schubert to negro spirit uals american contralto marian an derson proved to be the biggest attraction in student concerts-lec tures programs since the appearance of the royal philharmonic several years ago charles j moravec university public information head said that the near capacity crowd in grace hall on friday night num bered close to 3,000 students were however in moravec's opinion outnumbered by towns people miss anderson's program began with music from the old world by george frederick handel and franz schubert the old german songs called lieder were excellent dem onstrations of the singer's vocal abil ities however miss anderson did not capture the hearts of the audi ence until the fourth and fifth por tions of the program devoted to the spirituals we know so well and refrigeration units and the crash of an occasional dropped tray lehigh's plush new student dining service opened in the university center last week as hundreds of students streamed into the multi-million dollar building still unfinished in several sections words of awe and amaze ment spread throughout the crowd hey this dining room is beautiful . . . this puts to shame several country clubs i've seen . . . really classy . . . not bad . . . damn rest of center to open soon dig in — a hungry group of students attack their first trayful of food in the university center all except the last man are so pre occupied that they do not seem to notice the brown and white photog rapher must be good food good were typical of sentiments which echoed through the crowd onlookers for the first meal in cluded several fraternity members vice-president e k smiley treas urer elmer glick and associate dean of students j d leith this is something we've been waiting for for a long time it should ranging from dissatisfaction with lehigh street paving to establishing a suggestion box committee members of the new arcadia were officially sworn in earlier in the day by chaplain raymond feussle dean preston parr gave the group a short welcoming speech at the evening meeting joe gratto welcomed the new men and form ally handed the gavel over to larry wright incoming president prof lawrence whitcomb was again chosen as faculty adviser treasurer john daniel reported that arcadia's financial records were in very bad shape as of last nov 31 total assets were 2395.35 many students believe that bookstore prices are far out of line . . . despite the fact that they have just moved into new quar ters there has been no increase in stock except in books re ported jim weisberg after con siderable comment weisberg was chosen chairman of a com mittee to examine the supply bureau operation brent pendleton and dick top see aecadia page 9 temperamental waitreses mal functioning coffee urns and clogged steam lines are only a few of the problems encountered in setting up the student dining service in the university center what's it like to set up an eat ing plan to serve 3,600 meals daily in a building not yet com alumni form advisory unit the host of varied problems which lehigh's 30 fraternities have shoul dered in increasing numbers over the past several years may be solved at least partially if plans laid by an alumni association formed saturday materialize gathering in recently reno voted drown hall 75 fraternity alumni and faculty advisors heard discussed and accepted plans for the formulation of the lehigh fraternity alumni ad visory council conceived with the purposes of promoting the general welfare of the university establishing the fur therance of friendly and cooperative see unit page 9 what's in store in the future for the university center heres a run down on what you can expect to find in packer hall within the next few weeks and months before the end of the month family style waiter service will be initiated in the student dining area as soon as larger tables are received for the north dining room all evening meals except on sunday and monday evenings will be served by wait ers faculty members currently eating downtown will soon be able to dine in the asa packer room on the third floor of the building in addition to faculty luncheons the room will be available for either faculty or stu dents for meals with dates or guests the snack bar to be open from 6 in the morning until midnight is also being rushed to completion any student will be able to eat there at any time of day plans to show movies every night before and after dinner are being formulated a round the-clock music service for the building will soon provide back ground melodies for diners and visitors the multi-purpose room capable of seating several hundred persons will be the scene of meetings movies and lectures dozens of requests are pouring in from student
