thomas affair cools silence shrouds case vol 70 — no 15 pi delts to hear meyner speech in uc tomorrow a potential candidate for the democratic presidential nomination will visit lehigh university this weekend new jersey governor robert b meyner is slated to address fi delta epsilon's convention banquet tomorrow meyner twice-elected governor is already regarded as a favorite son candidate for vice-president in the 1960 race for the presidential nomination a conservative democrat in state matters his stand on such na tional issues as civil rights and unemployment compensation place him in the liberal wing of his party according to a poll conducted by congressional quarterly meyner is regarded among the top six candidates some politicians see him as an attractive dark horse compromise candidate in the event of a convention deadlock meyner was defeated for state representative in 1946 elected to the state senate in 1947 elected governor in 1953 and re-elected to that position in the 1957 elections during his term as governor he hat parked a resurgence of demo cratic strength in what had been considered a republican strong hold though he was born a catholic his religion is not ex pected to be an issue in the forthcoming elections he left that faith before the age of twenty and has not affiliated himself with another denom ination some political observers believe that meyner has lost some strength in his state as evidenced by elec tions this month the highway im provement bill which received his strong personal support was de feated this setback however was partially offset by his victory in the state college bond refendum to overcome his lack of back ground in foreign policy matters governor meyner has traveled to asia latin america and more re cently made a much publicized visit to the soviet union the address by new jersey gov ernor robert b meyner will high ifc considers cls support food purchase freshman house presidents recentiy elected are robert giles park robert sofferman drinker and thomas bayer dravo see no page 8 following two days of confusion and speculation l'affaire norman thomas this week settled into un easy quiet with the facts in the case still clouded but slowly emerging principals in the case con tinued to maintain silence on the question of why the inter nationally-noted socialist was denied permission to speak on the campus this year reports and rumors continued to fly as those involved in the case gave a variety of explanations for actions taken in the matter newly-unearthed facts in the affair developed as stories from no less than a half-dozen sources were pieced together by the brown and white dot officers admitted that they had received tentative permission last spring to hear thomas speak on the national debate topic in a closed meet ing reasons for the attempt to extend this permission re mained undetermined the question of procedural policy became somewhat more compli cated as university officials point ed out that dot is both an extra curricular and a co-curricular ac tivity because of its connection with the division of speech as a result of the dual nature of the debate honorory requests for out side speakers would have to be passed up through the academic and/or activities channels most characters in the thomas drama made themselves unavail able for brown and white com ment university president martin d whitaker declined to speak on the subject provost harvey neville was absent from the campus prof h barrett davis flatly re president's report stresses excellence see college page 5 lehigh's educational purpose is the primary interest of the univer sity there must be a very real attempt to make a contribution to education everywhere with special emphasis on our own students according to the report the report states lehigh has inherited from its founders a broad purpose which is still valid — to provide young men with a basis for successful living in the fullest sense of the phrase and to insure leadership for the corn see educational page 7 by eugene goffin the annual report for this year is devoted largely to the academic aspects of the university and to plans for improving our academic position said university presi dent martin d whitaker in his 1958-59 annual report for ten years we have pub lished an annual report for distribution to alumni and friends of lehigh university this has been done in the be lief than an informed con stituency is one of the greatest assets an educational institu tion can have continued dr whitaker proposed financial aid from ifc for the cooperative lecture series and group food buying were the major issues discussed at this mon day's interfraternity council meet ing a motion was passed by ifc to establish a special committee to study the problem of aiding cls members appointed to the committee include tom gilhool otis johnson mike gottlieb and ira friedman all seniors ifc treasurer doug pleasanton pointed out several advantages to the proposed group buying for food and meats such over-all ad vantages as efficient service bet ter-grade cut meats and a realized 12 to 15 per cent saving on foods were discussed the primary con sideration for this project was swift & co one of the largest wholesale purveyors in the coun try it was established that swift & co offers higher grade meats and larger discounts than other local wholesale firms another issue presented before the meeting was a congratulatory letter from dean of students j d leith praising ifc's and pi lamb see ifc page 5 election forms ready petitions for candidates for the 1959 arcadia elections will be available at the student activi ties office in the university center on nov 16 the petitions will be due on nov 20 at 4 p.m cam paigns will begin at 8 p.m the same evening lehigh will investigate area industrial strength in grace hall turnau opera here tonight a survey to determine the industrial development potential of northampton county will soon be undertaken in a cooperative program by lehigh's institute of research for the northampton county asso ciation of chambers of commerce dr george p jenkins associate director of the institute and j paul alderfer of bethlehem president of the chamber group conferred on arrangements yesterday once a formal agreement is signed by dr harvey a neville director of the institute and alderfer the study will get underway un der the direction of prof s george walters associate professor in the the college of business administration the survey will analyze the eco nomic conditions as they affect the present and potential industrial op erations from the study it is hoped to determine the strength and weakness of the components of the county's industrial section and its attractiveness for capital investment the study is to encompass site locations for compilation of a pros pect list for area development ef forts labor force potential com parison of population trends in ur ban and rural areas income an alysis of firms by products and related data plans for the agreement and subsequent survey were reviewed by the chamber association in hotel bethlehem yesterday after noon 60 freshmen sing reveille at least 60 dinkless frosh sang reveille yesterday at 7:30 a.m behind the university center two surprise dink checks by cyanide freshman advisory group caught the unsuspecting class of 63 the group took i.d cards to insure attendance at the song fest phil mezey chairman of the fresh man disciplinary committee re ported an investigation of the dink situation will be made by cyanide sometime after lafayette weekend opera tonlght mozart's abduction from the sergaiio will be presented in grace hall at 8 by the turnau opera players by johann bierbauer the student concert-lecture series will present the second of its programs this evening when the turnau opera players production of mozart's the abduction of the seraglio will be performed in grace hall the composer of tonight's turnau opera company presentation w a mozart never ceases to amaze the world with his prolificacy and indefatigable genius beginning at the age of four when he wrote little pieces for harpsichord some of which are ex tant his brilliance and invention flowed forth in the form of one masterpiece after another until his death at the age of thirty-five with 626 kochel separate works to his credit die entfuhvung aus dem serail — the abduction from the sergaiio — is one of more than a score of operas this one composed in 1781-82 at age twenty six one of the earliest
