engineers of lehigh valley plan big time stickmen to play swarthmore next vol xxx no 51 arts and science club holds interesting meet many meetings scheduled for month of may university is center of activities prof b l miller and a j bar thold 18 give good talks election of officers lehigh team in fine condition for her first league game of season new englanders have had an enviable season being de feated only once mustard and cheese association to take part in concert at hotel bethlehem phenominal batting of visitors spells disaster for lehigh nine early in game o'neil is optimistic dance after concert lees will pitch lehigh held scoreless recent performance of team augurs well for the brown and white brown and white club clearly outclassed by the crack vir ginian team the combined musical clubs af ter several weeks of comparative in activity are now planning a concert to be given at hotel bethlehem on friday evening may 18th there will be several special features on which the clubs are now working besides the regular numbers sev eral members of mustard and cheese fame will render selections which are especially clever john ny opdyke who has been so pop ular for his stage work will enter tain as well as babcock dorton and fritz lewis besides these the mandolin club and the quar tette are practicing new numbers which will be pleasing up to the present time the musi cal clubs have given concerts at several of the popular schools in the vicinity and a three-day run at the grand opera house of bethle hem harry litke business man ager of the clubs has also arranged several more in the near future the concert the eighteenth will be unusually entertaining and will be followed by dancing in the ball room of the hotel bethlehem the monthly meeting of the arts and science club was held last wednesday evening and the fol lowing officers were elected for next year — president r a heckert vice-president h r greer sec retary w w kammerer treasu rer m e bishop all of the class of 24 after the conclusion of the elections the club was addressed by prof b l miller whose topic was the comparison of american and european student life prof miller confined his talk to observations that he had actually made while abroad and thus estab lished points of interest that revised a number of popular but fake be liefs regarding european student life in concluding his talk he read excerpts from several letters writ ten by students of the universities he had visited and containing ac counts of the existing conditions a pleasant surprise for the older members of the dub was afforded by the presence of a j barthold 18 who has recently returned from france and who once taught french at lehigh mr barthold gave some of his impressions of french stu dent life the meeting was concluded with general discussion and the serving of refreshments the strong holy cross nine is next on the brown and white's baseball schedule the game to be played at worcester to-morrow af ternoon they have a remarkable record behind them and an almost unbeatable team holy cross has been defeated only once this year and then by princeton the tigers scoring the only run of the game georgetown suffered her first de feat in two years at the hands of holy cross and it was a 5 to 1 wallop at that the new england ers also have defeated such teams as the quantico marines catholic university dartmouth and villa nova holy cross's biggest asset is their boy pitcher owen carroll j thos keady former lehigh coach said of him that boy canroll is one of the greatest college pitchers i have ever seen although he has two more years at college i understand that he has been offered a contract of 10,000 a year for three years by detroit the blue and white has a wonderful fielder in dugan while simonder and cote are the batting stars the third annual meeting of the engineers club of the lehigh val ley will be held in lehigh univer sity gymnasium monday may 7th the bethlehem steel male chorus of ninety voices john t watkins director will sing the speakers will be o m graves of the gen eral crushed stone company of easton w s hutchin^on of the bethlehem fabricators inc of this city ; and a third speaker to be from allentown a substantial lunch will be served in the gymnasium at 9 :. 1 5 o'clock the lehigh valley section of the american chemical society will hold its annual meeting and picnic at saylor's lake june 2nd dr hugh s taylor professor of phy sical chemistry of princeton will speak at easton the evening of may 11th the mext meeting of the lehigh valley section of the american so ciety of civil engineers will be held monday may 14th in the physics building c e chase principal assistant engineer of the delaware river bridge joint commission will be the speaker and he will have the delaware river bridge as his subject continued on page four the lehigh valley chapter of the american society for steel civils on week's inspection tour net team meets george washington saturday lehigh trackmen meet drexel here lehigh press club started wednesday twenty seniors left wednesday to inspect engineering featur es of philadelphia brown and white men are in good condition for tilt with philadelphians tomorrow track being repaired lehigh did not play on wednes day afternoon on the college courts per schedule as the fort dupont team did not arrive the next match for the lehigh netmen is against the strong george washington team and from all ad vance dope the brown and white men will have their work cut out for them this saturday when they meet this southern five on the le high courts the visitors who will arrive on saturday have been bad ly defeated by the navy but never theless they are coming to bethle hem with a well-balanced team and one which