board will meet friday pulitzer-prize-winning novelist james a michener will speak at a luncheon meeting tomorrow of the young democraitc and students for kennedy and johnson clubs in the university center michener who won the pulitzer price in 1947 for tales of the south pacific is chairman of the bucks county democratic committee and frequently speaks to various groups throughout the country about the democratic party and its candidates his current book hawaii has been on the new york times best seller list for 45 weeks it is presently the biggest seller in the nation born in new york he was graduated summa cum laude from swarthmore in 1929 and received his m.a from colorado state in 1936 the novelist has done advanced research at the university of penn sylvania university of virginia *. ohio state harvard and the uni versity of st andrew's scotland he taught at colorado state and was a visiting professor at har vard in 1940 a member of phi beta kappa he has written unit in the social studies the fires of spring return to paradise and was editor of the future of social studies a publication of the na tional education association tomorrow's luncheon meeting see michener page 3 ? the appointment of a commit tee to fiad a new president and the disposition of the eugene g grace mansion are among the items which will possibly be acted upon when the university board of trustees meets this friday in addition to the regular busi ness of the trustees university sources indicate that the board will most likely consider these items plus hear the reports of the planning and development com mittee headed by e a curtis it is expected that the naming of the educator to succeed the late dr m d whitaker will not be made this semester and if the appointment follows the pattern of the late president's selection will probably not be made this year several years passed while the university was without a presi dent before dr whitaker was named dr harvey a neville vice president and provost said in july that the trustees would probably decide friday whether or not to accept the mansion under the terms of grace's will the university is left the mansion at 12th and prospect ayes pro vided that within six months from probate date lehigh signifies in writing that it will not sell the property to anyone except the bethlehem steel co gift committee is set up a committee of class of 61 volunteers is being set up to or ganize the class memorial gift campaign interested seniors may pick up applications at the student activi ties desk today through saturday shall we dance — sophomore john milton 80 seems to be tripping the light fantastic with colgate center chuck dalton during saturday's game actually milton just latched on to the ball see story page 8 the junior class guardians of freshmen — otherwise known af cyanide — loosened their vise-like grip the other day not that they wanted to of course for they made rather definite statements that 1 freshmen must wear dinks and 2 cyaride will see to it that they do in accordance with this policy the men of cyanide made a spot dink check last week they nabbed 25 dinkless who were instructed to gather at the university center at 7 a.m last friday and sing le high songs as far as can be determined the frosh were there but cyanide was not saturday the brown and white received from james rice cyanide president this note to 25 dinkless freshmen this past friday you appeared at 7 a.m in front of the university center for a song-fest as instructed when caught bareheaded at the wednesday dink check i realize your immense disappointment when no cyanide mem ber was present to lead this early morning concert the fault was entirely our own we got our signals crossed please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience tuesday oct 4 1960 no 4 when freshmen male and female get together there's usually no telling what might happen particularly if there are upperclass birdoggers lurking con veniently nearby saturday's dink hop according to several comments was suc cessful notwithstanding the usual loss of dates to car-driving and fraternity be ? ? of hawaii fame y-dems to hear james michener at dawn song-fest cyanide forgets date leaves frosh waiting allocation of 22,200 to 13 camp us activities by the student ac tivities committee was announced today by associate dean preston parr chairman sac members appropriated the allotment — 1,900 more than last year — to the following activities brown and white 6,800 wlrn 1,800 band 2,650 glee club 2,800 debate dot 700 mustard and cheese 2,800 arcadia 2,000 interfaith council 100 class of 1961 250 class of 1962 250 class of 1963 250 class of 1964 100 university center program . 300 an additional sum of 1,400 was appropriated for the committee's emergency roving fund the increased functions of ar cadia have brought an increase of 1,250 for the student council's appropriation this year delta omicron theta was orig inally scheduled to receive 1,600 but officers of the debate honorary informed the committee last week that it had a larger balance than anticipated and consequently did not need the full allotment the extra 900 was then placed in the roving fund an increase of 300 was allotted to the university center program which provides funds for groups otherwise unable to find a sponsor mustard and cheese received an use of leonard park solves housing crush due to a significant increase of resident freshmen students the university has been compelled to cope with a serious housing prob lem said associate dean c b campbell this challenge has been met with the continued use of park house as a freshmen residence hall and the addition of five non theological students to leonard hall as plans stand now leonard hall will serve in this capacity for one year only its future use will see graduate page 6 ?
