scoreless success of lehigh team against muhlenberg last saturday encourages coach adverse weather conditions prevent spectacular play ing by either team play written by lehigh students opdycke as pep pennypacker and rhoads as mrs winslow kept the entire audience in uproar ah of cast did well what promises to be a great event in the history of local music circles is to be staged in the con cert by the sensation of the musical world to-day — the paganini of the harp alberto salvi the y m c a of lehigh university is in deed fortunate in engaging alberto salvi the world's greatest concert harpist to appear in the south side high school auditorium on friday evening may 11th mr salvi is a young virtuoso not yet in his thirties but his record of achievements is astounding his phenomenal harp-playing has been the sensation of two continents when a mere child he played for the italian court and since then has amazed the concert audiences of both europe and america never perhaps has an artist been a greater revelation to his audiences than has alberto salvi he has revolutionized harp playing and produces effects and accomplishes a power and brilliancy hitherto con sidered absolutely impossible so astounding have been these revela tions that he has come by trie name : the wizard of the harp on sunday evening april 22nd at 6:30 o'clock there will be a very important meeting of the members of the y m c a in drown hall this meeting will be the most im portant meeting of the year as the officers for the next year will be elected all members of the y m c a are urged to attend and cast their vote for men who will be able to serve well in the various offices another feature of the meeting will be the address by mr e gra ham wilson mr wilson is the executive secretary of the west side branch of the y m c a of new york city and is a great lead er in this international work mr wilson is a remarkable speaker and his address will be of interest to lehigh students all members and students who are interested in this essential work are requested to at tend the meeting this sunday the following are the men who have been nominated for the vari ous offices : — president d p hoagland 24 a c mellinger 24 a m mac kenzie 24 vice-president — m j callow 25 a l bayles 25 secretary e b hay 25 h g rogers 24 treasurer c b mitchell 24 a b sayre 24 carnegie tech rifle team loses to lehigh brown and white nine to play delaware next on wednesday afternoon the brown and white's crack tennis squad completely overcame dickin son winning every match as one of the members of the visiting team remarked the scarlet-clad iracquet-wielders were entirely out classed and served 1 rather as a good team for practice fritz mercur was easily the star of the afternoon taking every game from henderson his oppo nent beale also played his usual good game although he was hardly called upon to display any very fast tennis he defeated demeree by the score of 6 to 2 in the first set and 6to 1 in the second beck was rather off form during the match but nevertheless won both his sets he had rather a struggle to capture the first but came through with a 9 to 7 win he took the second easily by a 6 to 3 score koegler also had a rather easy time with stringer of dickinson the le high player won his first set with a 6 to 2 tally and the second 6 to 4 in the doubles beck and mercur romped off with their dickinson op ponents both men played a clever game and fischer and henderson never had a chance demeree and stringer of the scarlet team put up a hard fight in the second dou bles trying to score at least one win for their team the second set was bitterly contested but to no avail the brown and white men finally coming through with a 7 to 5 victory the summary — singles beck fischer 9-7 6-3 mercur henderson 6 0 and 6-0 koegler-stringer 6-2 6-4 beale demeree 6-2 6-1 doubles — beck and mercur - fischer and henderson 6-1 6-2 beale and koegler - demeree and stringer 6-2 7-5 midshipmen to meet lehigh lacrosse team the brown and white tack-hole specialists again emerged the victors in a very close match with the car negie tech marksmen with a score of 499 to 498 two men on the lehigh team under the terrific strain of the bright possibility of making a perfect team score dropped their last shots for nines no more severe test of phy sical and nervous control and con centrated attention can be found than in the case of the last few shots that mean a perfect team score at such a time the very slightest muscular twitching or eye jerk spells a sure failure to get the bullet in the ten ring the team has fired against twenr ty-two college rifle teams eighteen of these teams receive recognition from their athletic associations and are awarded minor sport letters the men fire regularly in one or two matches each week during the long season from november to may against practically all of the best teams from coast to coast e l robinson 24 100 j m robinson 24 100 f e ferguson 23 100 l a laux 24 100 hales 23 99 499 when the curtain rose on her knight out the 39th annual pro duction of the mustard and cheese dramatic association a spectacle far surpassing all previous efforts of the brown and white club was revealed to the large and sympa thetic audience which packed the kurtz theatre it certainly was a great knight for lehigh the audience which was composed of not only the ma jority of the student body but also hundreds of their friends without a doubt received their full moneys worth to say that this produc tion of the mustard and cheese was a huge success would be putting it rather mildly to say that the show was a knockout would be better applause and laughter rocked the house from the first curtain to the end of the performance when the gallant knights and beautiful ladies removed their wigs to prove to the spectators that everything really was as it should be the dancing throughout the show certainly would have done credit to any professional performances an abundance of clever lines kept the house in a continuous uproar of merriment the music was the kind that one just couldn't help liking and the melodies are worthy to a dorn any musical show the cos tumes were excellent and the stage settings were without a flaw her knight