tuesday afternoon frank c walters of bethlehem wan elected captain of next year's tetlm walters has been one of the most consistent players on the lehigh team not having missed a game in the three years he has played he has been an integral part of the foncard line either at outside right or in side left walters prepared for he high at the bethlehem high school and is taking the naval engineering course tomorrow evening the lehigh basket ball team will entertain the villanova quintet at eight o'clock in taylor gymnasium this little college has appeared on lehigh's schedule before even though it did not have a place on the basketball schedule of last year the line-up will be virtually the same as that of the pre\ious two games which has proven its effectiveness especially on the defense the team under coach baldwin assisted by cap tain buddy lingle have spent the past week correcting the few glaring faults that were appar ent in the stevens game the men have put in a strenuous week practicing dropping the ball in the net from all angles considerable improvement is ex pected to be seen and a high score expected the college will be able to witness the next five games which are to be played on the home court not much is known about the quintet which will be sent up by villanova this little team ha won its first two games by im pressive scores and they hay a reputation of turning out a team capable of giving any col lege a stiff fight the scores by , avhich lehigh beat them by i»-i fair years previous have been close ! lehigh will send captain lingle and in all probability smith in the forward positions both of these men have shown that they know the game and have been playing well cap tain lingle is depended upon for his leadership and foul shooting while his running mate has a habit of dropping in quite a few goals from the field much to the dislike and annoyance of the visiting team the pivot position will doubtless go to gallagher the lanky boy who usually gets the ball directly from the referee for guards there is two men springsteen and wein stin the former is playing a mighty good game this season while the latter is nearly phenomenal almost playing a combination of guard and for ward positions matmen to try for team positions tomorrow the lehigh swim ming team will journey to pro vidence where they will meet brown university in their first meet of the year , brown who won the now england intercollegiate champ ionship last year has another powerful team this year and will force the lehigh mermen to the utmost it will be remembered that last year brown decisively defeated rutgers the champ ions of the eastern intercollegi ate swimming association of which lehigh is a member in davy jones brown has one of the best sprint men in college ranks jones is intercollegiate 100 yard champion being credit ed with 54.4 seconds for the cen tury dash and 24.2 seconds for the 50 the lehigh team will enter the meet in a crippled condition being without the services of captain harmon leh i g h's swimming ace and having been unable to practice but three days since the holidays due to the lack of lights in the gym and the coldness of the water in the pool harmon has not returned to school since the holidays being corifhted to his home with a very severe cold the failure of harmon to swim will neces sitate some radical changes in the make-up of the team but coach mahoney will start a team which can be relied upon to give a good account of itself even though weakened by the switching of men to the events in which they are unaccus tomed manager york announced that the probable line-up for the meet would be as follows relay raleigh estevez freeman and travis 50-yard travis and read 100-yards raleigh and es tevez 220-yards travis and par sons back-stroke raleigh and richards breast-stroke loo ami dykes dive astarita and childs herbie phyfe informed us that he was seriously thinking of transferring to leland-stanford it is hoped that he will not leave us so soon but if there is an at traction let him go he intends to hike across to frisco this summer tau beta pi tries to secure marks inter-collegiate soccer league meets fencing is the latest sport to be taken up at lehigh although not officially recognized as a minor sport considerable inter est has been shown regular classes have been formed and tournements are to be held the winner of which will be award ed a cup the classes are being instructed by charles h behre jr and for those who have very little or no knowledge of this sport he has undertaken to write a description of fencing three forms of sport are car ried on with swords they are called after the type of sword employed duelling sword con tests broadsword contests and fencing each has its own set of rules all are more commonly practiced in europe than in amei'ica but here in the united states there are several prominent fencing academies notably in the larger cities and there are at least two greater intercollegiate leag ues — the conference consisting of the big nine universities of the middle west and the intercolle giate fencing association with yale pennsylvania west point annapolis and several other large eastern universities as members broadswords or sabers are shaded like the modern army sword but the blades are not sharpened and the points at the meeting of the tan beta pi honorary fraternity held last monday evening the mem bers decided after due delibera tion as being in favor of a plan by which the marks of the sep arate living groups might be posted at the end of each sem ester this would determine the scholastic standing of the re spective fraternities and living groups connected with the uni versity such an arrangement would undoubtely furnish much incentive to the individuals in the living groups and greatly im prove the scholastic standing of the student body as a whole the society has placed this proposal as a suggestion before dean mcconn and any action favorable or unfavorable to the plan depends on his decision notice prof john l stewart well known by all lehigh students recently presented to the lehigh university library a number of books prof stewart's gener ous gift includes about two hun dred volumes on subjects of ec onomics history and biograph ies in addition to prof stewart's present various other volumes cf interest have been received lately among the more recent additions is a book entitled the lighter cf flames written by the famous movie actor william s hart and presented to the li brary with the compliments of the author volumes mainly de voted to scientific topics com plete the accessions received thus far in january captains and managers meet to plan next year's program the inter-collegiate associa i football league will hold nnual meeting in new york this saturday the meeting lainly for the purpose of ring up the schedule of ac games for the coming . composed of sijc of the lgest college soccer teams tie east the league is the ing organization of its kind as formed in 1904 and now sists of teams representing yard yale princeton cor nell university of pennsylvania and haverford lehigh is not a member of the league but com petes annually with two of the members perm and haverford in the regular schedule of the pennsylvania state league the i members of the league will be represented