friday october 16 1959 5,500 guests expected on campus tomorrow bethlehem pa axp's ritual not restrictive says president riation the latin students will leave for philadelphia pitts burgh and new york they have spent the past ten days in washington visit of the bolivians marks the first time in recent years that an all-student group has been guided about the campus by the student council arriving several hours behind schedule at 8 p.m yesterday the visitors were escorted to the hotel bethlehem for dinner they spent the remainder of the evening at al pha tau omega chi psi delta tau delta theta chi and mcclin tic-marshall house accompanying the bolivians were two national student as sociation officers robert aragon nsa south american represen tative and gary glenn nsa campus international adminis trator four law students two civil en gineers one industrial engineer two pre-medical students two economics students and a student of architec ture comprised the visiting group the bolivians attended various classes this morning were guests at a luncheon in the university cen ter and toured the campus in the afternoon although only one spoke fluent english several spanish speaking students accompanied them throughout the tour see parent's page 4 an estimated 5,500 parents and relatives are expected to invade the campus tomorrow for the seventh nnnial parents day students may still obtain free tickets for the luncheon and football game until 5 this after noon parents are invited to attend classes tomorrow with their sons buildings of special interest will be open to guests from 9 : 30 a.m un til 12 noon parents are invited to visit fritz engineering laboratory which houses the world's largest universal testing machine also open to guests will be the art gallery in the university library the new foreign language laboratory in lamberton hall and the lgp-30 computer in packard lab a buffet luncheon for stu dents their guests and the faculty will be served from 11 a.m until 12:30 p.m on both levels of grace hall luncheon has been planned so that everyone may be seated by 1:30 p.m at taylor stadium in time for the kickoff of the lehigh-tufts football game first home game of the season there will be free parking for cars at the stadium parking lot and favors faculty direction dean rejects control change the president pf the lehigh chap ter of alpha chi rho denied yester day that his fraternity's ritual served to exclude non-christians the , wesleyan university chapter severed its connections with the parent body last month because of alleged discrimination in the ritual at the same time the presi dent of lehighs sigma chi chapter declined to comment on the action of the sigma chi chapter at wesleyan which also disaffiliated with its national because the national convention failed to remove allegedly dis criminatory membership clauses august napier jr president of the wesleyan chapter declared that his chapter had voted to withdraw after the national convention had refused to change its ritual which he said required all of our mem bers to accept christian theology although the organization does not limit membership to christians he said a non-christian certainly see local page 4 lum control should be taken from the faculty and placed in the hands of a trustee committee in opposing this step the dean said a real effort should be made to solve our problems by revitalizing existing me chanisms before we scrap them on the whole he agreed with the authors analysis of the prob lem terming the report the most effective educational-policy gadfly in many years it is stinging academic administrators and ad ministrator-teachers to much-need ed re-thinking he stated christensen upheld his position by saying that the drastic changes doors for frosh interfraternity council monday night voted to extend invitations to freshmen to attend fraternity parties on the saturday night of houseparty weekend parties will begin at 8 for the rector john steckbeck has begun work at liberty high school beth lehem as a general biology teacher he will also serve as coach of lib erty's swimming team steckbeck well-liked at lehigh left his post in the university's athletic department in the middle of last spring semester at the time of his surprise departure he cited only personal reasons for leaving dean glenn christensen donald morrison former dart mouth provost the report is di rected to trustees who have the final responsibility and authority over the standards of their insti tutions it concludes that curricu by ross chappie transferring the power of deter mining educational-policy from col lege faculties to trustees recom mended in the ruml-morrison re port was challenged monday by glenn j christensen dean of the college of arts and science this recommendation i n memo to a college trustee was rejected by dean christ ensen in a talk at the annual meeting of the pennsylvania association of liberal - arts deans at