out showed the care and preparation which every one con nected with the show put forth to make this season's college produc tion the best ever a great deal of credit for the success of the show goes to william h lynn profes sional director who put the polish and finishing touches to the produc tion billy did a wonderful work for this all lehigh show and in addition to his efforts in this con nection his pleasing personality has won a place in the hearts of all with whom he came in contact the fact that almost the entire book music and lyrics were written by the undergraduates goes further to show that in lehigh there is ex traordinary dramatic and musical ability among the student body which should be kept alive in prep aration for future productions it would be rather difficult for the large audience which witnessed the splendor of lehigh's 1923 col lege show to attempt to picture the back room of charlie renndg's close to the college campus in which the mustard and cheese was born way back in the year 1884 it was in this atmosphere that the mustard and cheese was founded by dicky davis who afterwards developed into richard harding davis one of the most popular novelists of his day and if davis came back he would no doubt have agreed that this year's club was one of the best in the history of the organization the cast in order of appearance was as follows — mrs winslow — played by b e rhoads jr 23 president stately and austere yet with a tendency towards frivolity which burst forth at times greatly to the amusement of the audience betty barnes the heroine in the person of a c mellinger was quite a beauty although the shoul ders of a football player are just a bit wider than the average member of the fair sex betty was a pleas ing character pep pennypacker carried by johnny opdyke in his usual lively way as prophesied before the show johnny was at his best and kept the audience in constant laughter prof aloysius augustus cun ningham — f b dorton 25 was very well fitted to his part he had all of the enthusiasm of the profes sion in the support of his hobby and was just as earnest in his pur suit of mrs winslow the profes sor also excelled on the ebony bones dick winslow iv — it was pre dicted that this part would be well cared for it was r h dag leish 25 made a perfect hero showed a clever emotional acting and proved in every way to be well versed in the part patricia smith — dainty and little fervently in love with dick in fact a worthy rival for the vivacious betty fritz lewis portrayed this part with great success continued on page four burr competition to-morrow afternoon the lehigh lacrosse team will meet the navy twelve at annapolis following the defeat of the new york lacrosse club on saturday coach o'neill is much encouraged over the showing of the team the brown and white squad has been hard at practice this week and an efficient attack is sure to be in evidence against the mid shipmen it is not expected that coach o neill will make any changes in the lehigh line-up and men who play ed against new york will more than likely start the game always known for powerful la crosse teams the navy stickmen are this year no exception last week the navy defeated st john's col lege with little difficulty in a rather one-sided game it will be remem bered 1 that earlier in the season st john's defeated the brown and white by a score of 2 to 1 in an extra period game the burr announces a competi tion for places on the art and edi torial staff open to present sopho mores and freshmen a man is eligible to election to the board af ter he has contributed to three con secutive issues art men see george hopkins psi upsilon house camp us editorial men see allen hug gins phi delta theta house on the campus there will be an important meet ing of the burr board to-night at 7:15 o'clock to-morrow afternoon the lehigh trackmen will stage their first home competition of the year in the form of a dual meet with the strong and well-balanced team from rutgers the meet is expected to be hotly contested from start to finish as the new brunswick runners will pre sent a strong team rutgers has perhaps the strong est array of runners in the middle atlantic states athletic association at the present time in the past four years they have not lost a dual meet and they have several new indoor records to their credit in cluding one world's record in herbert meyer rutgers has one of the world's leading hurdlers this winter under the excellent coaching of bernie wefers the veteran new york a c track coach and now coach of rutgers meyer set up a new world's record for the 100-yard low hurdles indoors of 11.9 sec onds he also hung up a new mark for the metropolitan senior 70-yardi high hurdles besides the two above records meyer also holds one junior national record two se nior metropolitan a a u marks two middle-atlantic states marks and two rutgers records he might almost be classed as a second earl thompson he will meet some strong competition in the 220-yard low hurdles however when he toes the mark with carol another fast man is captain beattie middle dis tance star who set a new time for the 600-yard race in the junior met ropolitan indoor championships but he will have no easy time of it if he runs the quarter against spring steen and croll or the half mile a gainst leister one of the prettiest races of the afternoon if former races mean anything should be the two-mile with siegmund wearing the brown and white and powell the scarlet jose carol is expected to dupli cate his performances of last week in the 100 and 220-yard dashes although rutgers has no outstand ing star in these events it is expect ed that they will have two fairly fast entries and it might be that meyer will be entered in at least one of these and he is a sprinter of no mean ability this meet marks the first compe tition for the rutgers team and the second meet of the year for the brown and white runners cold * weather has handicapped both teams : and this may prevent any extraor ( dinary fast times in the longer dis 1 tances the tryouts for the team i were held wednesday and the en ] tries will be practicing the same as 1 last saturday with the exception of ] williamson of freshman wrestling . fame in
