by bob sterne over 25 years ago frank e myers dean of the graduate school then attending new york university had his name engraved on his slide rule by a unique artisan philip mil hendler today milhendler may be found plying his trade from college to college other lehigh personalities have encountered this craftsman in their undergraduate days dean preston parr studying at mit also had his slide rule per sonalized by milhendler philip milhendler started working in his present occupation in 1928 engraving fountain pens in new york city insurance offices soon however he began traveling to var ious universities and colleges when as he put it people started buying cheap fountain pens today he is a striking figure who may be found at many of the out standing engineering schools in the east with a full head of snow white hair milhendler's appearance is as interesting as his occupation just as interesting however voted to courses in engineering ma terials calculus economics physics and statistics in the junior and senior years group options are to be offered in tended to enable the student to cor relate his theoretical training with engineering practice or if he desires to carry a more intensive study of mathematics these group options will be in such subjects as structural egineering machine design and fluid flow upperclassmen must finish regis tration for the spring semester com pleted before they leave for be tween-semesters vacation according to james h wagner university registrar • as in the past the registra tion for sophomores juniors and seniors will be conducted dur ing the final examination period freshmen will register on tues day jan 29 grades will be sent to students at their homes on jan 25 and classes will resume jan 30 those students needing to make changes due to failing grades should do so on jan 28 since personnel will be busy reg istering frosh on the following day all registration will be conducted in packard lab 400 from 8 a.m to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m accord ing to the schedule printed below although this cannot be fol lowed in all instances the reg istrar would like those students who can to register within the designated time periods a bur see all page 6 the tenth arcadia bowed out wednesday night after voting to pay a 700 damage restitution bill to lafayette college from funds pre viously earlier in the same meet ing given to the student club finance committee the action followed the pass ing of a complete revision of the arcadia general finance act whereby 2600 from the arcadia reserve and contingency funds was turned over to scf a provision was made whereby the 700 as well as additional funds for establishing various organiza tions in the university center could be withdrawn from the 2600 fund dean congdon told the council that it is against the policy of the university for departments and arcadia to maintain reserve funds thus tying money up in different areas instead of in a central location a letter received by the uni versity from dean james of the easton school stated that the 700 figure would square the matter he added that a friend of lafayette had helped pay for restitution of other damages the total damage figure was rumored to exceed 2,000 in cluding damage to the football field with the letter were receipts of 700 in payment to two agencies for steam removal of paint from fisher field and other walls the letter stated that the damage figure had been lowered considerably and that the field superintendent hoped that grass roots damaged with salt would begin growing this spring in heated discussion prior to pass ing the payment bill some council members argued that lehigh may not have been obliged to pay since the annual peace pact was signed nov 7 after the damage had been done others agreed that lehigh had a moral obligation to pay gym classes and indians thieves strike other colleges the burglary of theta delta chi over the christmas holidays in which articles valued at 1,375 were taken was apparently just one of a wave of thefts that took place at colleges and universities in the le high valley while students were on vacation now as students return to classrooms police in allentown bethlehem and easton are re ceiving wholesale reports of robberies from schools in the valley allentown police say two fra ternity houses of muhlenberg col lege were visited and a long list of missing articles has been turned in by 15 students more reports are anticipated as students on extended leaves return targets at muhlenberg were the see fraternity page 8 prof john steckbeck see steckbeck page 4 played like a wildman despite the fact that his face was swathed in bandages after the game the syracuse cap tain went into the indians dress ing room to congratulate the player but to his surprise he found wauseka the assistant coach of car 7 lisle removing a mass of tape from his face the anecdotes also reveal the many hours of research that were put into the work every one credits the indians with be ing the first to use the hidden ball trick but the book points out that pop warner the in dians coach used it against cornell in 1898 while coaching at perm that was five years be fore it was used by the indians the book is the only one of its kind that has ever been published although reams of copy have been turned out about the individual players or seasons no one else has ever attempted the huge job of com piling all the data about the various commencing in september lehigh will inaugurate a new curriculum in the college of engineering lead ing to a b.s in engineering me chanics this will bring the number of curricula offered in this college to ten in line with the establishment of this new curriculum the faculty has approved the initia tion of several new courses in mechanics such as advanced mechanics of materials and mechanics of continua the advanced mechanics of ma terials course will cover the effects of types of forces on materials the course in mechanics of continua to be offered in two parts will cover such subjects as mechanics of de formable bodies equilibrium and comptaibility equations and appli cations to the solution of problems in elasticity and hydrodynamics in describing the new offerings the dean of the college of engin eering loyal v bewley said that the curriculum is especially designed for high grade analytical work in aircraft automotive and similar industries he also stated as being significant the fact that twice as much mathematics will be required as in other engineering curricula dean bewley pointed out that the new curriculum in engineer ing mechanics will be a highly scientific one it conforms well to the recommendations of the american society of engineering education for more basic and fundamental approaches in en gineering students enrolled in this curri culum will start with the uniform program for engineering freshmen their sophomore year will be de seniors of 58 class must sign for pictures members of the classes of febru ary 58 june 58 october 58 and february 59 who wish to be consid ered members of the senior class of 58 must sign up for a senior epi tome picture physical education prof steckbeck's first book fabulous redmen was published in 1951 a second the bronze men is due for publication in the near future fabulous redmen is a history of football at the famous indian school at carlisle pa it contains many old pictures and newspaper clippings of the famed indian team besides the history as written by steckbeck himself numerous anecdotes at the end of year ifc appointed a com mittee to investigate the various parties but according to ifc presi dent joe mooney although there were some violations they were not detected by the committee ifc passed the motion to give the houses full responsibility after a short discussion as to whether some houses would take advantage of the lack of student investigators and serve alcohol thus giving them an advantage over the dry parties at other houses it was decided to leave the enforcement to the integrity of the lehigh man the organiza tion did warn however that it will support all university regu lations and any violators detect rd by school officials will also be responsible to the ifc judi see after page 3 is the apparatus that this artisan uses named the engravograph it is a machine
