tempted enlistment in the army it seems that his disappear ance was due to the lack of will ingness on his part to comply with the command of the sophomore council to appear at the recent lehigh-gettysburg football game in fantastic ar ray this punishment was met ed out to him because he was caught out on the streets after 8 o'clock at night which was a flagrant defiance of freshman regulations young palm appeared again at his regular classes on mon day morning university band makes progress dean mcconn presents his views on the taming of the frosh new plans are discussed new during the past week practically completes the cam paign organization for the na tion-wide endowment ' effort further appointments of local chairmen have been also re ported to headquarters by some of the district chairmen the neyv district chairmen are texas district — joseph ■b townsend e e 95 general contractor of houston texas arkansas district — john t fuller 03 general superintend ent of the american bauxite company at bauxite ark ' utah district james c dick c e 95 consulting mining en gineer of salt lake city utah although the organization hi other districts has been under way for some time and the cam paign has been in progress for about a week the chairmen in the above three districts are hoping to complete their tasks by the appointed day mr town send has thirty-five alumni and former students living in four teen towns in his district and will use a group of assistants to help him sell the greater le high idea to his prospects in the arkansas and utah districts there are eight and thirteen le high men respectively perhaps the most interesting though difficult task in the campaign organization falls to the lot of nicholas h heck 03 chief of the division of ter restial magnetism of the u s coast and geodetic survey at washington while on official government business in porto rico and panama this month he has consented to act as chair men for those two sections and last meeting of the mustard and cheese dramatic it was definitely decided to once again stage a musical comedy the mustard and cheese have started a competition for the best scenario this is open to all undergraduates and the sum of 25 will be awarded to the student submitting the best scenario the competition has just started and will last until the christmas holidays the scenarios should be submitted to j m piersol of the delta tau delta fraternity as was stated above the show would be a musical comedy however it will not be necessary to write the music all that is wanted is a comedy plot the summary of the story in about 100 to 120 words description of the sets or acts which will be limited to from 1 to 4 acts and not mlore than 3 sets these sets must be logical and within rea son what is wanted is some thing entailing low expense and no great amount of work and no impossible or pomplicated sets the characters must be des cribed and their relation to the plot well defined it has been suggested ; to have a hero a heroine a comedy male lead a comedy female lead about 2 more character parts and the vest as you please between 3 and 6 major parts 2 and 8 min or parts and a chorus of 14 the writer will not be concern ed with the chorus whatsoever this phase of the show is strict ly by itself in writing up the scenario avoid too much local color the thing to work for is funny situa tions as original as possible easy to stage and a snappy plot the play committee compos ed of messrs j m piersol chair man d p hoagland and r h dalgleish have mtet and decided on a little plot of their own the work on this is getting along fine % the work on the chorus will begin about november 1 a dancing class will be formed and all those who join it will receive gym credits come on now fel lows join this class and help the mustard and cheese put across another show which will even surpass last year's wonder ful performance everyone knows that this class will mean some work but on the whole it will be a good way to spend your leisure time so let's get be hind the club and report on november 1 deutcher verein meets to-morrow lehigh plays one of its hardest games of this sea son it i with the gridiron war riors of f'ordham last year the fordham team had only four veterans with which to start a team but in spite of this great handicap they built up a power ful combination with the experi enced men as a nucleus what was a disadvantage last year is d positive gain this year of the entire last year's squad only one man boutot is not eligible for this season the 22 team mani fested a fine spirit and great de terrfiination captain myers healy boutot and walbridge of the veterans and manning of the new men showed up admir ably in last year's play two of fordham's games of last year should be interesting to follow ers of the brown and white they are muhlenberg 20 ford ham 20 and rutgers 20 ford ham 15 the coming game will be the third start for fordham this year on october 6 the gotham ite backs rolled up a total of 44 to mt st marys 0 the team appeared extremely powerful and scored nearly at will upon its opponents on friday a we£k ago l boston college triumphed over fordham by a score of 20 to 0 this game gves many valu able pointers on the strength and weaknesses of the new yorkers the outstanding fail ure of the team was the neglect of the line to protect the punters because of lack of distance and the poor support given the punt ers the fordham backs lost as much as 30 yards on an ex change of punts meyers mann ing and graham did the kick ing if they lack skill in some tfranches of the game it is made up by the spirit and fight that they have exhibited they have a strong aerial attack and