55 drinker house president was elected president of the interdormitory council for next year and bob long 55 price hall president was elected secretary i the election took place at a i special meeting of idc called wednesday night for this pur pose and to take care of several other matters this meeting of idc was the first j held under the new constitution the ! only voting members are the six house presidents and four commit ' tee chairmen who now compose idc because of schiesser's election as president a new drinker house president must be chosen ; in addition to the president and secretary the new members of the council are spencer shantz 55 so cial chairman jack francisco 56 athletic chairman george ryerson 55 disciplinary chairman ike ro senburg 55 treasurer bob hen shaw 55 tony principe 55 bill hillegass 56 and carl monroe 56 social chairman the first order of business was a report on the revised proced ure for the allocation of housing accommodations in the residence halls system for the fall 1955 se mester and thereafter the revi sions were accepted and approv ed by the council this report appears elsewhere in this issue also pertaining to housing philip b woodroofe director of residence halls said that instead of having two leases for the school year there will be only one lease issued at the be ginning of the year the vending machine committee see idc elects page 4 see flower ban page 5 home design featured at architectural exhibit lehigh opposes the flower ban by a majority of 155 lehigh men showed their preference for flowers at the houseparty dance in a poll taken last week by the junior class cabinet to sample opinion on the matter charles a eisenfelder jr 55 head of the houseparty publicity com mittee reported wednesday night that 658 men turned in ballots in the poll which included all segments of the student body of these 451 indi cated that they plan to attend the dance by a 21-2-1 vote of the junior class cabinet last night the flower ban on next weekend's spring houseparty dance has been removed flowers will now be optional but not re quired according to charles eisenfelder dance publicity chairman the fact that the flower ban in fluenced their decision to attend the dance was revealed by 62 men forty-eight stated that they would not attend next week's ball if the flower ban were lifted eisenfelder refused to specu late on the outcome of last night's cabinet meeting which was held to decide the fate of tucker thrush was miss pa featured vocalist with tommy tucker at the houseparty dance will be clare nelson miss nelson who was named miss pennsylvania of 1951 will appear with tucker and his band on the lower floor of grace hall miss nelson accepted a dare from a co-worker to enter miss pennsylvania contest in 1951 while an employee at pitts burgh plate glass company she walked away with all hon ors she introduced the 1952 ford and packard cars and did a command performance for ex vice-president alvin barkley clare entered the university of pittsburgh in the spring of 1952 but still made many personal appear ances on weekends one of these weekends she appeared on a floor at canonsburg where tommy liked her so well that he signed her up clare studied piano for nine years and took singing lessons for eight she has been an excellent tap danc er since the age of four dancing in the dark highlighted by a decorative venetian scene will be the theme of the 1954 spring houseparty dance on may 7 in grace hall featuring the orchestras of tommy tucker and buddy wil liams including gondolas water and soft lighting the venetian scene will appear on the south wall of the low er floor of grace hall where tuck er's orchestra will play williams will entertain on the upper floor tickets for the dance which will be held from 10 p.m until 2 a.m are now on sale and can be obtained from respective liv ing group presidents tucker who has entertained audi ences in hotels clubs ballrooms and dances throughout the country is also a radio and recording star two of his most famous recordings are i don't want to set the world on fire and the man who comes around which have sold more than 600,000 copies the orchestra has received top billing at the hotel astor in new york city and the roosevelt hotel in washington d.c as well as many other famous show places tucker has been featured on radio appearing on the fitch bandwagon and coca cola's spotlight bands he also appear ed on the pot o gold show for a long time tucker has ap peared before large theater au diences throughout the nation well educated in many fields tucker was elected to phi beta kap pa while in college played varsity baseball and won a listing in who's who of american young men six months after he was awarded his ba degree he had begun to organize his own band tonight is deadline for dates rooms tonight is the deadline for sign ing up dorm rooms for houseparty dates according to idc president bob ameling all dates will be housed in drinker house this year and those men interested in obtain ing room should contact section presidents of drinker ameling stated that idc will sponsor the saturday morning breakfast after the dance in lam berton hall housing procedure in dorms modified by idc directive arcadia invites students to new debate period encouragement of student partici pation is the purpose of the new stu dent debate period during arcadia meetings instituted through a mo tion presented by dave sidikman the audience debate period lasts 10 minutes and takes place before the for the good of arcadia portion of the meetings sidikman said that he feels that the new session has proved very effective in promoting school inter est in arcadia's work as well as giv ing students a better idea of how arcadia operates the arcadia members encourage all members of the student body to attend the elements one of the most controversial ex hibits at the architecture show is this model of an icosahedron house by paul beidler scattered showers are expected tonight by the weatherman followed by thunder show ers tomorrow and again by the mid dle of next week i temperatures for ! the next five days will average six to eight degrees above the present normal of 55 cooler tomorrow warmer tuesday and wednesday total expected precipitation 5 inch an icosahedron house designed by architect paul beidler is currently on exhibit in the library described by its creator as an exploratory use of space the house is considered an exercise in spherical design although generally considered as a thing of the future the house could easily be built with available materials none of the walls of the house are vertical and 12 icosahedrons are used in all the home has three floors situated around a central stair case each of the 12 space units could be used to include eight bedrooms a study and an observatory with kitchen and air-conditioning equip ment in the center prof francis j quirk head of the fine arts department says that it is 50 years ahead of our time one of his colleagues describes it as a pent house in a straight jacket many members of the faculty assisted in the planning of the unusual resi dence procedure for the allocation of housing accommodations in the resi dence halls for the fall semester and thereafter were announced at the idc meeting wednesday night one of the rules is that two procedure lists must be established and main tained by each section excluding graduate students fraternity mem bers and pledges and non-members a permanent precedent list must be maintained of all sec tion members who have been admitted through the floating precedence list each spring before next year's leases are given out the precedence list should be re-established on the basis of achieved points and the re vised list will be used to settle allo cation problems among the perma nnt residents however this re-evaluation need not be made if a section has no allo cation problems if permanent men must move to make room for incom ing freshmen the low men success ively on the permanent precedence list must vacate they will then be placed at the head of the floating preference list in the reverse order in which they were forced to vacate the floating precedence list will be composed of coming sophomores transfer students see housing page 4 volume 65 — number 43 committee wednesday and elections will be held may 14 15 and 17 jack crandall chairman of the arcadia committee said we of the elections committee are very pleased by the large number of peti tions turned in by the candidates and appreciate the increased in terest a referendum will be held at the election to change the constitution for this reason seniors will be permitted to participate in the election the vote of the students will decide whether non-arcadians will be eligi ble to serve as chairmen of arcadia's numerous committees if the amendment is passed non-arcadians will be permitted