at the coming meet ing by a three-man delegation from each institution the newly elected manager the retiring manager and the captain serv ing as delegates tuesday afternoon every man in the dormitories was required to report to the assembly room in packer hall to hear dean mc conn's views on hazing doctor emery first gave a short talk en the financial status of the commons he stated that the commons had lost 500 from the opening of college to the first of december and that if more men did not patronize this col lege institution within the next three months it would have to be closed then the dean spoke on haz ing he said that probably most of the students present did not agree with his views on hazing but that he wished to state them and to try and have the men present see his side of the case first dean mcconn gave a short resume of the history of hazing in the larger universities hazing is an old institution dat ing from a hundred years or more back and fifty years ago it was universal colleges were then on the level of the present day prep schools however in the life of the students and in the grade of the subjects taught hazing was then suited to stu dents according to the dean but as education developed and new institutions with men at tending them instead of boys grew up there came a drop in the custom of hazing the dean stated that it was now practical ly obsolete in the leading uni versities of the country but still survives in the second rate col leges the change began twen ty years ago in some college the students were willing to let it go by the board and in others it came as the action of the fa culty lehigh has always been in line with the other education al institutions and has had a fa culty ruling against hazing for some years according to the dean there is now no hazing outside the dormitories he does not consider fraternity initia tions as hazing the penalties of the sophomore council are not affected by the rule al though the dean characterized them as prep school stuff dean mcconn then said that he knew that hazing was going on in the dormitories and that since it was an accessible situa tion he intended to act to pre vent it he then drew a picture of life in the dormitories as he drew it before a faculty meeting the day previously according to the dean this life has for its regular feature dumping pad dling and holding tea parties for the freshmen dumping is a slightly dangerous performance the dean said and then stated that nobody had ever been hurt as a result of it in the history of j lehigh as to paddling it is not j serious in itself but the tea | parties have had some disgust ing qualities the argument that is usually brought forth in regard to haz ing is that it takes down the conceit of freshmen who come to college cocky and proud from being seniors at prep school the dean said that he was haz ed and it didn't do him any good then he was in charge of haz ing and it didn't do the fresh men any good the dean's argu ment is that if a freshman knows that he is good paddling will not make him forget it leave that to the faculty was i the dean's solution of the prob | lem he then place on the varsity when they try for the various positions on the team this afternoon in taylor gymnasium while there are several of the regular men back on the squad there are several places which will have to be contended for with the mater ial on the squad some very fast bouts are looked for and with the system of selecting the team it in possible for any man with ability to make good coach sheriden has always followed the system of having try-outs before each meet and in this way it is possible to make the team at any time during the sea son in this way the men have been encouraged to remain out until the season is completed furnishing those who make the team with the best practice pos sible the freshman team began trials yesterday for their meet at blairstown on january 19 while there are a good many out for the squad there is a lack of men in the heavy-weight clas ses an attractive schedule has been arranged for the fresh men and it is hoped that more will take advantage of the ex ceptional chance offered in this sport the same method of se lecting a team is used and even at this late date it is possible to nmke the team direct from a year's run in london the gold coast is to the great majority of people little more than an abstract geogra phical expression they have a vague belief that it is some where on the map of africa and that is is a very unhealthy place — and that summarises the com mon stock of ideas on the sub ject this general ignorance may be accounted for by the fact that west africa is rather off the beaten track it has no fav orable harbors or ports for shipping no means of communi cation with the great continent of which it is a part — it stands isolated on all sides by arid des erts inpenetrable forests swamps and fever stricken tracts except where the surf thunders along its long low and lonely shores human memories are short lived ; all the horror of the slave traffic carried on un til 18g3 between america and the gold coast has been forgot ten long ago it has remained practically a terra incognita and in its isolation it has been shunned by commerce of the many who have landed on its shores few have returned so it is that the name of the gold coast has become a synonym for malarial fever and pesti lemtial death to all europeaus and finds more apt translation in the title the white man's grave despite this dark and shunter reputation to those who have been to and know it the gold coast has a mysterious fascina tion it casts a hypnotic spell over the mind it creeps into the blood the call is heard in the echoing boom of the surf that beats upon its shores and the waving palm is a beckoning hand that lures one on into the mysterious silences of its for ests with an insistence that can not be resisted this alluring quality is hard to explain and defies analysis but so much of that mysterious coastlahd is surrounded and im pregnated with the inexplicable — is not less elusive and beyond all reasonable explanation where the surf thunders along its long low and lonely shores human memories are short lived ; all the horror of the slave traffic carried on un til 18g3 between america and the gold coast has been forgot ten long ago it has remained practically a terra incognita and in its isolation it has been shunned by commerce of the many who have landed on its shores few have returned so it is that the name of the gold coast has become a synonym for malarial fever and pesti lemtial death to all europeaus and finds more apt translation in the title the white man's grave despite this dark and shunter reputation to those who have been to and know it the gold coast has a mysterious fascina tion it casts a hypnotic spell over the mind it creeps into the blood the call is heard in the echoing boom of the surf that beats upon its shores and the waving palm is a beckoning hand that lures one on into the mysterious silences of its for ests with an insistence that can not be resisted this alluring quality is hard to explain and defies analysis but so much of that mysterious coastlahd is surrounded and im pregnated with the inexplicable — is not less elusive and beyond all reasonable explanation