are hard tacklers tom leary is the star linesman playing at left tackle fallon playing at guard is a former lehigh man he at tended this university two years ago tommy meyers who plays quarterback is regarded as the star of the backfield he is adept at passing punting and end circling graham at halfback is also a triple threat walbridge at halfback has an educated toe the probable lineup is left end healey fitzgerald left tackle leary % left guard ryan centre brennan right guard fallon v right tackle bill right end dunn quarter back manning me nulty right half back meyers contrived on page r column 2 at a meeting of the sopho more council in coppee hall last wednesday evening the cases of weinroth and william palm were submitted for re-trial on the grounds of too severe a sentence weinroth was permit ted to state his case and plead ed guilty to breaches of fresh man regulations in carrying his hands in his pockets not wear ing his frosh cap and minor breaches leniency was grant ed because of his attitude at the smoker before the rutgers game where he participated in a box ing bout his punishment for breaking regulations therefore was limited to wearing his freshman c*ap inside out a green tie his pockets sewn up and a 12 x 12 sign on his back bear ing the legend a cap on the head is worth two in the pock et the case of palm was consid ered and it was decided that the sentence be lightened to his remaining at home after seven o'clock for two weeks beginning last thursday and he is permit ted to go out on sunday even ings only during this period dean mcconn attended the meeting as a guest of the coun cil and gave his impression of the present method of taming the new men he felt that this was prep school stuff and he hoped that this practice of par ading men as exhibitions around the campus be gradually permit ted to die out he felt that when men came to college they were old enough to need no taming dean mcconn at gettysburg the band this year started out under a great handicap but it has made good to an extent far exceeding the most optimistic expectations joe ricapito the leader during the past three years did not come back to col lege this appeared to be an al most impossible obstacle for the band to overcome joe could play every instrument in the band one cannot fail to understand the value of such a leader un der joe's instruction one could easily become an accomplished musician in a year it takes work to do such things and joe ricapito worked with this great loss the band started out this year with shields as leader and in two weeks the band was a working unit they played at the dinner given by the alumni in launching the four million dollar drive the music being bi-oadcasted from new york and philadel phia their numbers won the ap plause of radio fans throughout the country the band played at the rutgers game in excellent style they were especially com plemented on their marching i'orsn credit for this goes to captain c a shamotulski who has been working very hard for the past few weeks with the band lehigh has always been noted for its band and from the prospects presented this year the reputation is to b,e upheld tribunal deals with freshmen plans were discussed for the activities of the coming year also the admitting of new mem bers into the society after this short business meeting refresh ments were served and general topics discussed last wednesday evening at eight o'clock the deutcher verein a german honorary so ciety held its first meeting of the present school year at the home of professor palmer the officers of the society are william homeyer presi dent ralph schwarz vice president donald parsons treasurer and w kichline secretary tau beta pi convention the thirty-eighth annual con vention of the honorary engi neering fraternity of tau beta pi will be held on october 18 19 and 20 at the university of kentucky at lexington ken tucky lehigh will be represent ed at the convention by presi dent werft of the lehigh chap ter of the fraternity tau beta pi is a lehigh institution of long standing being founded at this university in june 1885 under the auspices of prof e h wil liams jr it has since spread to nearly all of the principal tech nical and scientific schools college president at 23 milliman forced out by injury • for remainder of season lafayette's football prospects for the remainder of the v 1923 season received a severe blow when milliman the star of the maroon backfield was removed to philadelphia to undergo treatment for a serious injury to his eye with milliman out of the lafayette backfield the ma roon eleven lose the pinnacle around which the lafayette of fense is built this season the injury is the result of the game on saturday afternoon when in a mdre or less easy manner coach . sutherland's charges romped away to an easy victory over franklin & mar shall during one of the scrim mages one of the lancaster players in some manner stuck his finger with great force di rectly over the pupil of the eye causing great pain to the star full back at the time the act was purely accidental milliman however continued to play and thought nothing of his injury during or after the game however on sunday he experienced much pain and was treated by several easton phy sicians on their advice he con sulted an eye specialist and when informed that symptoms of hemmorrhages in the back of the eye were evident he remain ed in philadelphia for treatment new library at ursinus among his many other duties as dean of this institution dr mcconn will represent lehigh university at gettysburg today october the nineteenth gettysburg college is holding the inauguration of their new president dr h w hanson