estimated at 150 is approximately 100 soon after the landing a replace ment propellor was borrowed and skis were mounted in place of tires with the aid of a tow the plane was able to take off and land at a near by airport six fraternities registered signi ficant increases while two others suffered sharp declines last semes ter according to dean j d leith's fourth normal span report issued late last week chi psi kappa sigma lambda chi alpha phi delta theta phi gamma delta and sigma alpha mv all exper ienced extraordinary gains in the dean's ratings while alpha sigma phi and delta sigma phi dropped considerably the normal span reports issued after each semester by leith mea sure the cumulative scholastic rat ing of each of lehigh's 30 frater nities over the past seven semesters the normal span and compare the houses on a quantitative basis the latest report covers the period from fall 1956 through fall 1959 chi psi and sigma alpha mv were the only two houses to move music sec retary of interior guest speaker for the first class of 63 banquet in the osbourne room of the uni versity center friday i am neither a polyanna nor a pessimist with regard to may i have your attention tom gilhool and robert wal ters 60 during yesterday's rally to protest racial discrimination against negro college students the rally netted sufficient funds for telegrams of protest to the governors of six states 6 houses up 2 down in 4th normal span list skyrms payne win 75 prize segregation protests were raised yesterday by more than 300 stu dents rallying on the library steps the students sympathized with non-violent demonstrations of fel low students in the south the civil rights rally ended with the sending of telegrams protesting integration violence to governors of six southern states — alabama florida ten nessee south carolina north carolina and virginia the lehigh protest was preci pitated by a violent four hour outbreak in nashville term last saturday the fist swinging out burst led to the arrest of 81 per sons 76 of them negro starting as sit-ins the negroes occupied chairs at a lunch counter where they were refused service in a passive resistance move violence ensued as whites jeered the colored students getting no response they kicked and beat the negroes until police arrived and made arrests pleading for fair treatment of the demonstrators the tele grams called for immediate progress toward racial equality students were asked to individ ually sign the petitions for tele grams with each student contribut ing 10 cents to pay for the mes sages
