miller freshmen lanin at spring hp professor emeritus lawrence h gipson president of the confer ence on british studies will speak on colonies ripe for revolt next friday at 8 p.m in the osbourne room of the university center gipson s talk will be the second in the senior lecture series under the co-sponsorship of omicron delta kappa senior honorary and the senior class the lecture series provides an opportunity for eminent lehigh professors to address the com munity gipson who for 22 years headed the department of history and gov ernment before his retirement in see gipson page 5 valenzuela informed the bethlehem police of the letter on their advice he notified the philadelphia officet of the fbi contents of the letter the post mark and the date of mailing were not revealed by investigating au thorities the bethlehem glober times on tuesday reported that the letter was signed mr x the spanish professor's wife re ceived the letter at 11:30 a.m on monday she notified her hus band who discussed the matter with barthold valenzuela notified the local police while barthold called the fbi in philadelphia who turned the case over to the allen town office valenzuela was unable to of fer any reason for a threaten ing letter although his back ground may provide a number of leads for investigators he served with allied counter intelligence during world war 11 working in italy and north africa valenzuela speaks fluent italian among other languages and posed as an italian for a time attempting to learn axis secrets he worked behind the lines rescuing downed allied airmen and cutting garman barbed wire to aid advancing troops a native chilean he served in the chilean submarine corps before joining the u s army he left the chilean navy after it had become see prof's page 5 the vocal arrangements of the four freshmen the traditional swing of the glenn miller orches tra and the sophisticated tempo of the lester lanin band will be fea tured at the friday night formal of the biggest houseparty ever april 22 the junior class announced that the three groups had signed for a total of 4580 1000 more than has ever been spent on a spring houseparty dance the four freshmen will give two 30-minute performances in the lower floor of grace hall while the shades of hyde park soph excites freedom rally bands are taking their breaks the group began singing together in 1948 were discovered by stan kenton and soon were stars of capital records featuring a un ique style they have made such hits as day by day and grad uation day the members ross and don bar bour ken albers and bob flani gan are all accomplished musicians and provide their own accompani ment in 1957 they were rated the top vocal group in the country by billboard united press and playboy magazine the glenn miller orchestra under the direction of ray mc kinley will play traditional miller favorites on the lower floor of grace hall ray mc kinley drummer in the orig inal miller band took over its leadership after the tragic death of miller himself in world war h the lester lanin band featured see spring page 11 msa evaluation team arrives sun for check campus orator — jonathan greene 62 con fronts an impromptu gathering of curious lehigh men on the university library steps with his concets of liberty and the problems it involves aroused by the narrow ideas expressed in a letter from a lehigh alumnus to the brown and white sophomore jonathan greene attacked some narrow-minded men who support lehigh financially in a speech before some 50 students on the library steps wednesday afternoon greene's speech announced earlier in the day by his posters throughout the campus at tracted a curious crowd which varied in size during the half-hour public discussion and reached a peak of 60 viewers most of those present were more curious than angry although greene was vehement about certain injustices despite heckling from the crowd greene in sisted that lehigh must find a solution to the dilemma which faces it although he spoke in general terms of freedom and liberty he admitted when confronted that he was particularly angry about the denial of a public speech to socialist leader norman thomas the speech although somewhat disorganized marked the first time in several years that a student has organized an impromptu meeting of such a na ture provocation for the speech was according to greene the letter to the brown and white on tues day from james gorman 10 insisting that thomas be banned from the lehigh campus as an unsuit able speaker for lehigh students to hear i don't attack the lehigh administration in any way he insisted but i do attack the disgraceful accusations about thomas billing the meeting alternately as a rally for freedom and a meeting of free men who want to see crowd page 9 the 23-man evaluation team of the middle states association of colleges and secondary schools is scheduled to arrive on campus sun day feb 4 the team will be here until wednesday feb 17 to examine lehigh for reaccreditation in the m.s.a the evaluators who will be housed at the hotel bethlehem dur ing their visit will be the guests of president martin d whitaker at a reception and dinner sunday af ternoon and evening the itinerary of the evaluators is not known remarked dean wray h congdon executive chair man of the evaluation planning com mittee they will be on their own and may turn up anywhere many instructors are of the same opinion as congdon having hinted to their classes that there is a pos sibility an m.s.a evaluator will be present in classes next than 18,000 miles acting in approx imately 80 cities from coast to coast following this evening's perform ance miss cornell and aherne will stay overnight in bethlehem then travel to atlanta georgia for a feb 15th performance a six-week run at new york city's billy rose theatre will begin march 17th followed by another tour and plans for the 1961 season the team of cornell and aherne first