and has invited all the presidents of the colleges and universities of this part of the country to at tend dean mcconn will repre sent president richards of le high this afternoon there will be held a meeting of the asso ciation of college presidents of pennsylvania which will be in direct connection with the in auguration of president han som at this affair also bean mcconn will represent president richards and lehigh univer sity one of the improvements on the ursinus campus this fall is the furnishing and opening of a new library building a new system of lights has been in stalled in the field cage charles e whittle president of ogden college in kentucky is but 23 years of age the boy president was thirteen years old before he saw a railroad and at nineteen was a graduate of yale west virginia university has found a new method of dealing with the conduct of its fresh men in place of the vigilance committee a secret tribunal which has heretofore directed its attention to freshmen activi ties a trial board has been es tablished the new method provides that all freshmen charged with violation of campus rules will have a formal trial and the privilege of asking the faculty committee to sit as an adivsory committee the spphs may carry out the decisions of the court which must be approved by the president of the univer sity time was when a college ed ucation was associated with bright hat bands and loud yells it was popularly conceded that the college of hard knocks was a better school realizing the debt that the city . of bethlheem owes to le high university for both its edu cational and economical value the chamber of cbmmerce of bethlehem approved of a drive for 100,000 as its contribution to the greater lehigh fund the meeting was held last friday in the university room at hotel bethlehem at which time w r okeson 96 presi dent of the chamber of com merce outlined the drive and at the same time enumerated the benefits derived by the presence of such an institution in the city's midst it has been estimat ed that lehigh means 1,000,000 to the city every year and this with a student enrollment of only 1100 the immediate benefit accruing to the city is the enlargment of the " student body to 1500 which will be made possible by means of the j endowment fund the drive for fhe city's quota w^s heartily re ceived and endorsed the executive committee as appointed is comprised of dr w p walker chief surgeon at st luke's hospital chairman jas e mathews president of the bethlehem trust company vice chairman and a h buck sec retary of the chamber of com merce secretary . those present at the meeting also included the following councilman wm refowich ja.s m degnan jos mcgarr and pen goodman will skip over st luke's course to determine places on team friday the hill and dale ex perts will dash over the long st luke's course in practice for the intra-mural race which will be held friday the 26th the first seven men that finish in the in tra-mural will make the trip to pittsburgh and race the car negie tech team the first three men to cross the tape in the intra-mural will receive a medal donated by coach morris kanaly the following wednesday november 7th the brown and white harriers will meet the maroon team from down the stream over the st luke's course on the 10th it is ex pected that the lehigh aggrega tion will meet dickinson at»car lisle though the meet is as yet a tentative match the big meet of the season falls on the 17th of november when the middle atlantic states intercollegiates will be held in van cortland park nfw york city with the array of talent present this year it is expected that the brown and white council in coppee hall last wednesday evening the cases of weinroth and william palm were submitted for re-trial on the grounds of too severe a sentence weinroth was permit ted to state his case and plead ed guilty to breaches of fresh man regulations in carrying his hands in his pockets not wear ing his frosh cap and minor breaches leniency was grant ed because of his attitude at the smoker before the rutgers game where he participated in a box ing bout his punishment for breaking regulations therefore was limited to wearing his freshman c*ap inside out a green tie his pockets sewn up and a 12 x 12 sign on his back bear ing the legend a cap on the head is worth two in the pock et the case of palm was consid ered and it was decided that the sentence be lightened to his remaining at home after seven o'clock for two weeks beginning last thursday and he is permit ted to go out on sunday even ings only during this period dean mcconn attended the meeting as a guest of the coun cil and gave his impression of the present method of taming the new men he felt that this was prep school stuff and he hoped that this practice of par ading men as exhibitions around the campus be gradually permit ted to die out he felt that when men came to college they were old enough to need no taming dean mcconn at gettysburg the band this year started out under a great handicap but it has made good to an extent far exceeding the most optimistic expectations joe ricapito the leader during the past three years did not come back to col lege this appeared to be an al most impossible obstacle for the band to overcome joe could play every instrument in the band one cannot fail to understand the value of such a leader un der joe's instruction one could easily become an accomplished musician in a year it takes work to do such things and joe ricapito worked with this great loss the band started out this year with shields as leader and in two weeks the band was a working unit they played at the dinner given by the alumni in launching the four