bethlehem pa^mo march i i 1961 vol 72 — no 32 drop nsa --— vianello solons table move frosh face new requirements lu business college to revise curriculum by tom tyson arcadian michael vianello 63 moved wednesday night that the student council withdraw from the united states national student association whose policies he charged tend toward the left and communism action on the motion has been postponed for what president michael moran called an indefi nite time vianello spoke for approxim ately 15 minutes in support of his motion he stated that the prime concern of nsa is with national political issues such as huac federal aid to education loyalty oath and rotc he said that there was so little interest shown in one of these rotc that a workshop concerned with it at a recent con vention was cancelled vianello stated nsa wishes to dictate opinion a majority of stu dents are not interested in telling the government what to do if stu dents were aware of what nsa is doing they would want to with draw there are other organiza tions that represent more stu dents vianello continued the con ventions are undemocratic he said he based his charges on re ports which he has 3 soviet scientists visit university beth steel three scientists from the u.s.s.r visited the campus today members of an official exchange tour sanctioned by the u.s de partment of state the trio inspected a turbo-blower for a blast furnace of bethlehem steel yesterday at the request of ingersoll-rand they also toured the campus this morning and attended a luncheon in the university center the group included vasili zvyagintev a steam turbine designer and department chief of a leningrad machine plant and alexei nikolae vich voerodine a metallurgist and head of the power department at a zapovoxhstal steel plant and vitali kucuk a reviewer for the state scientific and technical commission kuchuk acted as interpreter for the scientists the reciprocal tours begun in 1958 were extended last year to allow two ingersoll-rand personnel to inspect blast furnace blower installa tions in iron and steel plants in the u.s.s.r although the itinerary of the scientists was unavailable a rep resentative of the new york office of ingersoll-rand stated that the tour consisted of inspections of u.s steel plants at the phillipsburg i-r plant wednesday the scienitsts also viewed the manufacture of blast furnace blowers accompanying the russians were j f topping i r loss a j stepano and d r lowery mem bers of ingersoll-rand staff rush plan action seen monday interfraternity council's proposals to have fall semester contacting early spring semester rushing and a 1.5 minimum scholastic average will be acted on at its meeting on monday our house and a number of others that i know of are for these proposals said john mcgarry ifc president but what we are really looking for is unanimous approval from all the houses the proposals include six-week contacting beginning oct 30 nine day rushing beginning the first day of the spring semester followed immediately by pledging pledge classes may only visit their fraternities one night a week and on weekends see finals page 3 we're betting on a sellout gordon hoare sophomore class presi dent said late wednesday regarding the ticket sale for the closed circuit televising of the eiwa championship bouts next friday and saturday as of wednesday night when all but 10 living groups had bought their tickets and town and alumni groups were due to purchase their tickets the next day 550 tickets had been sold so far hoare said we have sold 100 per cent of tickets allocated to the living groups out of the total 700 tickets allo cated 550 were sold and the rest were expected to go to the groups who had not yet claimed them hoare also mentioned that if 400 extra orders were received and they were still coming in on wed nesday then there was a definite possibility that taylor gymnasium would be made available with a setup similar to that of grace hall upper floor the cost of these seats would be the same hoare said eiwa tv show ducats moving sellout seen there are two things that can be done he said either we can change nsa from within or with draw attempts have been made to do the former they have failed miserably vianello stated that there have been trends to withdraw out of 70 schools contacted 30 are withdrawing 20 are considering withdrawal and 20 are remaining members solon james rice 62 said that the policies of nsa are topics that should be of interest to every citizen of the united states he special program arranged with st luke's hospital anyone wishing to take advant age of the service can do so by fill ing out a request form available at st luke's un 6-0331 by vincent farace four controversial business col lege freshman courses — math 10 and 40 and eco 1 and 50 — will be discontinued after this semester announced dr carl e madden dean of the college of business administration in september all incoming busi ness freshmen will take math 11 and a new course math 6 in place cf math 10 and 40 eco 1 and 50 will be replaced by two new required freshmen busi ness courses eco 11 and 12 these curriculum changes were variations will accomplish this he added these are the first steps toward a general analysis and evaluation of the business curriculum which will continue over the next few years dr madden also announced that an advanced level course eco nomics of resource uses will be added to the roster of business courses it will be listed as op tional but required for economics majors math 6 will be given by the col lege of arts and science as a one semester course which will prob ably not have math 11 for a pre requisite it will cover finite var iations including permutations and combinations probability and the logic of propositions math 40 will be given for the last time during summer session ihis year entitled introduction to poli tico-economic thought eco 11 and 12 will survey the leading eco nomic and political thinkers of the past and present ranging from adam smith and karl marx to hayek and john galbraith it is planned that frequent stu dent essays will be a part of these two courses said dean madden announced at a recent faculty meeting even before i arrived here said dean madden there existed a general feeling among both faculty and students that eco 1 and 50 were unsuitable for the present requirements for a good business education it was also felt that the subject matter in math 10 and 40 should be presented in such a way as to give
