it is illegal for anyone licensed or not to sell or give intoxicating beverages to minors according to judge william g barthold's ruling in northampton county court mon day this ruling contradicts an op inion of the luzerne county court early this spring the luzerne court ruled that it is no offense to furnish liquor to minors unless the adult is con nected with a licensed bar the campus and all fraternities at lehigh are located in northamp ton county the ruling came in a case con cerning a man and woman 38 and 33 respectively in the wind gap area the couple is charged with furnishing a group of six boys and girls with liquor in discussing interpretation of the state liquor code forbidding giving or selling liquor to minors judge barthold ruled that this applies to more than licensees it applies to anyone who furnishes intoxicants to minors regardless of whether they are connected with a bar or not we declare unequivocally that defendants conduct in furnishing liquor to minors as established in the case before us affected public morals concerned with community and was a matter for investigation and punishment under the provis ions of the liquor control act stated barthold speaker heads college assn dr theodore a distler executive director of the association of amer ican colleges will deliver the com mencement address at the 78th founder's day exercises sunday when 110 students will receive their baccalaureate diplomas at the ceremony in packer memorial church president mar tin d whitaker will confer de grees upon 70 senior students who completed their studies during the summer sessions and 40 advanced students who are eligible for master's degrees the exercises will honor judge asa packer founder of the univer sity and mark the 91st anniver sary of lehigh's establishment dr distler has been active in the service of higher education for three decades he served on the faculty and staff of new york university from 1922 through 1934 when he was appointed dean of lafayette college in 1941 he was elected presi dent of franklin and marshall college and served in that capacity until 1954 when he was named chairman of the depart ment of civil defense common wealth of pennsylvania in the summer of 1954 he was named to his present position prizes and honors will be awarded by dr wray h congdon dean of students and commissions in the see headon collision saturday after noon on route 611 six miles north of mount pocono driver of the car was rich ard lyncheski 20 of throop pa he suffered a broken pelvis severe facial cuts and possible internal injuries a specialist had to be flown to monroe county general hospital east strcudsburg to take part in a three hour operation to save lyncheski's life originally list ed as guarded lyncheski's condition is now improved also in monroe county general hospital is james newton 18 of homer n.y his injuries consisted of cuts of the left eye concussion and shock his condition is also list see 2 page 5 suspensions for one or more semesters were assessed 12 students for infractions of university regulations during the 1955-56 school year ac cording to a report issued by the disciplinary committee through the office of the dean of students the students were also given five dis ciplinary demerits suspensions were given to one junior and one sophomore for po ssession and use of alcoholic beverages in residence halls one sopho more was disciplined for flagrant plagiarism five freshmen received suspensions for disorderly conduct and prop erty destruction and four freshmen received the same penalty for dis orderly conduct and trespassing two seniors were assessed foui demerits for houseparty violations and were reported to their national fraternity eighteen other students were reprimanded warned and as sessed three disciplinary demer its for violations including the possession of alcohol in dormi tories tampering with excuse slips and houseparty violations two fraternities were placed or social probation one for one yeai for violation of houseparty regu lations and another until nov 15 for unsatisfactory houseparty regu lations disciplinary contest for the second year running the yearbook emerged in the top group of 271 college annuals the epitome was one of four all-american winners in its class of schools from 2,001 to 4,000 enrollment using letterpress printing twenty colleges were entered in this class to gain all-american rating 4,000 points were needed the epitome was given 4,400 points cniy twice in its 80-year his tory has the epitome reached this summit editor-in-chief of the 1956 epitome was ferdinand thun 56 f bruce waechter 56 editor-in-chief of the 1955 epitome which was the first to win the all-american award in the book's long history was asso ciate editor of the 1956 edition judging the lehigh book was mrs fran compton who gave the an nual lavish praise particularly high praise was accorded the advertising
