kline is high man for opponents on sunday march 4th at 2:30 p m the regular weekly bible classes of the y m c a will be held in drown hall there are two classes ; one under the instruction of professor miller of the geology department and the other under the joint leadership of professors luch and reiter both classes are mainly for the purpose of discus sion but professor miller's class follows a text book while in the other class various questions are brought forward foir discussion these classes are called bible class es for a lack of a better name ; and although frequent reference is made to the bible they are not classes for the sole purpose of bible study but rather for discussion of various re ligious questions the final arrangements for the mustard and cheese show have been made and the show is to be given in the kurtz theatre on mon day evening april 16th the cast has been having four rehearsals a week and the chorus has also been hard at work on their new steps the cast is composed of the follow ing men : — r dauglish 26 a c mellinger 24 b e rhoades 23 f b dor ton 25 f louis 26 and j h op dyeke 23 continued on page four these men have been spending a great deal of time on their parts and expect to know them by the time the coach is engaged the coach is to be mr howell from easton who has coached several college plays swimmers finish unlucky season syracuse five next opponents resume shows brown and white natators were victims of jinx in many meets first meeting between teams of these universities since u s lacrosse championship tilt harmon high scorer team in fine shape this evening at 7:30 o'clock the mining and geological societies will hold a joint meet in the physics lecture room with j e m wilson 22 as speaker mr wilson will speak on mining machinery in gen eral and his address will be illus trated by motion pictures the reels have been loaned to the societies by the jeffry manufacturing company of columbus ohio the meeting will no doubt be of interest to any student of engineering as it is not often that motion pictures showing the actual operation of the various machines can be secured the use of machinery in mining operations is becoming of increas ing importance in coal 1 mining and as a matter of fact in all mining conducted on a large scale a large amount of useless material must be removed with the valuable products for this reason expeditious means of removing vast quantities of heavy material must be used and machinery has been developed to iill this need in addition there will be two stu dent speakers who will speak on lopics of intelrest that have been learned by experience or on which they have some special information senior class book nearly completed on wednesday night the brown and white quintet ran roughshod over the albright courtmen the same team that beat muhlenberg 29 to 17 the final count was 33 to 20 during most of the game lehigb had the red and white's score doubled or tripled but the myeirstown lad's came up strong in the last few minutes of the second half the half-time score was 27 to 10 in favor of the brown and white perhaps lehigh's greatest scoring factor was lingle's wonder ful foul shooting the local forward shooting 15 straight single-pointers albright's play was somewhat hindered by being used to a smaller court but their passing was fast and accurate they lacked a good shot at the basket however until kline came through towards the end of the game putting in three double-deckers in the last five min utes miller was an able point scorer finding the basket for sev eral difficult shots he was clever at intercepting lehigh's passes also and prevented a good bit of scoring raffensberger and zellers did not line up to their previous reputation the former caging only 6 out of 13 foul goals continued on page four it would be haird to pick one out of the lehigh five as standing out above the rest the team played as a whole on wednesday night the teamwork being wellnigh perfect hartung as usual starred at break ing up the opponents plays near the basket weinstein was unusual ly good at rushing the ball towards the basket while lees and snyder excelled at putting the ball through lees was playing phenomenal bas ketball until he was forced to retire due to personal fouls all this com pre-medicals combine with arts club meet next saturday the lehigh wrest lers will invade the perm state stronghold with a mighty attempt to come out on the long end of what will undoubtedly be a close score the success of the teams this season has been very nearly equal with perm state possibly a slight favorite a fair estimate of state's strength may be obtained by a comparison of scores navy defeated state 16 to 11 while lehigh was downed by a2o to 10 count the brown and white grapplers obtained two falls in this meet while state scored one fall and two decisions when the nittany lions met perm the pbila delphians were swamped under a 26 to 0 tally while lehigh defeated them in the first meet of the season by a score of 23 to 8 virginia fell before state to the tune of 33 to 0 and lehigh can also boast of a sim ilar count against dartmouth com parative scores cannot be relied up on for their accuracy but a consid eration of them will at least indicate that the match will be a close one and will be hard-fought throughout tryouts in the 145-pound and un limited classes were held last wed nesday afternoon with the iresult that rogers defeated thompson and carlisle bettered levitz no other trials were held as the men who are to enter in the other weights are decided upon with the excep tion of the 115-pound class in the event that schwarzbach is physical ly able he will probably wrestle otherwise reynolds will enter the team will winning the 160-pound title in the senior wrestling championship of the national a a u held in new york on monday and tues day night coxe who was accom panied by coach billy sheridan drew a bye in the preliminaries and spent monday night watching the other contestants and getting some idea of the type of wrestling he would stack up against his first match the following evening was against wil helm en son an entry from the east side y m c a this bout was so closely contested during the regulation ten minutes that the referee was unable to give a decision and called on three for mer wrestlers who were in the au dience for an opinion and based on their opinion coxe was award ed the decision the next bout was all-lehigh as e m loeser 21 who wrestled for the brown and white in 1921 opposed coxe the former put up a great battle for the first five minutes but coxe's superior physical condition was too much for him and loeser was thrown with a reverse chancery and bar-nelson