see old page 5 arcadia okays budget recommends committees by joe varilla ll&w editorial director dean j d leith this week revealed that he will assess demerits to fraternities guilty of quantitatively minor rule infractions a tofal of five lchigh university group demerits lugdems in a normal span of seven semesters could subject a group to dis ciplinary action the dean of students explained that he could refer a five-lugdem group's case history to either the university discipline committee or to the ifc judiciary committee for action he told the brown and white that whenever possible he would like to refer the matter to the ifc committee — in line with a position of giv ing student government more responsibility first notice of lugdem came in a letter from dean leith to ifc president carl schier who read it to representatives at mon day's ifc meeting ifc members blasted the lugdem plan one representative asserted that there are a lot of things done in a weekend which could probably get five demerits — in one weekend — not seven semesters another member pointed out that leith assesses them arbitrarily still another added that the letter followed the assessment of the first lugdem no mention of the fraternity that received the deremit was revealed in leith's letter he said later that just as in the case of individual demerits names of the fraternities given the lugd ems will not be publicly an nounced a number of fraternity members wanted to know dean leith's defi nition of a minor infraction in answering the same question posed by a brown and white re porter dean leith noted that the following actions all of which have occurred at one time or another would subject a group to a lugd em one fraternity left for the summer while owing a local see lugdem page 7 x-s 375 registration opens for williams contest residence halls reported this to the dean's office and in conjunction placed the house on indefinite pro bation at the end of three weeks on march 2 an appeal can be made to the dean's office to remove the house from probationary status president topping announced that he had visited dean leith and discussed the problems of pilfered signs and other objects being kept in rooms by upper classmen and freshmen alike he proposed that rhc the in terfraternity council and the freshmen take a stand against such pilferage a proposal was discussed where by future incoming freshmen be in doctrinated against such stealing rhc endorsed a letter from dean leith concerning the stealing prob lem and proposed a discipline method involving the handing out of university demerits to offenders discipline in this matter would be handled by the student discipline committee's channels with subse quent reports to be sent to the dean's office dravo house representative jim rice told the group that the rhc constitution committee had met and voted that only minor constitutional changes be made these changes involve the po see rhc page 3 william a smith in a long discussion on the approval of the budget presented to arcadia by its executive committee solon robert walters noted i expected to come here and approve with perhaps some minor modifications student activities committee were otis h johnson 60 samuel r matthews 60 and thomas d swartz 61 approved board of publications candidates were robert m walters 60 clarence e wright 59 m ed ward dehart
