meeting friday straw vote to be taken at col at baltimore second contest of year staged tomorrow morning the brown and white swimmers will leave for baltimore to meet johns hopkins this is the second meet of the year and coach mahoney has corrected the team's defects he noticed in the rutgers encounter swimming is one of the biggest sports at hopkins and the meet with lehigh is being looked for ward to with a great deal of in terest by the baltimore collegians the two squads seem to be pretty evenly matched and are both confi dent of victory the brown and white lineup will be the same as in the last meet with the exception of slight changes in the relay either bad ham or shaffer will be sent as sub stitute for dedan who will be un able to take part much is being expected from the men in game of the year next saturday night when they meet the university of pennsylvania at philadelphia this game marks the resumption of basketball relations between the two institutions the last game be ing playied several years ago the team has been practicing hard since the men returned from vacation and is fast rounding into shape the form displayed by the team in the closing minutes of the muhlenberg game shows that a winning combination has been secured from the large amount of material available the playing of hess and donovan in the game wednesday night indicates that they will start saturday and the guard positions are well filled by straub and kennedy the other forward position is still somewhat in doubt but will probably be filled by maurer who started wednesday reports from pennsylvania seem to indicate a formidable team there again this year three veterans of last year's strong team are back while the two men lost by gradua tion will be filled from new ma terial pennsylvania has played and won two games so far this season the navy and muhlenberg being the defeated teams the game is expected to be hard fought and lehigh s chances of winning are conceded to be indi vidual star for lehigh with seven field goals to his credit two coming in the first and five in the second half he was closely pushed by hess who dropped in four pretty ones and whose passing game was execllent rote made his initial appearance at forward replacing maurer early in the game and al though he only caged two goals his passing was 1 directly responsible for several others wednesday this week the trend of the points brought up was as follows : money is an ever present prob lem with the undergraduate every student faces the question of how to spend his money in many cases it does not seem possible to make the amount available cover the things worth while so many luxuries come in the guise of col lege necessities that it is hard to know which to receive and which to send on their way many an american student has gone through college without at tending an outside lecture or con cert or buying a single book not absolutely required in the college class room for a student money means an opportunity for an edu cation it gives him an oppor tunity for the use of his time and his talent and equally with other factors determines the success or failure of his course the amount a student should spend for board and room is often a hard question to answer a stu dent once said he could not afford to live in the cheapest room in the dormitory by some people college extras are considered luxuries by others necessities for a well ar ranged college course the ques tion often comes up as to what ex tent an extravagant social life de feats the college purpose and what is a due proportion a student is at college under heavy expenses possibly at a sacrifice on the part of parents and he may have to bor row money the danger is that like time money will be fritted away on trivial if not wrong things and the more important matters of necessity slighted a budget is a careful and businesslike plan of the needs of the year and of the funds available to meet those needs an expense acocunt is the careful record of actual expense from week to week and if it is com pared with the budget it enables the student to spend his money in telligently and to know whether he is over-spending or under-spending if over-spending he should give up the less important things in order that he may do the more important bowling results members of the burr board please notice lasted until the evening of january 4 the meetings were held in a large coli seum in dcs moines where every morning and evening between 7,500 and 8,000 students gathered to hear lectures on the conditions and problems facing the present gen eration the men who gave these address es were called from all parts of the world and no trouble or expense was spared in order to obtain the best possible speakers probably the lare'psf glfigaj*uw attending was that of toronto uni versity canada which totaled about one hundred and forty men and women the student volunteer move ment w t as founded in 1886 in massaehusettes since then con ferences have been held at inter vals of about four years the last one was held five years ago in kansas city the convention that has just closed was postponed until this year on account of the world war the purpose of the move ment as outlined by dr john r mott is to awaken a deeper inter est in missionary work among the students of american colleges and to recruit more students into the ranks of the student volunteers since its organization thirty three years ago eight thousand one hundred and forty students from american colleges have sailed to foreign fields among the speakers at the con vention were dr john r mott robert speer robert wilder and sherwood eddy who might be said to be the mainstays of the organ ization among the foreign speak ers were pierre maury french dr hayes colored paul kono mura japanese mr steady african dr carl recce swed ish mr hunrio swiss dr rutgers dutch this list gives ample evidence that the convention was not only of national but of in ternational importance at least 40 different countries were repre sented the lehigh men who were af forded the privilege of attending the convention wish to take this op portunity of thanking the men of the university and other friends whose aid made it possible for them to attend on wednesday afternoon the delta upsilon bowling team last to the sigma chi team the total score being 1856 to 1738 the d u team won the first game but their opponents came back strong in the last two games 1 , winning by a mar gin of 118 pins sehonhardt was the highest bowler of the match getting 208 in the second game the team scores were as follows : sigma chi continued on third page the combined musical clubs held the first rehearsal of the new year on wednesday night in drown hall the glee " club will hold regular rehearsals on wednesday nights in drown hall at 7 30 p.m and will be under the direction of mr shields other meetings will be arranged as are deemed neces sary regular rehearsals will be held for the mandolin club at the same time and place and will be in charge of h s ertner 23 leader of the club the rehearsal held wednesday night was well