the other entrants in the semi-finals were leino of the new york a c who is the pres ent olympic and a folrmer national champion and johnson of colum bia the present 158-pound intercol legiate champion leino threw the collegian with a head scissors after nine minutes had elapsed coxe and leino went to the mat in the finals about 1 o'clock in the morning making eddie's third bout of the evening in the first seven minutes of the scheduled fifteen minute engagement neither entry had an advantage both remaining on their feet at this point coxe became more aggressive and man aged to take leino to the mat and obtain an advantage this he had held for about five minutes when the action took the men to the edge of the mat it appeared to the spec tators as though coxe expected the referee to oirder the men to the cen ter as he released his hold his op ponent quick to take advantage of any slip secured a chancery and threw the lehigh entry in a few seconds subscriptions open for 1924 epitome to-morrow evening the lehigh quintet will meet the syracuse five at syracuse the first encounter be tween these two universities in any field of sport since their respective lacrosse teams met to decide the championship of the united states according to all freports the sy racuse team is a very strong one having battled the princeton team for a full forty minutes with never a letup the tigers finally emerging on the long end of a 28 to 25 score a team that can meet and play against such a team as now repre sents princeton on their own home floor to such an end is to be both respected and feared the syracuse five has played oth er teams from pennsvlvaonia among them being pitt over whom a vic tory was registered since hess was out of the al bright game on account of sickness it is difficult to say whether he will appear in the line-up against syra cuse if such be the case his loss will be keenly felt however hen schen has once more appeared in uniform and if allowed to return to the floor can be relied upon to perform yeoman service in every branch of the game battery candidates report to baldwin the lehigh freshman basketball team suffered a defeat at the hands of the lafayette freshmen last wednesday evening by the score 23 to 14 the game was called at 7 o'clock in the taylor gymnasium just preceding the varsity game both teams were fast and only in the field-goal shooting hold battery positions that have not reported to the coach they are urged to do so at once indoor work with these men will continue for the next two weeks after which a call will be made for all candidates to report for outdoor practice all baseball men are requested to watch the brown and white and the bulletin-boards for further an nouncements on friday evening at 8 o'clock in drown hall the arts and science club and the pre-medical society will hold a combined meeting the two clubs were originally scheduled to meet separately but due to the fact that the membership of both is dlrawn from the same source and that the clubs are so closely analo gous the executives of the clubs de cided that a joint meeting would eliminate the conflict and be both beneficial and interesting the pre-medical society had se cured as their speaker dr rauch the city physician who will be the principal speaker of the joint meet ing dr rauch will speak on san itation in the army and his ad dress will not be technical but couched in ordinary phraseology so that his remarks will be of interest to all who care to attend continued on page four in regard to the arts and science club a student paper will be pre sented on alexander hamilton by r a heckert 24 the arts and science club further has some im there are 182 men who have sta ted their intentions of wanting to be in the senior section of the 1924 epitome of these 182 men there are still six ballots that have not been turned in two who have not sent in their photographs and twen ty-one who as yet have not paid their 13.00 assessment the committee has decided that it is not fair to the 1924 epitome board to hold 1 up its section any longer because of a few men who have neglected the above matters so they will give these men until march 3rd to straighten up the af fairs if they do not have the necessary material in the hands of the committee before march 3 they will not be admitted to the senior section the senior section will be com pleted in plenty of time for the 1924 epitome board up to date 158 photographs have been sent to the engiraver and the cuts will be sent to the printers on march 3 the two members of the committee of opinions have secured their ma terial and all this w r ill be ready for the printers by the latter part of next week there will be one section known as the snap-shot section which will be very good in order to make this extremely good it is necessary for each member of the class to turn in one or more snap shots of himself or classmates up ifco the present time there have been quite a few of these photographs turned in but the committee is de jsirous of obtaining more in order to make the section complete any one who has any suitable snap-shots in his possession is squad staged a big surprise by hand ing the brown and white team a 42 to 28 defeat this defeat was the sixth straight suffered by cap tain underwood's men in as maniy stairts in dual meets there remains but one more event on the schedule ; the intercollegiate meet at swarth more but judging from the fact that lehigh lost to all of the mem bers of the league it is not proba ble that very much good work will be done by the squad last year the lehigh squad hand ed a defeat to each of the other members of the league thereby an nexing the title of champions of the eastern collegiate swimming as sociation the team opened its season on december 9th when the powerful princeton team handed the univer sity a 60 to 11 setback in close succession followed defeats by rut gers army swarthmore universi ty of pittsburgh and finally johns hopkins the main trouble seemed to be a lack of sprint men this is shown by the fact that the relay team won but one race harmon and childs were the individual stars of the team harmon winning six first places and childs three the individual record of the team is as follows — the competitors for position of business manager of the 1925 epit ome are taking subscriptions for the 1924 epitome which is expect ed to be completed early in may due to the failure of the epit ome to pay for itself in the last few years and to the fact that many copies w r ere left unsold the business staff has deemed it neces sary to order only enough copies this year to fill the demands of the subscribers everyone who wants an epitome must order it through
