arnold j toynbee oxford scholar and historian-author will lec ture here tuesday feb 21 at 8 p.m in packard lab auditorium toynbee's lecture will be the outlook of the west in the sixties the lecture is the third in the current cooperative lecture series and will be presented with the co-sponsorship of the interfraternity council and the foreign policy association of the lehigh valley toynbee will be introduced by dr carey b joynt head of the de partment of international relations toynbee s professional experience includes an appointment to the political intelligence department of the british foreign office in 1918 the following year he attended the peace conference at paris from 1925 until his retirement in 1955 prof toynbee was director of studies in the royal institute of international affairs and re search professor of international history in the university of lon don since 1955 he has been pro fessor emeritus during the second world war he was director of the foreign re search and press service royal institute of international affairs professor toynbee is most noted for his a study of history in ten volumes his greatest contri bution to learning according to many scholars are his many writing in a survey of inter national affairs from 1920 to 1938 joynt lectures on arms race friday in center the problems and promises of the arms race will be the sub ject of dr carey b joynt's lec ture friday feb 17 at 8 p.m in the osbourne room of the uni versity center this will be the third and final presentation this year of the senior lecture series dr joynt head of the depart ment of international relations will explain recent theories on arms races and apply these to our present arms race he will then conduct an informal discussion see dogmatic page 6 in discussing the future of army rotc col butch said that at this time the army program will not undergo any changes other than the alteration to the voluntary program changes in the future he said may come after a year has passed and the number of basic cadets has been determined the standards for acceptance into the basic pro grams will be the same in regard to physical require ments and college acceptance but a more extensive screening procedure may be forthcoming in order to enable more basic cadets to qualify for advanced training later this would include a more rigorous medical examination the chance of a volunteer get ting into advanced rotc will vary with the number who take up the basic program but generally speaking said col butch the smaller numbers in both groups will make selection easier and the match from the eastern intercolle giate athletic assn the dean's of fiice and from the athletic de partment gorden hoare 63 sophomore class president told the brown and white that despite contingencies in the approval given the class by the university the tv operation would definitely be run under the plan the meet will be televised on the upper floor of grace hall approximately 1,400 seats will be provided a large movie-type screen will be used as plans now stand wlrn staff members will provide commentary to accompany the video program this will be apart from the regu lar radio broadcast two cameras will be used to televise the tournament one from the balcony on the lower floor of grace hall where the match is by jeff stives the possibility of an entirely new and revised rotc program within three to five years was the outlook of the departments of military and air sci ence here last week interviews with lt col edmond r butch pro fessor of military science and tactics
