noting that the maintenance of ... academic freedom requires sometimes that the academy itself live dangerously eight faculty members today publicly questioned the administration policy which re cently denied norman thomas permission to speak on the campus although they do not directly refer to the thomas incident the eight state they have been more than a little disturbed over the recent decision with regard to a certain controversial public figure and the effects of that decision all members of the executive committee of the lehigh chapter of the american association of university professors they indicate that they are fully aware that the president because of his admin istrative position cannot make decisions purely on intellectual consid erations however they insist that the ideal of academic freedom — or something close enough for that comfort of the live mind that might more properly be called a nourish ing agitation — is attainable as a solution to the problem the eight professors suggest that re sponsibility for approving speakers coming to the lehigh campus be transferred from the president to representatives of the faculty or student body so that all might share the responsibility that is so profoundly theirs the conduct of a free though passionate intellectual life at lehigh veteran campus observers noted that the statement is un precedented in that it repre sents a public questioning of an administration decision on the part of the faculty the eight men all respected fac ulty members emphasize that the statement reflects the beliefs of neither their departments nor the aaup but is rather an individual statement of conscience signing the proclamation were peter havas professor of physics ernest dilworth assistant professor of english saul barber assistant professor of biology robert bream associate professor of education eli schwartz associate professor of finance robert taylor associate librarian victor valenzuela as sistant professor of spanish and eugene vasilew assistant professor of speech the action on the part of the professors follows a series of see 8 page 9 arcadia associates are expected to collect enough additional ballots before the end of the week to en able the solons to have a valid vote on the question of whether their revised constitution will be adopted in addition to opening voting at the uc student activities of fice the associates will canvass members of living groups to obtain an additional 250 votes before the friday deadline the added ballots will provide the necessary fifty per cent vote of the student body required for constitutional amendments fol lowing completion of the vote bal lots will be counted to determine if the required 2/3's plurality has been obtained to pass the code with 41.4 per cent of the stu dent body voting the revision had a slim plurality of only five votes michael kobran 60 president of the associates expressed confidence that the new constitution would pass as of yesterday little voting had been conducted by the associates a very small group of students had voted but no significant trend was noted see greeks page 8 by bruce snyder had any member of the audience at last friday's woodwind chamber concert feared that the cultural climate of lehigh university was arid his fears would soon have been allayed the woodwind en sembles gave polished professional performances of assorted works by bach haydn mobart handel beethoven and kraehenbuehl the concert was marked throughout with a high degree of technical skill and artistic interpretation the woodwind trio with john heiss flute grant anderson clarinet and sterling levie oboe opened the concert with two sravottes by bach the members of the trio immediately showed their skill by performing in a musical style sparkling with gaiety and wit appropriately in another fast-paced number they held the audience's inter est with the allegro from trio no 1 by haydn the third selection adagio by mozart gave the performers an oppor tunity to exhibit their fine blending of tone in this slow piece there was not a single instance when the tonal quality of the trio lacked even pitch the trio ended with the alleg ro by lotti heiss again performed more than capably adding musical fire to an artistically animated group ander son exhibited perhaps the finest tone there was a sustained mel lowness in his playing that is strike delays instep plan see indian page 4 although the marathon steel strike has stalled the indian steel engineers program at lehigh for at least this semester instep ad viser george smith says the pro gram has not been canceled the ford foundation-spon sored program was postponed last september because of the strike smith at that time be lieved the program signed by each enter ing man acknowledging that he understand s the frater nity's position and intend s to uphold it if pledged and in nitiaied local sigma nu president james diclerico 61 explained that the lehigh chapter has had very little trouble since there are very few negroes admitted to lehigh he did not mention other restrictions except to say that there have been a few cases where the broth ers were interested in possibly pledging a boy but decided not to go ahead diclerico stated he did not feel there should be a clause and he felt all fraternities will be hit by discriminatory clauses eventually while asserting that he was not really qualified to com ment as he is the chapter's newly elected president di clerico affirmed the view that the national might eventually be in
