eliot lawrence will provide danccable rhythms at the satur day night formal of ifc weekend to be held on march 15 and 16 max kaminsky will supply the dixie for the saturday afternoon dixie con cert the formal will be held in grace hall but members of the dixie concert committee are having trouble finding a place to hold the little dixie-land affair committee members found that local hall operators are reluctant to rent their halls for lehigh jazz sessions the few halls which are available are either too small or forbid the serving of beer which the committee would like to include in the affair numerous suggestions have been made to the committee but all of them have faded out the hungarian hall which has been the scene of many fine dixie concerts has proved too small — as those who attended the concert last year will well remember — and members of the committee headed by fred man ley 57 have been forced to look elsewhere max kaminsky who will supply the dixie for the concert is well known in the east for his fast and furious rhythms he is featured at the central plaza in new york city and is a favorite of the college set those who attended last spring houseparty will remember the danceable music of elliot lawrence which held most of the dancers on the upper floor of grace hall the entire evening lawrence has made over 250 records for columbia and decca and is a favorite of those who like their music soft and sweet one of the most active conductors in radio and television he super vised shows on almost every major network another feature of the weekend will be the pledge banquet which will be held at the masonic temple on friday night welcome mat out at phi sig phi sigma kappa will open its new chapter house to the university tomorrow evening with an open house from 10 p.m to 2 a.m follow ing the navy wrestling meet preceding the open house from 2 to 4:30 p.m will be a closed cocktail party for the faculty alumni and members parents the house will be open in the evening with refreshments down stairs in the game room the up stairs living room replete with 2200 worth of wall-to-wall carpet ing will also be open but no drinks will be permitted in the room be cause of possible damage to the carpeting spring music festival wanted kellys sinatras be patient something will be done shortly said andrew j lit zcnberger director of buildings and grounds regarding the condition of eight st in front of the health center litzenberger explained that it is not a university road but be longs to the city of bethlehem which is responsible for paving and patching it the campus police department has already informed the city street commission of the poor shape the road is in said litzenberger and i he commissioner promised us full cooperation in doing something about it the commission is faced with the same problem all over the city ac cording to the director of buildings and grounds the reason for this is that the alternating freezing and thawing during the past few months has played havoc with the streets eighth st already has been patched twice during the school year the first time was in the fall when the city patched sec tions of it when the new dor mitory was completed the uni versity patched another section litzenberger said that he expects the city to have men on the job in the very near future until then he urged students to bear with the commission since they are very busy it was pointed out that it would have been foolish to fix the road sooner with the unpredictable wea ther girl struck by car of frosh improves easton last thursday she was taken to the easton hos pital where it was discovered that she had a skull fracture doctors performed emergency brain surgery that evening the little girl who is a fourth grade student at the franklin school in easton also suffered severe lacerations of the face according to echaus he was approaching the intersection of ferry and walnut sts and an other car was coming up the street in the opposite direction the girl darted out in back of the other car echaus related that he saw her too late to avoid hitting her she ran into the left side of his automobile echaus lived in dravo house at the beginning of last semester but then began commuting when he secured employment at easton he was going to work when the acci dent took place 1 pledge expected 7 came for dinner misinterpreting directions on how to pick up their bids seven fresh men caused members of theta kappa phi fraternity many anxious moments friday night when the house's rushing chairman went to pick up re turned bids he found to his consternation that all but one had been turned in about 5:30 p.m as brothers de jectedly waited to have a one-man pledge banquet the tide changed not one but seven appeared for din ner they explained they thought they were supposed to sign all bids and brothers wiped the last beads of perspiration from their brows soph fete mar 7 members of the class of 59 will hold their annual banquet thursday march 7 at hungarian hall tickets can be purchased from any member of the sophomore class carl schier class presi dent said that each living group will be contacted in the near future by the cabinet represen tative assigned to them dancers and singers are being called for auditions this sunday afternoon and evening in grace hall for parts in the 10th annual music festival scheduled for april 13-14 dancers from lehigh and the surrounding com munity including cedar crest college and mora vian college will be in the music room of grace hall at 2 p.m the singers will meet in the same place sunday evening at 7 p.m the dancers are primarily needed to charleston in part of the extravaganza tracing the history of the brown and white band according to tentative plans announced by the festival staff headed by bob crone berger 58 and bill murray 57 the singers will audition for female and male leads in the folk opera section of the three-day festival weekend mark twain's jumping frog set to music will be featured in this section of the program a working budget has received approval ac cording to prof albert rights faculty advisor and technical director of the festival and work is now continuing in the salt mines the festival organization's offices and stockrooms in grace hall in the past lehigh talent has made up the bulk of festival personnel according to rights and the more all-lehigh students make it the happier the festival organization will be indicated the faculty advisor production and technical personnel were summoned to the first festival smoker of the year last night in drown hall set ideas and organizational policies were discussed briefly rights commented at last night's meeting that the organization needs more freshmen and under classmen in the production and business end of the organization so as to assure festival of a strong nucleus for ensuing years this year's show has now definitely been set up as a phd from yale in the filed of theology and christian ethics he has served the christ church congregation since 1949 he also acts as the chaplain to episcopal faculty and students at vassar but still finds time to take part in re ligious conferences his schedule will include lectures to class sections and special dis cussion groups at the invitation of faculty members a faculty luncheon luncheon with the interfaith council and special seminar groups two fraternities will play host to the reverend after which he will participate in informal dis cussions he has also consented to be available
