sex present to enjoy annual spring festivities beale was only lehigh man de feated in singles doubles break even lees in fine form lehigh one-mile team is one of six entrants for middle states championship here until sunday dr richards to speak carol also entered president will submit report on his survey of lehigh and re commend improvements timely hitting by hess in ninth inning brings in two runs which tie the score the lehigh netmen came through with another victory yesterday when they took over the perm team by the scojre of 4 to 2 all of the matches were hard fought fritz mercur played a nice game when he defeated mor gan by the handy score of 6 to 4 6to 3 rod beck had little trou ble with his man as he won both of his matches by the scores of 6 to 0 6to 2 beale did not fare so well as he was defeated by the score of 6t01,0t06 6 to 3 koegler de feated steele 6 to 4 7 to 5 the brown and white men split even in the honors for the doubles perm came through with one dou bles while lehigh also won one summary : — singles — mercur defeated mor gan 6t04,6 to 3 beck defeated jones 6to 0 6to 2 brown de feated beale 6 to 1 0 to 6 6 to 3 koegleir defeated steele 6 to 4 7 to 5 doubles — mqrcur and beck de feated morgan and jones 6 to 4 9to 7 steele and brown defeated beale and koegler 6 to 4 10 to 8 following the baseball game to morrow afternoon our fair house party guests will be entertained by a hotly-contested lacrosse game with the rutgers team next to lafay ette rutgers has been for several years lehigh's biggest rival in ath letics nothing much is known about the rutgers team but from previous contests the game promises to be pretty evenly matched the past week has been one of hard work for the brown and white team many of the weak points which showed up last saturday in the game with the midshipmen have been corrected during the stiff scrimmages this week the team is in fine physical shape and there are no men who will be forced to sit on the bench due to injuries coach o'neill has not decided on the line-up for the game but the men who will probably get in the game for part of the time at least are as follows kutzleb morgan greer springsteen brewer darsie fullard buck packenham jones biradiley mittman abel coxe mc bride cusick huyette griihn mc kemzie and muzdakis soph banquet surprises frosh 1925 cotillion was gala affair freshmen arrive at scene too late to interfere with plans of sophomores drown hall transformed into a veritable egypt by lavish decorations record attendance excellent music lehigh's annual alumni day ex ercises will be held this year on sat urday june the 9th and all alumni class banquets will be held upon the evening of the same day chief among the events upon the program for that day is the presentation of dr richards's report of his survey of lehigh university and his rec ommendations for improvements following the presentation of dr richards's report the alumni council report will be discussed at the annual alumni meeting in order that the two reports mentioned above may further that goal for which dr richards is striving and to whose ultimate at tainment the alumni have pledged their efforts a meeting of the new ly organized alumni council will be held or may l?tli and 12th in bethlehem this council is com posed of delegates from each club and class and acts in the capacity of an executive committee the object of this earlier meeting is a presentation in full of dr rich ards's survey and recommendations this report will then be discussed and the executive council will a gree upon those features which are to be submitted for general ap proval by the whole alumni body these matters alone will then be presented at the alumni day exer cises this presentation of recommen dations is by far the most impor tant of the events which is sched uled for the alumni day exercises since upon the outcome depends the success of the tentative campaign for a lehigh endowment fund the usual program of events how ever will not be neglected and plans are being perfected for the costuming of the various classes and the pairade of the reunion of classes junior prom will hold sway tonight the superiority of brain over brawn was demonstrated in the vic tory of the sophs over the fresh men at the formeir banquet last monday at the burton restaurant the sophomores to all intents and purposes were scheduled to spring the feast wednesday even ing and the yearlings were all ready to meet the second-year men in mortal combat and break up the banquet after the frosh had answered to a false alarm the thursday before their blood was up and the sophs were supposedly doomed all pledged themselves that there should be no banquet wednesday consequently there was great consternation among the ranks when on monday afternoon the word was passed that the banquet was to be that night so great was the unbelief and the thought of turning out again to a false alarm that only a handful of freshmen appeared at the burton at 5 o'clock to find the windows lined with sophomores the surprise was complete it is nothing short of remarkable that the secret was kept so closely the tickets were printed for wedv nesday april 25th but the actual date was monday the 23rd at 5 o'clock of that day the sophs met in a body at the bethlehem steel athletic field and marched to the banquet ready for a scrap but they were destined to be disappoint ed as the news had not yet spread i around continued on page four once in a burst of over-enthu siasm the frosh rushed at several that lehigh house parties have lost none of their popularity is con vincingly proven by the large num ber of guests present for the week end gaieties classes mingled with dances do not seem to dampen the enthusiasm of the students estella fox of the lehigh baseball nine won a hard fought game from swarth more on wednesday afternoon by the close score of 3to 2 the game was nip and tuck until the sixth in ning when the quakers scored two runs the score stood at that fig ure until the last half of the ninth inning when in a thrilling eleventh hour rally the brown and white tied the score in an extra inning the local players scored an addition al run and won the game wednesday was the first time that the lehigh players showed real con sistent ball-playing throughout an entire game johnny lees was back at top form and twirled like a veteran he struck out eight garnet batters five of them being in the first three innings the brown and white infield seemed greatly improved by the inclusion of hess and meldinger mellinger was perhaps a bit slow but he was a steady and reliable player ad ams played a great game at first snatching several wild throws from the air adams and hess were the batting stars of the day it was really hess that won the game when he poled a one-bagger in the ninth and brought in two runs lippincott a new moundsman for the quakers pitched a very credit able game until the ninth inning he held the brown and white lads under his thumb there only being one possible chance for lehigh to score before that time but the strain proved a bit too great and at the last he became rattled the garnet infield was snappy and well co-ordinated there were a few er rors and these few were taken ad vantage of by the lehigh players to gain bases and to score lees began the game with a strike-out ersey made first but was left there adams got to sec ond on a fumble by cornell but was