soph snowball hailed success three components of last weekend curtain call of detective story robert o'brien the lead can be seen at the extreme left ; two pairs of shoes one of which beongs on the feet of miss nancy lake of new briton pa right who kicked them off to have a go at the charleston the band concert in commemora tion of the 100 th birthday of john philip sousa story good enjoyable lacks dramatic feeling co-stars of the fourposter madame will you walk the marriage and many other fine stage screen radio and tv produc tions jessica tandy and hume cro nyn have been acclaimed from coast to coast in this program of dramatic readings as the original stars of the fourposter for the first time in the history of the american theatre these two people alone played over 700 performances miss tandy has had screen roles in the seventh cross with spencer tracy the green years and the desert fox with james mason her theatre performances include roles as blanche dußois in a streetcar named desire princess kath erine in henry v and ophelia in shakespeare's hamlet cronyn has co-starred with burt lancaster in the film brute force and with bing crosby in top o the morning he has also done out standing character work in the films lifeboat the seventh cross and the green years his stage triumphs have included the lead in three men on a horse hamlet room service and the three sisters the great versatility of these art ists is combined with their unique portrayals in these readings which are sure to please a wide range of tastes a crowd of about 350 couples danced to the music of matt gilles pie and his band at saturday night's sophomore snowball although the final financial report is not complete this year's snowball could be the most successful so far the myth that a dance following a vaca tion is hard to run might well be exploded when the tabula tions are completed finishing up the evening with a medley of christmas carols the band created an air of gaiety among the dancing couples center of attrac tion for the evening was the re volving snowman in the center of the dance hall made of wood chick en wire newspapers and wheat paste and covered with coats of paint and a powder finish the snow man attracted much attention besides the snowman the decora tions included a santa claus flying in a helicopter on the wall in back of the band red white and green streamers overhead gave the dance floor a warm atmosphere 8 stations attend ibs radio parley massed band thrills sousa day crowd by bick corey many times in the past few years this writer has attended concerts some have been what we would class as good some were obviously badly performed sunday at grace hall we heard one of the most thrilling perform ances by a band that we have ever witnessed the occasion was a trib ute to john phillip sousa whose 100 th birthday anniversary falls in 1954 were the march king here himself to hear the lehigh band and guest musicians play his marches he would most certain ly have been impressed if only by the enthusiasm with which the bandsmen went about their work the first part of the program played by the lehigh band alone began with a rendition of the see wavrek page 7 by dean morrow eight college radio stations were represented at the intercollegiate broadcasting system's annual mid dle atlantic regional convention held in drown hall last saturday after touring the studios of wlrn the representatives convened in drown hall to hold their business meeting prof j by art roth new faces of 1954 might well be the title to apply to the mustard and cheese players weekend production of detective story as a cast com prised mainly of newcomers put on a very good enjoyable if not moving performance saturday evening before an audience of .... people at broughal junior high school working with a play of proved merit the performers were not able to produce the degree of feeling necessary for really convincing drama this incapability made it hard for the audience to sympathize with the plight of the leading characters the best illustration of this lack of verisimilitude occurred in the scene where detective mcleod is shot to death although written as a dramatic punctuation to a deep-seated emotional struggle the shooting evoked a ripple of laughter from the audience however during most of the play when the action was moving along at a good clip the dialogue was crisp realistic and well-timed — it was only the pacing of the longer speeches that difficulties were experienced robert o'brien and helen search cast as detective and mrs mcleod were extremely competent and portrayed their respective characters with a great deal of verve and convicition the main sup porting characters were the ones who seemed to be at fault the comic reliefs on the other hand were excellently played with special credits to merle letowt for her perfect characterization of the scatterbrained shoplifter bob silverton and glenn maggio came out as two of the funniest burglars in the annals of crime 120 of 516 seniors subscribe to class insurance gift plan b mcfadden wlrn faculty adviser and george ryerson wlrn station manager wel comed the group to lehigh chairman of the meeting was henry taylor 56 regional director walter o briggs 56 was elected regional advertising director and ken pitman bucknell was named program director david woods instructor of radio and tv at lehigh gave a talk on the production of the radio drama he pointed out that the four im portant parts necessary for a good radio production are facilities mi crophones records sound effects personnel whether experienced in radio or not a script and a director who has patience ingenuity a little luck and who can take any role in an emergency the publicity director for ibs walter hofer explained how ibs can help members obtain professional jobs after gradua tion from college he said that with cooperation of member stations ibs can grow to a larger network to even surpass the see woods page 7 the new half-million dollar student health center continues to rise steadily ground for the center was broken by president whita ker last may 7 completion is scheduled for march a total of 120 of the 516 seniors have subscribed to the senior class gift plan according to dick glass berg chairman although the actual deadline for signing up for the gift is december 1955 it is desirable that seniors do so early one of the features of the class gift plan is that it is insured that is if a subscriber should die before completion of the 20-year program insurance will pay the remaining payments actually only 238 is paid into the fund to go directly to the uni versity 42 is the fee for the insur anc which is included in every sub scription the difference is the in terest on the payments designation of the uses to which the money will be put takes place at the 20th anniversary of the class any senior who hasn't been con tacted yet should
