vol 70 — no 44 bethlehem pa arcadians will assume candidates day direction arcadia has accepted the respon sibility of conducting and pro gramming candidates day pro gram next year the shift of responsibility for the three-day program fol lowed an attack on alpha phi omega candidates day guides at the group's last meeting by president jack branning an apo member himself branning had openly attacked apo guides for their appearance and actions at the years first two pre-freshman days apo president clark to talk on galileo mon the rev joseph t clark s.j will lecture on the galileo affair in contemporary retrospect next monday at 10 : 10 a.m in the univer sity center's osbourne room the galileo affair pertains to the conflict between galileo and the roman catholic church regarding theories about the universe a brilliant speaker clark will discuss this contro see father page 3 regretted making the remark as well as any damage he may have done to arcadia's reputation solon myron olstein's human relations committee report was al so accepted by the group as a re sult of the action a human rela tions committee will be established designed primarily to investigate campus relations with instep stu dents olstein voiced the opinion that relations with the indian students were less than satis factory and suggested that see solons page 9 neville reports five in faculty are promoted richard sprenkle had defended the groups actions and the solons voted to volunteer their services for the last of the three days at arcadia's april 22 meeting this week's arcadia action re sulted from a report of solon john talucci's freshman committee's in vestigation of the controversy talucci's interim report also suggested that members of cyanide arcadia associates brown key and apo be used as guides the report specifically recommended however that arcadians not conduct tours talucci told the solons that as sistant director of admissions samuel missimer 50 has expressed approval of the plan also included in talucci's com mittee report were suggestions for handling of arcadia's time allot ment during freshman week and for election of freshman section of ficers president branning apologized for a remark he made at a re cent residence halls council meeting branning had told rhc arcadia is doing nothing . . . it's spring and nobody is doing anything branning told the associate professor moves to professor three assistant pro fessors become associate pro fessors and a research assist ant attains the rank of research assistant professor wallace j richardson will be promoted from associate professor to professor of civil engineering the three promoted from assist ant professor to associate professor are dr albert j mazurkiewicz edu cation dr nicholas h rescher philosophy and dr willard b yates history and government research assistant in civil en gineering theodore v galam bos will be promoted to re search assistant professor richardson who has been at le high since 1952 was graduated from the u s naval academy in 1941 and received his master of science degree at purdue in 1948 he is co author of work sampling dr mazurkiewicz came to lehigh in 1955 after a tenure at temple where he also served as director of the reading clinic at valley forge military academy a 1950 graduate of ursinus he received his master's degree from the university of perm see two page 4 ains libel suit 1 win congdon perplexed graduate enrollment soars in arts 16 won master's in business administration and 16 received doctorates in a 10 year period the total graduate enrollment jumped from 348 in 1949 to 827 this semester for the most part students do their graduate work on a part time basis in the fall of 1951 dean cong don reported full-time enroll ment dropped from a record 132 in 49 to 73 due to the korean conflict full-time enrollment has never reached the 49 level to date but in contrast part see lu page 6 by robert j cochnar a ews editor next year dean of the grad uate school wray h congdon will have a big decision to make — whether to curb the enroll ment of the rapidly growing graduate school before it gets out of hand or to try to cope with the phenomenal rise the decision is an import ant one since in three years grad school enrollment has rocketed from 560 in 1956 to 827 this semester although dr congdon is not sure to what to attribute the rise in a three-year period he reported various trends which he said should be taken into con sideration more people in industry are taking part-time courses the dean noted both in engineer ing and business he said there was a slow but constant in crease among teachers in full time post-graduate work and a small but steady increase in the number of research assistants the majority of men and women enrolled in the grad uate school are seeking mas ter of science degrees in 1958 78 people received m.s de grees while 37 won master's friday may 8 1959 lehigh university brown and white