caught off the bag in the sec ond the quakers were out in one two three order for lehigh mer rill reached second on two errors but was left there during the third inning lees fanned three of swarthmore's men and when le high came to bat not a man reach ed first in the fourth ersey poled a two bagger to center and reached third on a wild ball by lees but due to bessemer's clever head-work he died there prior got to first on hotterer's fumble and slid to sec ond while adams was at bat har wi made first base on a pop to short and prior slid third lees walked but merrill and bessemer were out baker reached first on a hit to right at the beginning of the fifth frame and got as far as third when the side was events of the year for the brown and white trackmen will be the perm relays to-day and to-morrow on franklin field in philadelphia the one-mile relay team will compete in the middle atlantic states cham pionship class a against lafay ette johns hopkins swarthmore bucknell and rutgers of the teams entered in this event lafay ette and johns hopkins will prob ably present the most competition lafayette was very successful in their indoor races in the one-mile event and the same team will rep resent them on friday johns hop kins also possesses a team which will make a strong bid for honors although rutgers won the quarter mile run last saturday they are not considered overly strong and it is very probable that springsteen would have won if he had not fall en bucknell and swarthmore are the dark horses and little is known of their teams the trials for the lehigh entries were held on wednesday afternoon and the team will be composed of : burgess croll leister and spring steen with lodge as substitute the list represents the order in which the men finished burgess winning in 55 seconds flat although the time is a second or so slower than previous times of this year it must be taken into consideration that there was a stiff wind blowing up the back stretch which seriously handicapped the runners the team will line up with lafayette at the pole and lehigh sixth from the pole in addition to the one-mile relay there are four men entered in indi vidual events jose carol one of the best sprinters who has ever rep resented the brown and white will compete in the 100-yard dash in this event there are some sixty en tries but carol is considered as having an excellent chance to come through with flying colors in two indoor meets he placed first and second respectively against excep tionally fast competition in shorter dashes he is considerably faster in the hundred than in the shorter dashes and in the two dual meets has emerged victor each time by a large margin although entered in other events besides the century on saturday all his efforts will be concentrated in this one race and the prospects of his placing among the first three are extremely bright siegmund is entered in the special two-mile run and will compete a gainst the leading two-milers of the country each week he has lowered his time considerably and expects to run one of the best races of his career on saturday and the chances of his securing a place are good burlingame is entered in the broad jump and sanford in the hop step and jump and both these men have outside chances of placing every man on the relay team has been working faithfully and it is hoped that their efforts and train ing will be rewarded in this im portant meet the spring house party was for mally opened last evening to the tuneful music of bennie kreuger's famous cotton pickers who offi ciated for the annual sophomore cotillion the affair was a very enjoyable one and the floor was crowded with the members of the cotillion and upperclassmen deter mined to initiate the fain house party guests into a lehigh good time the committees arranging the dance had several surprises which were exceptionally pleasing upon entering drown hall the guests were transported to the land of pyramids by the lavish decora tions which were strictly a la king tut the stairway leading to the upper floor was decoirated with egyptian pillars swords and minia ture camels the ceiling of the ball room was covered with bril liantly-colored drapes at the cen ter of the stage was an immense sphinx with a desert background the programs for the occasion were very attractive being of brown leather on which was stamp ed the university seal in gold all the other details were equally well looked after and the dance will be remembered by everyone attending as one of the best of the week-end as well as the most enjoyable social event of the year the orchestra was on the stage this allowing more additional floor space for dancing mr sphinx gazed with an approving smile upon the two hundred couples present the whole atmosphere was one of youthful jollity and books were for the present forgotten to-night the interest of alii le high is centered in the junior prom this the second night's festivity of the spring house party gives ev ery promise of outdoing any dance ever staged in dirown hall the dance is in the hands of a junior class committee composed of f t bumbaugh chairman r h allan a b say re j m degoan and r j buck this committee has spared neither time nor money to make this dance a genuine success to-morrow night the college dance in drawn hall will wind up the spring house party festivities the music will be furnished by ed wittstein's orchestra of new haven connecticut the dance is house party was for mally opened last evening to the tuneful music of bennie kreuger's famous cotton pickers who offi ciated for the annual sophomore cotillion the affair was a very enjoyable one and the floor was crowded with the members of the cotillion and upperclassmen deter mined to initiate the fain house party guests into a lehigh good time the committees arranging the dance had several surprises which were exceptionally pleasing upon entering drown hall the guests were transported to the land of pyramids by the lavish decora tions which were strictly a la king tut the stairway leading to the upper floor was decoirated with egyptian pillars swords and minia ture camels the ceiling of the ball room was covered with bril liantly-colored drapes at the cen ter of the stage was an immense sphinx with a desert background the programs for the occasion were very attractive being of brown leather on which was stamp ed the university seal in gold all the other details were equally well looked after and the dance will be remembered by everyone attending as one of the best of the week-end as well as the most enjoyable social event of the year the orchestra was on the stage this allowing more additional floor space for dancing mr sphinx gazed with an approving smile upon the two hundred couples present the whole atmosphere was one of youthful jollity and books were for the present forgotten to-night the interest of alii le high is centered in the junior prom this the second night's festivity of the spring house party gives ev ery promise of outdoing any dance ever staged in dirown hall the dance is in the hands of a junior class committee composed of f t bumbaugh chairman r h allan a b say re j m degoan and r j buck this committee has spared neither time nor money to make this dance a genuine success to-morrow night the college dance in drawn hall will wind up the spring house party festivities the music will be furnished by ed wittstein's orchestra