should make the lehigh aggregation work for every point railroad society to hold meeting tonight to-morrow afternoon coach o'neil's stick proteges will meet the swarthmore lacrosse team at swarthmore the game is called for 3 o'clock promptly after the fine showing the team made last saturday afternoon against the rut gers team and from the way prac tices the past week have been pro gressing lehigh should be in a po sition to give swarthmore a severe trouncing as this is the first league game for the brown and white this season the team has been hard at work this last week in preparation for it swarthnioire has been defeated by johns hopkins also a member of the southern division league and by the army who defeated them 10 to 1 after a poor start the le high stick artists seem to have found their stride and are on the road to another championship coach bill o'neil has kept the defense intact using brewer and greer at point and cover-point re spectively with springsteen mor gan and darsie playing the defense positions the playing of the de fense has been very steady and there is little cause for worry from that quarter schwimmer a freshman from brooklyn who has had lacrosse ex perience has been showing up very well in the scrimmage this past week and has kept the varsity scor ing low the best attack combination is bill o'neil's big question the coach has been using muzdakis and bradley for the home jobs with mckenzie packenham and groner on the attack and with fullard at center however mitman mitch ell hewitt geyer and abel are looming up well and are liable to pull down a steady berth on the attack the scrimmages this week have been the best of the season and very hotly contested the competition is very strong and the men have to put lots of pep in their game to keep in the running the attack is developing and bet ter all-around teamwork has been witnessed this past week than at any time before the possibilities for lehigh to win to-morrow are very good and as many men as possible should try to make the trip and see the game the game will be called promptly at 3 o'clock daylight-saving time on the athletic field at swarthmore the lineup had piled up a total of 16 runs to the local players 0 the visitors buried lehigh under a total of 19 base-hits to the brown and white's two and piled up a total oi 24 bases pete dußois twirled for the brown and white the full seven innings and compared to his no-hit no-run record against seton hall on saturday did not do so well the west virginia players hit his slants at every turn every man on the vis iting team getting at least one hit and scoring a run lehigh's sup port also was weak and slow the brown and white committed five errors three of which were on pri or's score the outfield however was working at its best rogers and merrill saved the day several times by catching rather mean flies bessemer was playing the old-time ball although he let one grounder slip by him that would have meant an out for the west virginia nine woods pitched wonderful ball only twice during the game did lehigh hit the mound sm an and them only for one base a-piece the mountaineers were all heavy hitters on wednesday lytle leading the team with four hits west vir ginia's infield was exceptionally fast and accurate at throwing many a lehigh man was put out at first due to the whirlwind speed of wed nesday for a week's inspection tour of the various engineering features in philadelphia the party which is in charge of prof payrow is making its headquarters at the ho tel walton immediately after arriving in philadelphia they visited the phila delphia & reading terminal yards and signal towers covering also the richmond docks early on thurs day morning the party went to see the immense south street bridge which was erected at a cost of 700,000 after spending several hours there they next inspected the delaware river bridge where large concrete caissons were being sunk the method of handling these huge masses of concrete was very novel and the party remained upon the scene until moon lunch was had at the engineers club prof w h kavanaugh lehigh 94 and sev eral members of the delaware bridge engineering department were the guests of the students most of the afternoon was spent at the sears roebuck building in specting the general construction and heating and ventilating system this morning prof payrow and his party visited harbor improve ments by boat in the afternoon they visited the plants of the new york shipbuilding corporation and the victor talking machine com pany at camden n j to-morrow the future engineers will inspect several large tank works in the city to-morrow afternoon the brown and white track team will act as hosts to the runners from the drex el institute of philadelphia the meet will be held on the upper field beginning at 3 o'clock this will be the second home meet of the year and judging from reports of the strength of the drexel team the meet should be one of the season's best the track has been under re pair for the last week and should be very fast if it remains dry the meet to-morrow will be the second of the season for drexel they defeated the philadelphia col lege of osteopathy on their home field two weeks ago and some very fast times were made although it was run on a one-fifth of a mile track instead of the regulation quar ter-mile among the men who will represent drexel is johnny board man a former lehigh two-miler the meet will be slightly differ ent from others in two respects namely there will be no 120-yard high present junior membership of the association will elect officers for the remainder of this year and freshmen and sophomores will try out for membership elections of members will be held next fall from
