phi beta kappa incidentally re mained a secret society until it be came honorary in 1831 women have been admitted to membership since 1875 but the father of fraternities as they exist today was the union triad a trio of frater nities founded at union college kappa alpha founded in 1825 ever since the first one was formed back in the 18th century fraternities have exerted their in fluence on the american way of life perhaps the first college secret society was the flat hats a group founded about 1750 at the college of william and mary its activities were chiefly liter ary in nature many statesmen including thomas jefferson were members some give paternal credit to phi beta kappa founded in 1776 at the college of william and mary for the purpose of debating literary phil osophical social and political topics those who claim that this is the first fraternity show that this was the first organization to initiate several things which are character istic of fraternities among them a greek-letter name an elaborate in itiation ritual and a code of laws a wave of german measles which has hit the lehigh campus in the past few weeks has prompted school officials to emphasize that they do not consider the situation to be of an emergency nature dr george mccoy health service director and dr joseph pomponio assistant director told the brown and white that they planned to sit tight and hope for the best since no ac curate prediction for the future can be made as of wednesday afternoon dr mccoy stated that there have been 4 cases this month seven cases were reported in january and an other 15 in february students who live close enough are being sent home while other cases are sleep ing in the health center where bed capacity has been greatly increased although highly contagious the german measles are not very harm ful dr mccoy explained the illness is characterized by a simple cold followed by a rash the doc tors emphasized that students often suffer for only a 24-hour period at most the symptoms remain for three or four days referring to the influenza outbreak earlier in the year dr pomponio compared the two by explaining that the measles can be diagnosed with much greater accuracy than the flu in number of students affected this outbreak is not anywhere as large as the first semester he added those who have measles once in thjeir life usually have complete protection the dictors stated thus those students who were exposed or affected during the measles wave two years ago are probably safe dr mccoy noted that most of the current cases are freshmen exactly two years ago this week lehigh was in the jthroqs of a measles epidemic which culminated on march 24 1956 when dean of students wray h congdon sus pended classes a week before the scheduled vacation at that time there were only 60 reported cases of measles laddie soucek and his christmas city six will provide the music for tomorrow afternoons jazz concert the christmas city six are a product of lehigh university itself and are lehigh's finest contribution to jazz since the old riverside seven the performance to be held at grace hall will be of special interest since it will be the first public performance of a new song nghtwalker this composition is a collaboration by gerry romig and pete schorer two of the band members the christmas city six began their career by holding regular meet ings on the steps of grace hall they were then called the doodletown five but changes in publicity and personnel have brought about the new name ...... jazz six offer original work nightwalker the colorful and gay orient will be brought to lehigh tonight when the mustard and cheese players raise the curtain on the first of three performances of the tea house of the august moon originally scheduled to open last night the play had its open ing date postponed until to night because of inclement weather yesterday an extra per formance will be given monday to provide the play with the greatest possible infusion of realism the production is com plete with a gayly decorated okinawan teahouse and mar garet ono a lotus blossom transported from tokyo via moravian college charles coutant opens tonight in the role of captain fisby before an audience which included 800 stu dents invited from the local high school dramatic clubs jay russel will take over the lead role tomor row and monday the authentic ori prima donna — lady astor a goat who made good eats from the helmet of a fellow mustard and cheese player she opens tonight in the teahouse of the august moon this is the gracious lady's second appearance in a m&c production lehigh university brown and white new monacans to greet spring un 6-0331 teahouse will launch monte carlo weekend weekend of the semester dates began to arrive this after noon and although the temperature may be low the mere presence of the fair sex brings a warmth to the second day of spring the weekend will start tonight with the presentation of the pulitzer prize winner teahouse of the august moon at 7:30 in broughal auditorium doug kirn 58 as sakini heads the cast tomorrow afternoon at 2 men and dates
