of applause when miss letowt finished her scene as emily joe taylor jr.'s nurse trying to hail a taxi with her frustrated statement aw hell i'll walk william murray in the lead role of joe taylor jr the doc tor's son who goes to the big town chicago to build up his fortune at the prompting of his wife was well cast along with robert carrasquillo charlie townsend he had the finest male voice of the actors to the audience his voice as well as that of the others was weak but the acoustics in grace hall allegro wedding . . . hypnotist to baffle sclers friday nite by mark evans les elgart and his band will set the mood for springtime in the south at the spring houseparty dance on friday night april 29 elgart leads a modern ensemble that reflects the tastes of young dancing america and receives billing as the band with the dancing sound modern music as played by the band does not mean the self conscious distortion of many of the progressive bands it simply means a good solid beat unmistakably different in its sound the band avoids piano and places extra emphasis on the guitar brother larry elgart one of the country's finest alto saxophonists leads the sax section with an un usually wide range of dynamics and color the section can be intimate as in its number sophisticated swing or forceful and swinging as in the hubie wheeler original the tur tle walk the elgart brass with its frequent feature of trombones in unison is sharp and biting known in the music business as the trumpet player's trumpet play er elgart had no long hard climb to success before he started his own band elgart was a featured trumpet player with bunny berigan charlie spivak harry james woody herman hal mc intyre and billy butterfield he was featured in the movie wintertime with sonja henie and played with raymond scott on cbs he also appeared on the ed see ensemble page 7 pi delt begins student survey the lehigh man survey which is designed to aid the brown and white the epitome and wlrn was distributed to members of pi delta epsilon national honorary journalism fraternity last thurs day the nine-page project which was drawn up principally by mahlon b simon jr editor of the brown and white and also chairman of the lehigh man committee of pi delta epsilon includes questions as to brand preference and expenditure the more than 30 members of the honorary will take 30 surveys each with a total of 786 taken altogether the first-page includes personal information about the person being surveyed including height weight age status in relation to the opposite sex father's occupation and other such material it also includes ques tions designed to determine what section of the b&w is best read page two of the important project includes information on student housing places most frequented for those not living in groups which supply food and for weekends in regard to those that live in such groups is also asked amount spent is also requested in samples taken last week by several pi delt members the see pi delt page 3 dr franz polgar hypnotist and telepathist extraordinaire will present his miracles of the mind program under the sponsorship of the stu dent concerts-lectures series committee friday at 8 p.m in grace hall undergraduates will be admitted free upon presentation of id cards while general admission seats will go for 1 at the registrar's office season ticket holders will also be granted free admission the internationally-known hynotist who has baffled and amazed the lehigh campus on two previous en gagements was titled america's bur sienkiewicz time and effort were far from wasted on the 1955 music festival's production of allegro richard rodgers and oscar hammerstein ll's controversial musical more than 2,200 jammed grace hall in a sell-out crowd saturday night and every one of them was rewarded by prof al bert a rights excellent produc tion this was surely one of the best shows that lehigh has ever staged this critic could find little wrong with the production with the excep tion of some trivial points and the fact that somebody goofed when a bouquet was presented to friday's leading lady at saturday's curtain call incidentally the cast took five curtain calls at the finale cohan's tavern to be m&c's hp offering the tavern by george m co han is slated as mustard and cheese's contribution to the 55 spring houseparty featured as one of the ma jor attractions of the april 29 may 1 weekend the play will be given on both friday and saturday nights one of the hundred plays written by the famous composer actor and writer the tavern is a mystery comedy the leading lady virginia will be played by elisabeth greene wife of omar grene 55 she will be remembered by some as elisa beth mackeeby who as a student at cedar crest played the role of ly dia in m&c's 1951 production of the rivals ruth whitcomb wife of dr lau rence whitcomb will be in the role of the governor's wife mrs whit comb was last seen as mrs dudgeon in the devil's disciple the role of sally is being cre ated by betsy platon wife of julian platon 56 she last ap peared with m&c in cyrano de bergerac the mysterious wo see cohan's page 6 see letowt page 6 which couldn't have been de signed by a lehigh engineer accounted for the muffling of the voices all sorts of applause should go to the musical end of the production prof william schempf for his fine orchestration and prof robert cut ler for his excellently trained glee club the production itself was entirely too long and only the liveliness of the second act saved the whole thing the end of the first act drag ged so that a few jokers including a drunk let a couple of coke bottles roll down the metal steps of the stands to liven the party up a little although the producers may think this a sacrilege i feel that
