government group twenty eight men — 17 sophomores and 11 juniors — are seeking the va cant posts ballots can be cost tomorrow from 9 a.m to 5 p.m votes will be counted tomorrow night in studio 1 of leith shortly after the christmas vacation prof joseph f libsch chairman of the student faculty committee said sunday prof libsch denied rumors that the committee had already pre pared a report and that it had been rejected by dean leith he said however that dean leith had appeared before the committee to present his views on rushing libsch described leith's comments as the standpoint of someone vitally concerned with the problem prof joseph b mcfadden another member of the committee em phasized that leith is working with 1 " slc and that the dean of students has an open mind on the subject leith's appearance before slc marked the last of a series of hear ings conducted by the committee to ascertain the opinions and re ceive the suggestions of every one connected with rushing others who were invited to com mittee meetings include represen tatives of interfraternity council the freshman counseling system the faculty and the fraternity alumni advisory council libsch said that slc has now reached the point of diminishing returns so far as getting the opin ions of others is concerned a discussion on the facts gathered at the hearings was scheduled for yesterday after noon the chairman of the committee said he hoped to appoint a sub committee to put the facts together for full discussion at next mon days session libsch explained that slc had re ceived a large number of conflict ing viewpoints from the persons who appeared before it we now hope to consider what after all will be the best solution to the problem the committee considers the rushing problem one of the biggest it will have to face it has taken up nothing else since the beginning of the semester libsch said that the persons who appeared before the committee gave not only their opinions but also ex a great deal of superficiality and fashionability in this increased de gree of church affiliation and agreed that conformity played a great part in religious life he added however that one can't pull all of the increased interest aside as superficial in reply to walters question on the amount of religious discrimina tion present on college campuses dean pope said there is now greater tolerance and interest he added there is no monopoly on god's truth concerning chapel attendance at lehigh chaplain fuessle noted that on the average 120 persons attend the sunday afternoon service how see don't must be returned by tuesday dec 16 scl is the student-faculty committee which decides and schedules the concerts and lec tures presented each semester it consists of four faculty mem bers and three rotating student members selected each semes ter dr liston pope dean of the yale divinity school told wlrn listen ers last night that there now is greater chance for religious growth on campuses than at any time during this century the topic of the face the campus panel discussion was religion on the american col lege campus — its present and future trends members of the panel were dr roy a ekhardt head of the department of re ligion chaplain raymond e fuessle paul schock repre senting the brown and white robert walters and jack bran ning representing wlrn and dean pope robert cochnar was the moderator dean pope said most college stu dents today are more receptive and closer to the church than ever be fore citing yale as an example he said that one-third of the students have some religious commitment one-third are indifferent toward re ligion and one-third are somewhere between the first two stages in response to a question by schock dr pope said that there is interested freshmen may now pick up applications for appointment to the freshman counseling program these applications may be secured from any member of the gryphon society the freshman residence halls counselors from the applications ap proximately 15 new counselors will be selected the selections will be made on evidence of the highest standards of conduct effective leadership qualities and high academic performance in addition the applicants must show a sincere desire to contribute not only to their sections but to the gryphon society as well membership in the gryphon so ciety offers an opportunity to ren der a unique service to the univer sity recognition as an employee of the university participation in ex tra-curricular activities and associa tion professionally and socially with the members of the lehigh family according to a recent announcement aside from such intangibles gryphons are paid on a scale in ac cordance with qualifications exper ience length of service and duties the gryphon society gets its name from the mythological beast who is supposed to have guarded the gold of ancient scythia in the same way the gryphons in the words of dean j d leith guard the gold of lehigh — her freshman class the gryphon society was found ed last fall by walter grobowski who served as its president for two semesters snoball features drama dance featuring drama dance and jazz the sophomore-sponsored snoball weekend will arrive saturday after noon the weekend's activities will get under way on saturday afternoon when lehigh's christ mas city six and the clif cleffs will be feautred in a jazz con cert at grace hall mustard and cheese will present time limit saturday night in the broughal high auditorium the pro duction will begin at 7:30 the weekend will reach its climax saturday at the snoball in grace hall music for dancing will be pro vided by perennial favorite walt simpson dancing will get under way at 9 and last until 1 a.m see weekend page 3 interfaith council oppor tunity for the individual to meet associate and discuss his beliefs and the beliefs of others with those well informed in the various faiths catholic protestant and jewish organizations are present and ac tive under the coordination of the interfaith council jewish student religious activity is sponsored by the hillel foun dation and catholic students may supplement their scholastic activities with the newman club six protestant denominational groups are head ed under the christian council presently two other groups are active that have no direct affiliation with the three major faith organizations the christian science students under the guidance of prof robert cutler music department head are in the process of organizing and expect to associate themselves with the other organizations in the near future also dissassociated at present from the formal student religious structure on campus is the intervarsity christian fellowship charles stitt is president of this group
