded the referee awarded the bout to reynolds on a 40 second time advantage chiarello opposed best of le high in the 125-lb class the two remained on their feet for several minutes when both went to the mat chiarello held best j for 2 minutes 4 seconds after which the lehigh grappler re versed the tables and held hte opponent for 2 minutes 28 sec onds the bout was in best's favor but the referee gave the decision as a draw this was best's initial appearance on the floor this season as a lehigh mat man and he showed himself an aggressive grappler captain warriner found him self opposed by quite an elusive person but he was not clever enough for the lehigh doughty captain the lehigh leader gave an excellent exhibition in his last bout as a lehigh wrestler he was aggressive from the start and was continually push ing brennan finally with but 2 seconds to go the lehigh cap tain got a bar-chancery on his opponent and nicely placed him on his back for a fall warriner worked hard for a fall and in securing it it gave him a pleas ing climax to his wrestling ca reer at lehigh rogers put up one of his characteristic game fights in his 145-lb bout with edelman of columbia like warriner it was his last appearance as a repre sentative of the brown & white wrestling team and like the le j at a economical operation of locomo tive types subject of discussion 2 power forms compared last friday evening at eight o'clock the railroad society held one of its most successful nicets of the year in the lecture rpom of the physics building mr g m basford spoke on the conservation of locomotive fuel fuel saving devices and the relative merits of electric and steam locomotives were disf cussed mr basford is president of the g m basford company of new york is chief engineer of the firm of j t ryerson and fons and consulting engineer of the lima locomotive works pie is well know in this field with which he is intimately con nected the lecture was quite long and covered the field min utely the continual encroachments of the electric over the steam locomotives has been a subject of much controversy but the general conception seems to be that the electric are superior to ihose employing steam mr basford pointed out that under equal operating conditions and similar power and structural details the steam locomotives would not be overshadowed by the electric furthermore he cited instances to prove his as sertions electric locomotive are designed by the manufac turers without any restrictions being imposed on them hen an order is placed with a firm lor steam locomotives the line placing the order requires them to be made according to certain fixed specifications this allows no departures from standard practice and because of this few improvements are made if greater power is desired instead of attempting to secure greater efficiency the less ambitious method of simply ordering more locomotives is followed elec tric locomotives have been de signed with due regard for ac celeration and torque while these factors have received slight attention in the design of steam propelled locomotives astarita honored ; at a meeting of the letter men ; • of the swimming team held after i : the meet on saturday francis g i ; astarita 25 was elected captain • • for the 1925 hopkins who led in the individ ual scoring with ten points to his credit in securing these points he placed first in boub the 50 and 100 yard dashes in the century which was the hardest fought and closest race of the day welsh broke the former record of 58 seconds by three-fifths of a second in ac complishing this feat he was forced to defeat the former rec ord holder foster of rutgers which he did after one of th^j closest races ever staged in the new brunswick pool winning by an almost superhuman ef fort at the finish galbraith the rutgers captain earned six points for his team when he gave the most perfect exhibi tion of diving and thus remain ing as champion in this event besides the five points gained in the dive the scarlet leader >~ earned an additional point as a result of placing fourth in the 150-yard back stroke von stan ley also of rutgers retained his laurels in the plunge whent he touched the end of the 75 foot pool in both his trials while requiring less than the allotted time of one minute ballentine pool was the scene of much excitement in most of the sprints and the setting for many well-executed dives it was unfortunate for lehlgh that the relayers should be dis qualified because of beating the touch as the brown and white had a good lead up to that point the principal point scorers for lehigh were raleigh and trav is who succeeded in capturing first and second places in the 150 yard backstroke in the fancy diving astarita and childs had an off-day owing partly to the tenseness of the occasion and partly to the spring-board to which lehigh's men had difficulty in getting ac customed the 200-yard breast stroke was a popular meet for fast time but the best that le high put forth obtained third place summary 100-yard sprint won by welsh johns the chem ical society last thursday night dr frazer's subject was catal ysis and was delivered in the chemical lecture room before a very large audience dr frazer's mention of his war work proved very interest ing his work during the warj was to devise some means of protecting the army and navy gunners against the injurious effects of carbon-monoxide gas his protective measures of course would apply more par ticularly to the navy gunners due to the greater risk they in curred by being in poorly vent ilated gun turrets this was done by finding a catalyst that would change the carbon-monox ide gas to carbon-dioxide and then cause the latter gas to bei absorbed by lime or soda or any other absorbant for carbon-diox ide only after a