health bldg erection set for may construction of the new 400,000 health center will begin next month so that the building will be under roof by winter the building expected to be ready for occupancy in june 1955 will be constructed diagonally across the street from taylor hall a total of 234,729 has been raised by the alumni and par ents funds to meet the anony mous challenge gift of an amount up to 250,000 which can be matched by the university of the total given the alumni have contributed 214,506 and parents 20,383 money will continue to be requested so that no part of the challenge gift will be wasted the contract was awarded to earl w ecker of bethlehem after a board of trustees meeting last week the new health center which will be constructed of native stone to i harmonize with other university buildings will replace ttfe small wooden frame structure acquired as war surplus and moved here from fort washington md in 1946 l as a modern attractive function ally-planned building the new structure has been designed to pro mote the effectiveness of the health and medical program the main floor will contain the dispensary six observation rooms and x-ray audio ' sterilizing and sinus treatment | rooms the ground floor will have an entrance from a lower level and will include two waiting rooms physio-therapy section ultra violet ray room and administra tive offices the basement will provide space for storage and a garage the health center is one of the objectives of the 7,000,000 develop ment program which started with the progress fund in 1947 a fraternity chef was slightly in | jured and a steak dinner for 100 j parents day guests was ru:rod by a j grease fire in the kitchen of sigma ' phi epsilon fraternity house at 5:45 saturday afternoon j william fiffete was treated at st luke's hospital and released after inhaling poisonous gas fumes while fighting the fire with an extinguisher city fire men arrived in time to put out the last of the flames and turn off the escaping gas from the range the fire started in the oven of the stove igniting grease carbon tetra chloride from the extinguisher was sprayed over the whole area con taminating the food members and guests were fed in local eateries by far the saturday evening standing room only audience of 2,300 was presented the best of the two stagings technically artistically collectively the performance went off smoother and mistakes made the opening night were not repeated although there were a few new onea — very few the 12-number first part contained everything but a musical kitchen sink marches spirituals hymns ballads hillbilly music a puppet show folk dances — american and russian — jazz a brass choir and a flying conductor who managed to race the 93 feet from the band po dium to the chorus rostrum between numbers to direct both groups throughout the show formed the terrific diversification of talent however each unit was well done in itself the hour-long presentation was a little too long in spots it dragged but the audience seemed to enjoy it and waited patiently to see from which corner of the gigantic 4,800 square-foot arena-style stage the next act might spring forth after the stirring opening march commando by the band the glee club did a lively negro spiritual animals a'comin another change of pace had the chorus providing good background music for well executed solos by earl scott and arvin tatum singing waters ripple and flow hugh weir 56 presented his usual adept puppet performance although his stringed pals were three feet tall they were hard to see from the gallery and objects on stage blocked the view of many one of the most beautiful se lections of the evening although quite time consuming was the acappella solo of poor wayfar in stranger by norman stotz who is working on his third un dergraduate degree here the collegians got into the act with their popular arrangement of i've got my love to keep me warm noisy but well received the appearance and effect of a see editorial page 2 for my part i can't forget it it was magnificent grand those were billy sheridan's words after wit nessing the friday evening perform ance of the spring music festival in grace hall sheridan who was honored for his 40 years as wrestling coach in part two of the show the billy sheridan story stated when lehigh does something it does it grand that's why i love lehigh in his first public appearances since his recent illness sheridan was visibly moved by both nights shows after saturday's finale sheridan shook hands with dan hake who portrayed him and hug ged rose marie navarro who play ed jeanie the girl he left behind in scotland the elements scattered thundershowers tonight tomorrow friday and saturday is the weatherman's prediction for the next five days temperatures will average around the present nor mal of 54 degrees turning colder tomorrow warmer by friday cooler by sunday total precipitation 5 inch billy sheridan making his first appearance at lehigh since his ill ness congratulates dan hake who portrayed the wrestling mentor in the music festival among the unusual happenings around campus over the weekend were a car wedged between two trees a motorcycle on the third floor of taylor hall a beer keg atop the flagpole and a campus mongrel who refused to leave the music festival friday night a midget crosley station wagon owned by george koelsch 56 was jammed be tween two trees on taylor quad by some pranksters the tiny auto had to be lifted by stu dents from between the trees the same night a harley-david son motorcycle owned by phil klau der 57 was found on the third floor of taylor hall saturday night was rather event ful around campus also chon ju bet's huge boxer mongrel arrived just in time for the 8 o'clock curtain at the music festival he was pleas ed with his front row seat and it took 15 minutes for ushers don schindel 54 business manager of the festival and members of the au dience to evict the balking canine finally george cron 54 picked the dog up bodily using a bear-hug and carried the struggling beast from grace hall the same night a beer keg was tied to the ropes on the flagpole and hoisted to the top it was removed early sunday morning a midget crosley station wagon owned by george koelsh 56 was jammed betwen two trees on the taylor hall quadrangle koelsh had to ask for lifting presented this weekend in packard auditorium as the third production of the year of mustard and cheese the man in the white suit with alec guiness and joan green wood and dr syn featuring george arliss and margaret lockwood will be presented friday evening at 7:30 massive festival good production by bill haase an avalanche of musical variety numbers a flashing pianistic interlude and the legend-like lovable billy sheridan story carried a two-night audience of 3,700 persons through almost six hours of attractive entertain ment this past weekend as the 1954 spring music fesival was staged in grace hall the show massive in size color and challenge seemed a fitting tribute to wee willy sheridan who despite his diminutive body rose to the top of the wrestling world during his years as a champion wrestler in england and later as coach of lehigh's matmen for 40 years saturday evening at 7:30 the club will show oliver twist with alec guiness and robert newton and ' the astonishing heart with noel coward and joyce carey i since the seating capacity of packard auditorium for film-view ing is limited to 500 persons all of the lehigh family stu dents faculty and administrative staff are requested to obtain passes f in advance these passes can be picked up at the supply bureau mrs mor avec's office in drown hall and room 317 in christmas-saucon hall f in order that as many of the le high family as possible can be ac commodated at these showings stu dents are limited to one pass each and faculty and administrative staff k to two passes each performance a few passes for each perform ance will be available at the door the club however is extremely anxious that all desiring to see these . films obtain the necessary passes prior to the performances in order to help defray the expenses of this program a voluntary collection will be taken at each performance sheridan dubs festival grand richard elrich portraying an egyptian athlete at the glasgow games in the