million dollar drive the music being bi-oadcasted from new york and philadel phia their numbers won the ap plause of radio fans throughout the country the band played at the rutgers game in excellent style they were especially com plemented on their marching i'orsn credit for this goes to captain c a shamotulski who has been working very hard for the past few weeks with the band lehigh has always been noted for its band and from the prospects presented this year the reputation is to b,e upheld tribunal deals with freshmen plans were discussed for the activities of the coming year also the admitting of new mem bers into the society after this short business meeting refresh ments were served and general topics discussed last wednesday evening at eight o'clock the deutcher verein a german honorary so ciety held its first meeting of the present school year at the home of professor palmer the officers of the society are william homeyer presi dent ralph schwarz vice president donald parsons treasurer and w kichline secretary tau beta pi convention the thirty-eighth annual con vention of the honorary engi neering fraternity of tau beta pi will be held on october 18 19 and 20 at the university of kentucky at lexington ken tucky lehigh will be represent ed at the convention by presi dent werft of the lehigh chap ter of the fraternity tau beta pi is a lehigh institution of long standing being founded at this university in june 1885 under the auspices of prof e h wil liams jr it has since spread to nearly all of the principal tech nical and scientific schools college president at 23 milliman forced out by injury • for remainder of season lafayette's football prospects for the remainder of the v 1923 season received a severe blow when milliman the star of the maroon backfield was removed to philadelphia to undergo treatment for a serious injury to his eye with milliman out of the lafayette backfield the today october the nineteenth gettysburg college is holding the inauguration of their new president dr h w hanson and has invited all the presidents of the colleges and universities of this part of the country to at tend dean mcconn will repre sent president richards of le high this afternoon there will be held a meeting of the asso ciation of college presidents of pennsylvania which will be in direct connection with the in auguration of president han som at this affair also bean mcconn will represent president richards and lehigh univer sity one of the improvements on the ursinus campus this fall is the furnishing and opening of a new library building a new system of lights has been in stalled in the field cage charles e whittle president of ogden college in kentucky is but 23 years of age the boy president was thirteen years old before he saw a railroad and at nineteen was a graduate of yale west virginia university has found a new method of dealing with the conduct of its fresh men in place of the vigilance committee a secret tribunal which has heretofore directed its attention to freshmen activi ties a trial board has been es tablished the new method provides that all freshmen charged with violation of campus rules will have a formal trial and the privilege of asking the faculty committee to sit as an adivsory committee the spphs may carry out the decisions of the court which must be approved by the president of the univer sity time was when a college ed ucation was associated with bright hat bands and loud yells it was popularly conceded that the college of hard knocks was a better school realizing the debt that the city . of bethlheem owes to le high university for both its edu cational and economical value the chamber of cbmmerce of bethlehem approved of a drive for 100,000 as its contribution to the greater lehigh fund the meeting was held last friday in the university room at hotel bethlehem at which time w r okeson 96 presi dent of the chamber of com merce outlined the drive and at the same time enumerated the benefits derived by the presence of such an institution in the city's midst it has been estimat ed that lehigh means 1,000,000 to the city every year and this with a student enrollment of only 1100 the immediate benefit accruing to the city is the enlargment of the " student body to 1500 which will be made possible by means of the j endowment fund the drive for fhe city's quota w^s heartily re ceived and endorsed the executive committee as appointed is comprised of dr w p walker chief surgeon at st luke's hospital chairman jas e mathews president of the bethlehem trust company vice chairman and a h buck sec retary of the chamber of com merce secretary . those present at the meeting also included the following councilman wm refowich ja.s m degnan jos mcgarr and pen goodman will skip over st luke's course to determine places on team friday the hill and dale ex perts will dash over the long st luke's course in practice for the intra-mural race which will be held friday the 26th the first seven men that finish in the in tra-mural will make the trip to pittsburgh and race the car negie tech team the first three men to cross the tape in the intra-mural will receive a medal donated by coach morris kanaly the following wednesday november 7th the brown and white harriers will meet the maroon team from down the stream over the st luke's course on the 10th it is ex pected that the lehigh aggrega tion will meet dickinson at»car lisle though the meet is as yet a tentative match the big meet of the season falls on the 17th of november when the middle atlantic states intercollegiates will be held in van cortland park nfw york city with the array of talent present this year it is expected that the brown and white