great number of years was a practical method discovered professor frazer's talk on war work really consti tuted a small part of his lec ture the remainder pertaining to catalysis in a technical w r ay dr frazer illustrated his talk with experiments and described some of those he did during the war professor frazer is very well qualified to speak on this sub-j ject as he is an analist of note and has done research work that has won him international fame for over six years he was chief of research in the labora tory of the bureau of mines at pittsburgh nomination of officers for next year also took place and the following men were nomin | ated : lehigh university wrest ling team closed a successful season by overwhelming the columbia team before a record crowd on saturday evening in taylor gymnasium the brown and white grapplers succeeded in getting three falls and twp referee decisions on time advan tage while the visitors were only able to score one fall making the final score stand 21-5 in lehigh's favor the visitors ex erted themselves to the last ounce of strength but they fail ed to subdue the ambitious hus kies of coach billy sheri dan's group it is intersting to note that on saturday the freshman and varsity teams together netted eight falls which is a commendable record for any college or university captain warriner fittingly closed his excellent wrestling career by throwing brennan the columbia entrant he was in rare form and altogether too aggressive for his opponent burke and levitz were also high scorers getting falls in a short wrestling period the heavy ! weight bout was quickly decid ed by levitz when he pinned aulich's shoulders to the mat in thirty-seven seconds rogers j and reynolds both won their | match by referee's decision on i time advantage rogers madaj his last appearance as a lehigh mat man and tried hard for z fall but was not successful porte the only scorer for col j umbia was able to throw wil \ liamson for a fall in the last for i ty-five seconds of the bout the j 125-lb bout was declared a draw by the referee since both men had nearly the same time advantage in the 115-lb class reynolds found barrencher a bit hard to get at but after 6 minutes of sparring he sent him to the mat and held him for a 40 second time advantage for this short period the lehigh representa tive had the upper hand but barrencher succeeded in regain ing his fet and again they spar j red for holds they remained on their feet for the balance of the time limit and after the gong sounded the referee awarded the bout to reynolds on a 40 second time advantage chiarello opposed best of le high in the 125-lb class the two remained on their feet for several minutes when both went to the mat chiarello held best j for 2 minutes 4 seconds after which the lehigh grappler re versed the tables and held hte opponent for 2 minutes 28 sec onds the bout was in best's favor but the referee gave the decision as a draw this was best's initial appearance on the floor this season as a lehigh mat man and he showed himself an aggressive grappler captain warriner found him self opposed by quite an elusive person but he was not clever enough for the lehigh doughty captain the lehigh leader gave an excellent exhibition in his last bout as a lehigh wrestler he was aggressive from the start and was continually push ing brennan finally with but 2 seconds to go the lehigh cap tain got a bar-chancery on his opponent and nicely placed him on his back for a fall warriner worked hard for a fall and in securing it it gave him a pleas ing climax to his wrestling ca reer at lehigh rogers put up one of his characteristic game fights in his 145-lb bout with edelman of columbia like warriner it was his last appearance as a repre sentative of the brown & white wrestling team and like the le j at a economical operation of locomo tive types subject of discussion 2 power forms compared last friday evening at eight o'clock the railroad society held one of its most successful nicets of the year in the lecture rpom of the physics building mr g m basford spoke on the conservation of locomotive fuel fuel saving devices and the relative merits of electric and steam locomotives were disf cussed mr basford is president of the g m basford company of new york is chief engineer of the firm of j t ryerson and fons and consulting engineer of the lima locomotive works pie is well know in this field with which he is intimately con nected the lecture was quite long and covered the field min utely the continual encroachments of the electric over the steam locomotives has been a subject of much controversy but the general conception seems to be that the electric are superior to ihose employing steam mr basford pointed out that under equal operating conditions and similar power and structural details the steam locomotives would not be overshadowed by the electric furthermore he cited instances to prove his as sertions electric locomotive are designed by the manufac turers without any restrictions being imposed on them hen an order is placed with a firm lor steam locomotives the line placing the order requires them to be made according to certain fixed specifications this allows no departures from standard practice and because of this few improvements are made if greater power is desired instead of attempting to secure greater efficiency the less ambitious method of simply ordering more locomotives is followed elec tric locomotives have been de signed with due regard for ac celeration and torque while these factors have received slight attention in the design of steam propelled locomotives astarita honored ; at a meeting of the letter men ; • of the swimming team held after i : the meet on saturday francis g i ; astarita 25 was elected captain • • for the 1925
