overall this reviewer was left un impressed by the compositions pre sented in the combined numbers the parts at times seemed vir tually divorced also the fre quent contrast between high and low passages and between musical agitation and serenity drew the listener's attention to the contrasts themselves rather than subtly creating a mood the hi j man sonata for violoncel lo and piano however notably em ployed an easily recognizable theme which compensated for these con trasts and left the listener with editor's note : this is the first atmmq.-£iaries on the other sule in the current rotc question the stated defense dept policy appears to be in conflict with recently-stated army and air force decisions the army in a statement last month from chief of staff gen l l lemnitzer said it favored retaining required ro tc in universities throughout the country air force authorities in a meet ing at maxwell air force base ala bama over the past month has told college administrators that pressures than need be norman thomas asserted sunday in a telephone interview on his c ontroversial position the 75-year-old socialist maintains there are many pressure groups producing a fear ob explained he learned of the controversy only by private letters and newspaper clippings sent me by interested parties throughout the country admitting permission had been denied for him to speak at three other schools wooster blooms burg state teachers and illinois normal during his long career thomas insists this is the first time there has been a cancellation without some expla nation the other three presidents were very frank in admitting that outside pressures brought about the cancellation of a lecture possibility in two of these cases the institutions presented him the nominal fee generally given to their speak ers he also noted that since that time two of thesa institutions have undergone structural changes such that a cancellat on would not occur he called these changes for made at a meeting of the cabinet thursday night represents an attempt to increase the student attend ance at the dance also representing the desire to increase attendance at the dance was the announcement of a 1,500 increment in the budget for house party bands the names of the bands have not been released as the final contracts have not been signed reasons cited by cabinet members for breaking the tra dition for formal dress include the cost incurred by many stu dents for renting a tuxedo and the difficulty had by many dates in carrying their dresses when traveling a third rea son university profes sors chapter disclosed this week that the aaup executive committee had met and was working on a reply but would not make it public if thomas wants to release it that's his business dilworth ad ded at the same meeting the resig nation of prof roy eckardt was accepted eckardt was president of the organization but resigned fol lowing release of an aaup state ment on the thomas affair on dec 15 the statement first from the faculty in many years to publicly question administration policy — asked for a revision in procedures regarding approval of guest speak ers although no new president has been elected committee members told the brown and white that a nominating com mittee would present its recom mendations in the near future reliable sources indicated that prof peter havas currently vice-president was the most probable future president bethlehem steel company spokes men declined any comment this week on the accusation leveled by thomas that the steel company has student news paper the chronicle is again pub lishing on its normal three-times weekly schedule following a two week suspension of the paper by the college's administration last month because of an acutely ob scene and offensively sacrilegious column we regard the publication of the column and the subse quent controversy as unfortu nate incidents marian sapp current editor of the chronicle told the brown and white in a telephone interview sunday the column miss sapp re ferred to has become the most controversial piece of college jour nalism published this year it was written by chronicle columnist steve cohen and appeared in the december 2 issue of the duke paper under the title of a christ mas story following the appearance of the christmas story all available copies of the paper were impound ed and destroyed reportedly in a bonfire the editor frederick an drews was removed from his po sition author cohen was re moved and forbidden to write for any duke publication in the future and publication of the chronicle was suspended by the college's executive committee for an in definite period publication of the chron icle was finally renewed on de cember 14 under the aegis
