hix nix sex but ok hex the success of quintain has prompted a group of thoughtful undergraduates to establish an even newer literary magazine sextain at least that is what it was called until yesterday when the board of publications objected to the suggestiveness of the title at an emergency meeting last night the editors after agreeing with the department of public re lations that all poetry is suggestive anyhow suggested hextain as a compromise that would demonstrate our solidarity with the natives of this region no action has yet been taken but already contributions are flooding in the first issue will consist of a poem by professor bewley entitled general patton among the night ingales see dean page 6 see praises page 6 civic authority and responsibility by an imaginative extension of this practice and the principles which underlie it the editors of the brown and white have invited members of the uni versity faculty to edit and publish this issue of the paper houseparty is a time when good feelings a bound when burning student-administration or student-faculty issues are put aside and so the newspaper's responsibilities to the university com munity are somewhat less than usual thus the necessary sacrifice in editorial standards may be made most safely at this time university professors are notoriously a secluded lot they spend most of their time in libraries and laboratories with occasional intermissions in the class room they write and speak more than most people see profs page 3 for some time it has been the custom in a num ber of communities to turn over the operation of local governments to young people for a day boys and girls from the scouts 4-h clubs hi-y and sim ilar organizations are appointed to the city council and key municipal posts and under the supervision of their elders discharge the duties of these civic offices no one argues that local government is ad ministered with greater skill or efficiency on these days in fact it is only at times when these two qualities can be temporarily sacrificed that the young people take office the justification for the practice is to be found rather in modern educational theory which holds that learning is best advanced in real-life situations the argument runs that civic virtue for example can best be inculcated through the direct exercise of parr seizes houseparty issue of b&w offer a program of re creational and cultural activities saturday afternoon april 27 between 1 and 5 p.m designed to appeal to the more serious-minded undergraduates and their guests a house-and-garden tour will throw open a series of little-known beauty spots in the area and illustrate various aspects of modern home-making the tour has been designed to conform with the statutes of the commonwealth of pennsylvania we planned the program with several objectives said prof j b severs head of the department of english for one thing we wished to make available as fully as possible the cultural and aesthetic amenities of the lehigh valley features often overlooked by houseparty merry makers in the past we wished also to provide wholesome entertainment that would not merely make saturday afternoon memorable but would prove practically useful to these young people who will be severs winced slightly the parents and homemakers of the next generation and we were anxious to respond to persist ent undergraduate demand for closer student-faculty relationships the co-operation within the department has been wonder ful continued prof severs who is planning to be away from bethlehem between april 25 and 30 everybody was eager to pitch in and help contracts for next year have not yet been sent out he added the program includes visits to the following houses wuthering flats home of prof and mrs r l armstrong just west of the perm-dixie cement com pany's plant in lower nazareth township a formal dutch garden and parterre with small ornamental water is backed by a university have talked a great deal about the hundred year plan which has been offered as a far-sighted approach to our future as an institution of higher learning unfortunately our adminis trators like their counterparts in colleges all over the country have not been able to divorce themselves from thinking in a traditional pattern no longer acceptable in the era of radia tion i wish to offer a simple plan which i am sure will strike all thoughtful people as a sound prac ticable solution to all our prob lems it is modern revolutionary and simple even obvious if one wonders why no one has proposed it before i can suggest only that people are prone to the fallacy that a complex problem must perforce have a complex solution and that university officials prefer ed pol proposes shaft for dean the committee to undermine south mountain for the beneficia tion education training and en lightenment of the gneiss students of the lehigh family is a sub-com mittee of the coordinating com
