arcadia made no progress on a year-old program to revise its con stitution wednesday night as its faculty advisor president and mem bers criticized the group's failure to complete the project facing a deadline only weeks away members of the group were pessimistic about pros pects that the student council will be able to have a final draft of the proposed revision by the november 7 deadline initiated early in the spring se mester under the chairmanship of alfred moore 60 the revision pro posal has been bogged down for most of the current semestetr ac cording to members of the group advisor to arcadia dr lawrence whitcomb noted that he was rath er disappointed that arcadia is not starting work sooner on constitu tional revision the group's constitution calls for presentation of any new constitution to the student body one month before an all-uni versity election where it must be approved by a student vote elections are scheduled for de cember 7-9 thus the new constitu tion must be ready by november 7 arcadia has only one meeting — on november 4 — scheduled before that time in other business president jack branning 60 asked for money to cover costs incurred in entertain ing 12 bolivian students who toured the university last week appro priation was delayed until the next meeting when a detailed breakdown of the expenses will be presented to the group elections chairman john see arcadia page 5 ford foundation grants 19 million to 10 schools sedgwick hopes to reach goal three candidates for ugly man have been dropped from the con test for the failure of their spon soring living groups to turn in cartoon posters according to mich ael jarvis 62 contest chairman the former candidates and their sponsors are evan hagen buck sigma chi james coffas richards 3-b and william c bradbury drinker 1 jarvis said he had extended the deadline for turning in posters for four candidates who had submitted applications but failed to meet the former saturday noon poster dead line only one of the four had sub mitted posters by the newly ap pointed sunday evening deadline and the remaining three were sub sequently disqualified this brings the total number of ugly man can didates to 11 other sponsors are continuing with their campaign plans which include the use of cedar crest girls and a dixieland band in ad dition station wlrn is offering free spot advertising to all spon sors who desire it camera concerti a chamber or chestra to appear in grace hall to night at 8 is unique for its in strumentation of 14 winds and strings the orchestra features the french horn and viola d'amore as solo instruments the found er and director of the group is joseph eger who plays the french horn eger will be a soloist along with voilinist walter trampler who per forms regularly at the casals fes tival and is a frequent guest artist with the budapest string quartet the group is composed of nine strings two french horns two oboes and keyboard their reper toire is varied ranging from bar oque to classical to contemporary each camera concerti per formance offers one of the four mozart horn concerti and a vivaldi concerto for either viola or viola d'amore also offered in the program are works such as handel concerti crossi haydn concerti the tele campus chest chairman henry sedgwick 60 told the brown and white last night that he is still optimistic about the possibility of reaching the fund's 5,000 goal sedgwick reported that early re turns showed only 175 contributed to the charity drive but noted that the low total included only first receipts as of last night much of the money was still in the hands of solicitors the drive will officially close to morrow according to sedgwick out of the trenches by christmas miiitary enthusiasts will be dismayed to learn that trenches crisscrossing the green around the flagpole are not for defense purposes a local utility firm is install ing gas lines to provide gas heat for president whitaker's house and has found it necessary to dig up lehigh greenery to accomplish the purpose emphasizing that engineering education must be revised to im part a thorough understanding of science and mathematics their fron tiers and how they may be applied to the needs of mankind the ford foundation this week announced grants totaling 19,050,000 designed to strengthen engineering education in 10 colleges and universities announced in washington — — wednesday night the program has the goal of providing a sharp boost for pace setting engineering schools and thus for all other schools teaching engineering first major awards in the foun dation's new program for science and engineering the grants will be used for five purposes : fifteen new full scholarships salaries or postdoctoral fellow ships for new faculty at the inter mediate or junior level visiting professorships summei fellowships and promotions of ke professors to senior rank predoctoral fellowships and loai-s for potential engineering facultj members funds for short term residence by outstanding engineers facultj exchanges and released time 01 postdoctoral fellowships for young teachers to do research or experi mentation the ten and clinic will be initiated here tomorrow by the division of speech and delta omicron theta honorary debate society the only tournament of its type held on the east coast the clinament is designed to stress development of debating abilities rather than competition for a trophy or prizes all the participants will be novice debaters or students with no previous debating ex perience the morning session of the clmament will consist of three work shop — clinics conducted by coaches from visiting schools prof w e beattie of rutgers will discuss the problem of definition prof m i kuhr of temple will talk about presumption and the burden of proof in debate dr a n kruger of wilkes college will cover an alysis and arguments in debating after lunch the novice teams will engage in two rounds of de bate on the national topic re solved that congress should be given the power to reverse deci sions of the supreme court in line with the instructional pur poses of the elinament judges will give
