if weekend starting with the an nual pledge banquet and concluding with parties at the fraternities dur ing and after the monte carlo dance was a great success one of the highlights of the weekend was mustard and cheese fine presenta tion of the popular broadway play mister roberts starring ken verostick the pledge banquet held at the masonic temple friday at 6:30 p.m was attended by 390 students kenneth smiley uni versity vice president spoke on the role of the fraternity in education and was followed by lloyd cochran national inter fraternity conference chairman and past president of alpha sig ma phi cochran spoke on your frater nity — an opportunity and a chal lenge other guests at the event in clude deans wray h congdon john d leith and byron c hayes charles a seidle director of ad missions and elmer glick treasurer were also among the guests chap lain raymond fuessle said grace be fore the roast beef dinner was serv ed ifc officers were also present in sro audience dubs roberts ' fabulous ' play lu bethlehem pa volume 65—number 36 tuesday march 23 1954 russkis but white more on page 3 by art roth fabulous the current all-inclusive campus superlative was the word on the lips of many of the unprecedented 1500 person sro audience that witnessed mustard and cheese's production of mister roberts saturday night at broughal junior high school contrasted with the rivals of last year's greek weekend rob erts was definitely more successful audience-wise for even the rainy friday night show attracted a crowd of 900 persons why the change in campus attitude both are excellent well-written plays which were skillfully acted and produced under approximately the same circumstances the difference however lay in the character of the plays themselves — a modern wartime comedy drama as opposed to an 18th century english comedy of manners the rivals aimed its whimsicalities at the head while mister rob erts on the other hand threw wit to the winds and concentrated on broad earthy humor to produce belly-laughs and the audience mellowed by the maennerchor's beer plus the usual cocktail party potables and equipped wi|h at least a basic knowledge of sex found roberts humor vastly more amusing the performance as a whole was entertaining and well paced ken verostick shouldering the bulk of the load as mr roberts admirably portrayed the diffcult role of the war-hungry lieutenant with a con siderable conviction ken however did lack that certain dramatic quality which should have made mr roberts the strong constant cen ter about which the play revolves ken's forte continues to be comedy the focal point of action when onstage ed rand as mr pulver played the hapless lazy disorganized and lecherous ensign with a great deal of verve taking well the role of the queeg-like captain dick corney did magni ficently the fervid speech in the dramatic scene between himself and roberts a minor point which detracted from the performance was in congruity of dialect which at times was somewhat annoying in the supporting role of the ship's doctor m&c prexy dick grant carried off the part with his usual good though unspectacular per formance worth mentioning because she was the only woman in the cast is fran ces austin who played nurse ann girard though individual parts were small the actors who made up the crew collectively added a realism and depth to the play the hilarious spy glass and liberty scenes could have become rather ribald were it not the im pression that this was simply the natural reaction of 167 bored lonely sailors who had not had a liberty for over a year especially noteworthy was art anderman's animated performance as dowdy and ted gorman's perfect portrayal of stefanowski — the epitome of a u.s navy crewman plaudits also to thoburn v barker who designed the set and to johri thompson who painted it the twin-forty battery and the genuine cargo net which was draped where the footlights should have been provided an imaginative touch of realism lest we forget mister roberts was directed by prof h barrett davis without whose skillful hand the play no matter how well written would simply not have come off i f great success 1100 tickets sold don cossacks return friday * nicholas kostrukoff and the 26 don cossacks will return to lehigh friday night for a concert of sacred and secular music sponsored by the scl committee the cossacks last appearance on south mountain in 1948 was roundly cheered by a ca pacity crowd in grace hall ¥ * * if weekend . . . by bob balestier returning by popular demand as a part of the student concerts-lec tures series the world-famous don cossack chorus and dancers are scheduled for an engagement friday - evening at 8 p.m in grace hall stu dents will be admitted free upon presentation of their id cards 1 composed of 26 singers under the direction of nicholas kos trukoff the troupe conies back ¦ to the campus during their 15th trans-continental tour six years ago they were acclaimed by a ? capacity audience in grace hall flaunting a dynamic repertoire 24 ogres led by a dancing elf delight ed a capacity crowd friday night in grace hall this was the lead on the brown and white story of dec 21 4 1948 describing the wild antics of the cossacks during their initial performance here * typifying the success of the pro gram was the description that two costumed dervishes sailed onto the stage evoking roars of approval with their agility and whirling bal ance these colorful words plug amazing startling and pranc ing gleefully combined to give a rapturous description of the cos isacks performance one of the request numbers which the chorus will present in i its varied program of sacred and secular music will be hospodi pomilui which was so popular , with the lehigh audience in 1948 that it was repeated as an encore the same evening t in addition to ensemble offerings the program will include several vo cal solos by featured members of the ( troupe dagger dance sequences will be presented during the second half of f the program by soloist gabriel solo duhin one of the starred performs ers ?
