money-mak er for the sponsoring class the change proposed by ifc stated tillinghast would mean a de crease in importance of house party itself and an additional as sessment on the members of the freshman by a group of over zealous students has resulted in the following letter to the student body written by joseph gratto 58 presi dent of arcadia to the student body the occurence on the lafayette campus culminating in the scalp ing of a lafayette student was dis cussed this evening at our initial meeting and the general consensus of arcadia regarding this incident was as follows such class of 61 the three lehigh stickers on the car were concealed by passengers who seemed to be doing nothing more than casually leaning against the vehicle when the bewildered neophyte could not meet house several bona fide lafayette upperclass men became aroused at the sight of the stickers the re maark that it was a newly pur chased used car quieted all suspicion it was just before reaching the house that one of the brothers remembered that he had to pick up something in town the conversa tion turned to lehigh and the frosh carefully .^ ined what he would do if he caught an engineer his trustees vote tuition rise of 100 for 58 un 6-0331 greeks veto freshmen visitors during hp vol 69 no 2 friday september 20 1957 punch party added to hop sellout near arcadians dispute proposal to request ifc to reverse its decision to ban freshmen from fraternity houses over houseparty the group met in coppee 1 wednesday night because of delay in completion of their meeting room in the university center dr lawrence whitcombe standing is serving as advisor to the eleventh arcadia arcadia votes 9-2 for frosh at hp an increase in undergraduate tuition of 100 in each of the three colleges of the university effective september 1958 was announced mon day by treasurer elmer w glick the annual rate will then be 1,000 with an additional feel of 100 annually for students enrolled in the college of engineering and students enrolled in the five-year arts and engineering program be yond the first year the present rate of 900 was established in 1956 when the board of trustees increased tuition by 175 in arts and business and 200 in en gineering effective last september in announcing the new increase treasurer glick said the decision was a reluctant one it was reached only after a careful analysis of re trenchments which would become necessary if lehigh university were to continue its present tuiton rate faced with the choice of re ducing the university's stand ards of operation or of voting the necessary raise in tuition to maintain them the trustees were unwilling to jeopardize the students welfare the university announced it would continue the policy of allow ing tuition payments to be made aver extended periods of install ments of 60 20 and 20 per cent for the semesters total charges additional scholarship allocations will be granted in a move intended to avoid discrimination against well qualified students who cannot af ford the increased tuition rates additional costs were incurred by freshmen this semester when dormitory rental was increased to 150 a semester prior to the increase room rent in the fresh man dorms ranged from 110 to 135 depending on the type of room since the increase was only for dravo drinker and richards fresh men^were the only ones affected freshmen will not be allowed to visit fraternity houses during house party the decision was made by ifc on monday night after a heated debate in which both sides pre sented numerous arguments a 16-14 vote decided the issue in favor of closing the houses to the frosh it was mentioned by an ifc of ficer that officials are planning to expand the freshmen dormitory par ties and provide activities for the frosh intended to increase their par ticipation in houseparty opinions of those opposed to the frosh entering the houses ran along the lines of drinking law violations and illegal rushing some of the men were afraid that if a freshman got into trouble after drinking at a house the fraternity system would be put under pressure several ifc members were a fii»id that rushing might be car ried on by the men in the houses the freshmen visit others ex pressed the sentiment that they preferred not to have their houses filled with stag frosh those who were in favor of hav ing the frosh at the parties stated that since the houses are so dis rupted during the parties and so few brothers are actually present at the time there would not be much opportunity for rushing there was no opinion expressed by the proponents of freshman vic iting about the enforcement of the pennsylvania liquor code which makes the vast majority of the frosh unable to drink legally it is christman-saucon hall to one viewing the unique hair cut sported by a certain lafayette freshman it would seem that the 1957 lehigh-lafayette campaign has already begun on tuesday just off the lefa by frank winter the appearance of approximately 500 damsels saturday evening will kick off the freshman social season with the annual dink hop the ladies will be coming from centen ary beaver cedar crest immacu lata and four nursing schools local ly situated a committee of four sopho mores will attempt the task of pairing off the lovelies with their dates the happy throng will then repair to lamberton hall where a roast beef dinner buffet style will await them an additional feature heretofore absent at the dink hop has been added a reception during and after the dinner the purpose of thirf function is to fill the gap between dinner and the dance punch will be served by members of the sophomore class cabinet at no additional cost the lounges in richards and drinker houses will host the reception
