un 6-0331 grade averages improve in spring bethlehem pa thursday july 7 1955 lehigh university brown and white neville speaks at grad convo vol 66 — no 52 summer university pool is open to all in lehigh family all lehigh students and faculty including visiting summer school students may seek relief from the summer heat in the jacobs memo rial pool in taylor gym the pool will be opened at 2:30 p.m and remain open until 5:30 each afternoon during school days red cross instruct ors bruce bryant 57 and dave gallaher 56 will be present to assist swimmers all facilities including locker rooms will be available to swim mers under the same regulations as apply during the regular school year university health regulations must be complied with for swimmers health and comfort no masks may be worn since this is prohibited by pennsyl vania state law students are reminded that no one may enter the pool unless there is at least one other person in the room the first of two special assemblies for graduate students in education at the summer sessions will be held at 9:40 tomorrow morning in the au ditorium of packard laboratory dean harvey a neville of the graduate school will be the principal speaker at this first as sembly tomorrow's morning courses in education have been re-scheduled to free students from 9:40 to 10:40 in order that they may attend this as sembly the program has been ar ranged particularly for educators but other students in summer school are invited to attend the morning education courses will meet from 8:20 to 9:30 and from 10:50 to 12:00 tomorrow dean neville who is also di rector of the universtiy's insti tute of research will speak to the educators on science for curiosity and science for re ward the second of the two assemblies will take place on friday july 22 dr h a neville it will consist of a panel discussion on the subject outstanding prob lems in modern education panel participants will be selected later from the roster of education summer sessions visiting professors senior class gift hits 15-year low the all-university scholastic average which dropped last fall to a 2.020 low point since the war showed an improvement in the spring semester gaining 089 to bring it to 2.109 ah 10 student class and residence group classifications improved their averages in the spring over the fall semester this gain com pletely reversed the fall 54 picture when all 10 groups averages were lower than in the spring of 54 for the sixth consecutive semester leonard hall residents scored top honors among the 62 living groups ranking number one with 2.780 on the averages list released by registrar james h wagner theta chi placed second on the list and was first among the 30 frater nities with 2.513 topping two-semester top fraternity tau delta phi in the third place again was delta chi with an average of 2.475 down from 2.600 the senior class all fraternity men the junior class and all-town men averages exceeded the all-university average this spring as they did in last fall's averages all non-fraternity dorm men all non-fra ternity men all dorm men the sophomore class and the freshman class fell below the all-university figure the senior class with an average of 2.498 and a gain of 137 had the highest class average for the 12th semester in a row and placed between second and third place groups the seniors reached a five-semester peak in the spring of 53 with 2.589 the largest increase was that of the senior class next highest rise was the sophomore's 134 gain to 2.051 third highest gain was the all-town group which upped its average 106 to 2.111 other gains were all non-fraternity 084 to 2.063 all non-fraternity dorm men 089 to 2.076 all-university 089 to 2.109 all fraternity 066 to 2.158 all dormitory 050 to 2.035 junior class 028 to 2.122 and freshman class 048 to 1.886 leonard hall's 2.780 average last semester represented a slight drop from the 2.868 figure achieved in the fall semester in the spring of 53 the hall achieved first place with a record 3.033 average the entire university average has fluctuated considerably since its five semester peak in the spring of 53 of 2.201 it dropped to released recently by samuel h missimer 50 chairman of the undergraduate contact committee with a total graduating class of 453 including both february and june graduations the above figure represents 35.7 per cent participation in the fund to date lowest previous year was 1940 when only 25.2 per cent signed up fifty-seven students graduated in february of that number eight participated in the glass gift fund representing 14 per cent of the total number of graduates of the 473 june graduates 190 subscribed to the fund representing a total of 40.1 per cent all of the above figures were reported in the annual alumni association report issued recently it is a function of the undergraduate contact commit tee to promote the class memorial gift program the senior class gift operates as directory info received from 13,170 preparation of a new lehigh alumni directory will get under way this summer it was decided at the annual meeting of the alumni asso ciation last month information for the directory has been received from 13,170 of the 16,245 alumni the resignation of david m dockham from the lehigh universi ty athletic staff was announced tuesday afternoon by p l sadler director of intercollegiate athletics dockham relinquishes his le high post as varsity backfield coach varsity lacrosse coach and assistant swimming coach to become the lehigh valley representative of the new york investment firm p w brooks and co his resignation is the second from the grid coaching staff in three months william g whitton varsity end coach for four campaigns re signed in april to accept a coaching appointment at princeton university robert chiodi former university of maryland wingman who has been coaching at the richmond in diana high school was named as successor to whitton in announcing dockham's res ignation sadler said that candi dates will be interviewed next week william b leckonby head football coach said that no applications have yet been received dockham joined the lehigh staff in 1947 after coaching at his alma mater springfield college spring coach david dockham field mass he served here as as sistant football and swimming coach for the past seven years he succeeded william sheri dan as lacrosse coach in the spring of 1948 four years ago he was named to the coaching staff of the north squad for the annual ail-american lacrosse game a native of fitchburg mass he served as backfleld coach at the united states naval air station peru indiana during world war n although everyone — including the weatherman — was expecting another hot 4th of july it looked more like the middle of january on the lehigh campus our alert photographer who was on his way to classes saturday snapped the above picture from the library steps hundreds of summer session students
