rushing proposal gen eral rushing problems an in creased emphasis on intramural sports problems pertaining to new houses a more definite rushing agreement with the gryphon so ciety a revised ifc weekend and fraternity scholastics the necessary majority and was declared the victor moore two-term president of sigma chi narrowly won the vice president's spot from james g morgan 62 phi gamma delta downing sigma phi president was elected secretary on the sec ond ballot other nominees for the office were richard a straub 62 president of phi sigma kappa alan g rieper 62 pi kappa al pha and paul r hoefler 63 president of sigma phi epsilon greer won the treasurer's posi ronald d johnson 62 president of delta tau delta was named president of the interfraternity council last night in an election marked by three tie votes martin e moore 62 was elected vice-president robert f down ing 62 was named secretary and carl c greer 62 was selected treasurer the first ballot for president re sulted in a three-way tie between johnson william c parnell presi dent of alpha tau omega and greer president of beta theta pi on the second ballot parnell was eliminated johnson and greer remained deadlocked through the third and fourth ballots following the fourth vote each of the nominees deliv ered short impromptu speeches on the fifth vote johnson acquired seating for hp dance to follow cafe theme ronald d johnson . . . new ifc president final plans underway for oedipus a new seating arrangement has been planned for the 61 spring houseparty in the cafe 62 theme tables similar to those used for the pops concert will be available in addition to those skimpy 10 cent glasses of punch tickets are now being sold for quart-sized pitchers with pretzels at only 40 cents the quart pitcher-pretzel combination may also be bought at the dance for 50 cents cafe 62 downstairs grace hall will be decorated in true new orleans style giving a night club atmosphere for the performance of louis armstrong and his all stars upstairs grace hall is intended more for dancing and will have more room and no seats as an added incentive for the dancers to make a night of it at grace hall the houseparty queen will not be crowned until the stroke of midnight the queen will be selected in a manner similar to the miss rhein gold contest ten finalists will be chosen by the four class presidents their pictures will appear in the brown and white along with ....._. y m^>«k««<*^^j m :«*, a voting ballot from the four girls receiving the highest number of votes the chaperones and louis armstrong will pick the queen this will be the first time arm strong has appeared before lehigh audiences but an overwhelmingly warm reception is expected here houseparty weekend barrett davis will narrate the 52-minute production of particular note among the cast are george i shirley tenor who will sing the lead part of oedipus and lee cass who will play the part of creon and the messenger shirley recently was awarded the metropolitan opera auditions award and cass is the holder of two marian anderson awards adapted from sophocles play of the same name the opera-oratorio is divided into six episodes the bridge between each episode is effected by the nar rator h barrett davis who will explain the nature of each episode the play was adapted to an opera-oratoria by igor stravinsky and jean cocteau final rehearsals are now underway for the glee club's presentation of oedipus rex an opera-oratorio by stravinsky saturday at 8:15 p.m in the lower floor of grace hall the program which includes performances by noted soloists lee cass george shirley thomas paul and evelyn sachs and will feature a 42 piece orchestra will be presented through the sponsorship of the a n cleaver memorial fund performing with the outstanding lineup of solo ists and orchestral accompaniment will be the glee club and 12 memberes of the band robert cutler associate professor of the music department will conduct the musicians and prof h 381 freshmen received into fraternity ranks a total of 381 freshman pledges — 21 mere than last year — were re ceived into the ranks of the 30 s cir.l fraternities because of scholastic probation this year's drive for pledges be gan the first week of this semester with contacting which ran until march 24 a new system of alter nate days of rushing was used rushing and contacting was held from april 3 to april 12 with the exceptions of april 4 and 9 the student life committee is currently considering a proposal submitted by the interfraternity council which would advance the contactmg-rushing period several months and have rushing begin concurrent with the start of the spring semester secretary of af ok's rotc cut to 2-yr course ups the secretary of the air force has approved drastic changes for the air force rotc program which would include reducing afrotc to a two-year course given in the junior and senior years only and disestablishment of a number of uneconomical air force rotc units the recommended modifications in the afrotc program are de pendent upon enactment of con gressional legislation establishing an air force officer education program the proposals were presented in december to the afrotc advis ory panel membership of which includes representatives of a num ber of national educational organ iaztions and were approved by the secretary of the air force upon the recommendation of the advisory panel under these changes the com mander of the air university will see secretary page 6 to bid or not to bld frosh
