last year's ceremo nies presentation of awards in recognition of student leadership scholarship and sportsmanship at this year's flagpole ceremonies will be on wednesday starting at 11:30 a.m flagpole ceremony cuts class periods rhc suggests lh board plan elects officers an editorial see editorial page 2 the editorial board of the brown and white reaf firming its faith in lehigh university as a superior educational institution pledged this newspaper last saturday to purchase three shares in the new uni versity center-dormitory campaign fund with a total value of 540 the shares will be acquird by the b&w within the prescribed time limit of two and a half years that the university center and dormitory are need ed seems obvious but lehigh is a privately-endowed school with limited although rapidly expanding re sources how then should the necessary funds be acquired the new center is for the lehigh man it will house his activities as well as provide dining and meeting facilities ity contributing to the fund the lehigh man can help to make an old dream become a reality unfortunately few undergraduates are financially able to purchase a full share personally but fraterni ties and other groups could certainly afford to contract for at least one share the cost per man would be an insignificant five cents per week in a thirty-man group before others are asked to give it is important that the undergraduates show their enthusiasm by contri buting perhaps arcadia combined with the 16-man committee could contribute a share other organiza tions might combine funds for a share alumni who are reaping the benefits of their lehigh education should certainly contribute nor are resi dents and merchants of the community excluded since they reap generous harvests of culture from the very presence of the university in the community it is obvious that merchants who derive much income from the local area packer hall-dor mitory campaign to raise 425,000 by june 1 toward the national goal of at least 2,200,000 opened thurs day evening in the ballroom of the hotel bethlehem with some 350 fund raisers in attendance leaders of the student orga nizations faculty administra tion and alumni feasted on shrimp and roast beef with the cliff clefs serenading between courses and then heard presi dent martin d whitaker say we must give our great facul ty and great student body excel lent facilities what president whitaker meant by competition was perhaps an swered by paul j franz assistant to the president in the fifth and final talk of the evening when he said we are now competing with the ivy league plus m.1.t rensse laer and carnegie tech dr whitaker who was intro duced by john k conneen 30 chairman of the local drive and toastmaster for the evening also pointed out that the con tracts wree let for a little more than we expected so don't fear going over the top explaining the advantages of let ting the contracts before all the money had been raised work has already started at the dormitory site he stated that by starting con struction now the new dormitory to accommodate 294 students should see need page 4 leith initiates 31 into phi beta kappa society presentation of awards in recognition of student leadership scholarship and sportsmanship will take place at flagpole day ceremonies the only official assembly during the year for the entire student body at 11:40 tomorrow morning in order to permit full attendance classes have been rescheduled end ing at 11:20 in the morning with afternoon classes beginning at 1:40 classes will be only 40 minutes ions folio wine this schedule 8:10 8:50 9-9:40 9:50-10:30 10:40 11:20 flagpole exercises will be held from 11:40 to 12:30 and will be followed by the lunch hour afternoon classes will be at 1:30 2:30 and 3:20 recipients of the dean's service award the bosey reiter leadership cup and the residence halls council awards will be announced at least one award will be presented for each sport along with the varsity l cup for the best all-around athlete senior class president donald h dimmick will pass the cane to the new president of the class of 56 in traditional ceremonies ralph ham ilton past president of arcadia will give a greeting to the new president f bruce waechter the program as usual is being arranged by arcadia an outstanding member of the class of 55 selected by a group of juniors will be presented the arcadia student service award in the event of rain ceremonies will be held in packard auditorium since this is the only opportunity for the entire student body to as semble at one time all are urged to attend recommendations for the solution of the parking problems the sugges ion of a board plan for lamberton hall and setting up the mchanics of the new freshman dorm were the subjects of the last meeting for the semester of the residence hall com mittee last tuesday in a special meeting of the residence section presidents last monday thomas b morgan 56 was elected rhc president for 1955-56 r gail monroe 56 was chosen secretary in the regular meeting of the rhc tuesday night it was recommended by the parking committee that to help solve the emergency parking problem the university convert the area between richards and drinker into a temporary parking lot also dscussed was the idea of banning all freshman cars but no action was taken also they decided to eliminate all house tickets and to replace them with official rhc parking tickets a uniform system of service see thomas page 3 55 epitome ready get yours at drown after the initiation milo cahn david s sidikman william e zeiter john see grunbaum page 3 pops concert reservations still available close to 200 of the approximately 800 available table reservations for the annual pops concert may 28 had been taken by sunday evening ac cording to prof william h schempf head of the music department schempf urged groups who have not reserved a table to do so soon as there have never been enough to go around reservations may be obtained daily at the music department by letter or in person a charge of 50 cents per person is being see 3 star page 3 under the leadership of john d leith associate dean of students the beta chapter of phi beta kappa ini tiated 31 men into its ranks sunday afternoon in drown hall dean leith who is president of the chapter conducted the initiation ceremony he was as sisted by the officers of the group preston parr assistant director of the institute of re search vice-president glenn j christensen assistant dean of the college of arts and science secretary and carl l moore as sistant professor of accounting treasurer the 1955 epitome will be distri buted in drown hall tomorrow im mediately following flagpole day ceremonies this sets the approxi mate time for distribution shortly after noon the yearbooks will be avail able at each of the doorways to the arcadia room on the first floor of drown to those who have already made the full pay ment the distribution at the door will be divided alphabetically with those with last names in the first half of the alphabet receiving their books at the left hand door and those in the last half at the right hand entrance exact alphabetical designations for each door will be posted tomorrow seniors will pick up their copies on wednesday after 1 p.m and thursday from jim gleckner in the room across the hall from the arca dia office those who have not paid the whole cost of the book and those who desire to buy a book and have made no payment whatso ever may purchase their books at a table in the drown hall lounge the price of these books will be 5.30 approximately 50 books are on hand for this pur pose the distribution will continue un til 6 pm tomorrow then from 9 a.m to 5 pm
